World Straight Pool Updates from New Jersey

Kind of shitty the updates! So if i noticed right. Jasmin lost both of her matches today?

Roy! remember Veldhoven a few years ago. Ortmann- Niels. Race to 125. Ortmann leading 124-0 and only the breakball left. Niels calls a time out. Goes to the toilet comes back ( then it still was the rule that the playing player has to wait during the time out). Ollie misses and Niels runs the 125. Tell me is that Gentleman like, letting the rules work for him or just eagerness?? Any guy just wants the win. So bent the rules a little. That's the way the world goes round ;-)

Wow. Earl Herring is in the field! I remember him well, as he played in the first three PPPA World Straight Pool Championships from 1976-78, all of which I attended. He was quite a player, finishing 4th in 1976 and 6th in 1977.

Also, congrats to my friend Marc Vidal.

He "retired" for a while after losing a 14.1 match to Jean Balukas. Prior to the match he said he would quit if a woman beats him, and she did, and he did.

Jay I read most of your posts and consider you one of the most knowlegable people on the forum. I am a personal friend of Earl Herring while the statement may be true it may have been made in gest it may have never been said . The reason he stopped had absolutely nothing to do w/his loss to Jean.!!! He is a gentleman and gives her respect anytime someone mentions her or her game.He was robbed by his backers, lost his 1st wife to the road , was not allowed to compete because of his race . He is now a very respected man in our community, a retired ironworker, who loves the game. I am sure if you met him,and asked of him of this old wives tale he would chuckle a bit compliment her game remind u she beat Ray M. that year as well and move on to better conversations about the game he loves. He made the right choice Dave becoming an ironworker and a Minister too,he is a great guy and your lucky to have him there in your room.I was talking to Gil Black about the road and how they went to DC and beat everyone from the bottom to the top there many years ago and how perfect it went.I posted in The Action Room looking for a bet on tomorrows match with Raj Hundal and Earl Herring,so if anyone is interested and like Raj PM me!

WHen I heard the name, "Earl Herring," I was immediately reminded of a Joss tournament I went to in Providence, RI. It was the first time I had ever met Earl Herring, as well as Dave and his lovely lady in the picture below.

I really enjoyed speaking with Earl Herring that weekend. We are at Snooker's pool room in Providence, RI, and this was during a time when I loved going to tournaments every single weekend. I was snapping pictures left and right! :grin-square:

Here's a little Earl Herring trivia. Not only is he a man of the cloth today, but Earl Herring was born in the same town as another famous Earl (Strickland). Must be something in the water down there in North Carolina that produces these great players. ;)

Here's Dave, Ruth, and Earl Herring on the right. Picture taken in 2004, I think. :p

Thanks Jennie, made me feel like I was back in NY for a moment, cant wait to get back to Gallery.I have to say that Dave Pinkston is another great guy,the first time you and I met Jennie he introduced us at the Joss Tour in Albany which he snapped off undefeated winning over Mike Zuglan and Danny Hewitt,he did this with not much practice or play as he runs his room open to close.Gallery Billiards in the best pool hall in Orange County New York hands down. :)

Hey Jam

Thats a great pic my Ruthie is sure to be embarassed, she sure is beautiful ,brought a big smile to my face. Earl was so happy to get the invite. He must be having a great time . Those that knew him in his prime say great things about his game his heart and his presence on and off the green. Every time I compete its a reflection of his influence. I am happy for him to recieve a little recognition, its a shame it took so long.I have seen some of the crap u and yours have had to deal with . Your smile and Keiths spirit for the game are enough for me .I am a fan of you both . Hope to see you again sometime.

You and Earl have both inspired many of us young players at Gallery,we have learned alot from you both, not just about the game but also how to carry ourselves and respect for our opponents and sportsmanship. These are great qualities I wish more players would have, they need to spend time in your room and they will learn how to shake hands when they lose and respect the game.

Sorry boys and girls....I'm out.

Moving this week so my time out there will be much more limited than I hoped for. My knowledge of straight pool is quite limited but from what I saw last night:

Robles - WAY out of stroke. Not playing his normal game at all. Hopefully the bad day is over and today is a new day. Lost to Kempter & Bustie 43 & 39. Beat Smith 100 to 60 something.

Lipsky - IS PLAYING AWESOME!!! Had a brutal schedule playing the 1st matches of the day and the last. Won both his first two and when I left at midnight, he had yet to play his last match. OUCH! But he's playing sooooo good! And Gina is soooo nervous watching him LOL.

Stepanov - I'm most impressed by him. I haven't really paid attention to him before be he plays GOOD!!! Very deliberate player. Fun to watch!

Hohmann - It's like he's just on the edge of coming back! I saw him appear to be getting back in stroke and then snooker himself a couple of times. He's coming back.

Immonen - playing great!

Daya - What a come back last night to defeat that young German kid Jetsch (sp). Pretty strong.

Kempter - Played great when I saw him play Tony. TR only had I think 3 innings, maybe 4.

Smith - Kept running out the beginning and middle of the rack great, but would get stuck on the last two or three balls.

Neils - WOW!

Earl Herring - MY FAVORITE to WATCH!!!! SOOOOO deserves to be here!
He's incredible and he is definitely impressing the other pros he's playing. We were sitting next to Corey when he played Earl and Corey said, "man, they weren't kidding when they said this guy shoots good!" I think Earl scared Corey into dead stroke! LOL

Lynch - I didn't get to see too much of his match but he seemed to be playing really well. Gave Harriman a good run for him money.

Yednak - Has a VERY good chance of making it to the top 16 if he simply stays focused and trusts himself!!

Ortmann - He's playing good don't get me wrong, but I saw him miss a couple of times and I was quite surprised!!

Sigel - still talking ....

Marc Vidal - playing FANTASTIC!! His win against Schmidt was big! Big help for him advancing to the top 16.

Yu Ram - She made a great run against some guy last night! But she often didn't have a good break shot or any break shot at all set up. She's a million times better from last year though.

Barouty - is Barouty ... fun to watch, so talented, but shrugs when he misses shots he shouldn't miss and you're like, "Danny, how could you miss that!!!" :)

Deuel - Very simple, very clean, very accurate! He's playing good!

Davis - Struggling ... but he's a kick to talk to!

Babica - never heard of him but WOW, he was playing good against Archer. Don't know their final score but he was at the table alot from what I saw!

That's all I got. Take it with a grain of salt as, like I said, my knowledge of 14.1 is limited to a few conversations with Tony and SJM and simply watching. Hope it helps!!

You are right, Stepanov played great the one match I saw (against Davis). The kid looks like he could go far.

How's Bobby Hunter hittin' em

Anyone watched and of BH matches? Former world champ and I don't hear anything about him. Definitely not to be overlooked.

td

I watched Bobby Hunter yesterday basically sit down his entire match. It is a shame he never really had a chance to get in gear as Mika was on fire.

Both went off at 11am

Sigel and Hohmann should be a good match................I predict a big run from one of these players in the match :)
