World Ten Ball - Will the show go on? Will it be cancelled?

Just as strange, is that they took me OFF their e-mail list. Little mice at work I guess. I'll be covering this event for Billiards Digest and doing a blog on AZ, so they might want to keep me in the loop. I feel like I'll be more of an investigative reporter for this one than just a journalist. A lot of mystery and strange goings on surrounding this event.

What is interesting about this official letter is the mention that the '08 WPC has been cancelled. More interesting is the mention of the Raya ex-supplier, now turned competition, Matchroom Sports.

An official letter having the wrong information about a competitor lacks in ethics among honorable business people (Raya and Matchroom considered). Who cancelled the World Nine-Ball Championship and when was it considered "cancelled"? The circumstances of how it was "cancelled" is another story. From the on-going negotiations between BMPAP and Matchroom Sports, the '08 WPC is not yet cancelled, unless Raya knows something that the negotiating parties do not know.

Speculating in a forum that an event might not push through is very different from having an official letter stating that an event of a competitor (Matchroom Sports), as a matter of factly said, is cancelled.

I just got an email from Raya Sports about World Ten Ball. I have never sent any email to Raya, so they, or someone in WPA/EPBF, are obviously reading this thread.

Dear Mr. Steffensen,

The World Ten Ball Championship a WPA and Raya Sports event is Definitely on (Sept 23 - Oct 5, 2008) and preparations for it are already in the homestretch. The World Nine-Ball Championship has been cancelled for this year (2008), but that is a different event held by Matchroom.

WPA has already sent invitations to over a hundred players qualified by their respective national federations from the US, Europe, and Asia, Etc.

Qualifiers for independent pool players is set from Sept. 23 to 27, 2008 at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City, Philippine and registration is on - going.

For complete information on the event, we wish to refer you to our website: www.rayasports.com and www.worldtenball.com.

Warmest regards,
SOL GUECO

I appreciate the email, though I don't understand why they needed to send it just to me. Why not post it here instead? Well, it made me feel a little important, so thanks ;)

Ste: Thanks. No haven't heard from the PICC, but it sure looks like the event will take place though.

However, do they have 400 000 $ in pricemoney to cash out to the players at the end of the tournament? Or will the players get excuses like "FedEx didn't deliver the checks", "Our sponsors haven't paid 100 % yet, but it is nothing wrong, just a small delay. Checks will be in the mail" etc etc.

I REALLY hope this event will push through, be successful, and that no players will be screwed.

I still find it a little strange though that they take the time to search for my emailadress, write an email where they inform me about the event, even though I didn't contact them, but they don't have time/desire to write some press-releases about the event... What would you do if you were in charge of such an event? Write to a nobody from Norway (a country who aren't even represented on the players list), to a guy who will not even be there as spectator, and inform that everything is ok, or inform the masses in the Philippines, trying to get some publicity around the event, making your sponsors happy?

I know what I would have done...

So, I still have a few $$ left to bet on this topic. It looks like the event will push through now, but will we hear any players complain about lack of not getting 100 % of their pricemoney, on time?

The window is still open!

A little reminder Jay. Try to recall past history when these guys kicked people, who they consider are not on their side, out of their Star Billiard Center Facility. That was the notorious Guinness Qualifier. As you wrote above, you're going to be there as an investigative reporter who has a gripe against Yen and Ian so that's a red flag for them. The good thing going for you is that you'll be doing that for Billiards Digest who bestowed unto Yen the "Man of the Year Award". Good luck and have fun Jay. Don't forget to bring your tranquilizers and give me a call to let me know where you're at always.

<<<< if this doesn't get you or BD a letter from them then I don't know what will. They hate me more than they hate you you know! LOL!!!

A very good example of what "Fair Business Practice" means to them! But then again what can you expect from Sol. There was no reason at all for him to include this sentence in his letter to you!!! :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1:

Regardless of what happened to me on a personal level, I will call it like I see it at the event. If they do a good job I will say so, and if they screw up, I'll report that as well. Main questions at this time will be; Is the money good? Who gets to play? Who is not allowed to play and why? And finally, How does this event compare with the last two WPC's held in Manila? They are the yardstick this one will be held up to.

P.S. My tranquilizer is named Michaela (not Tabb, this one's filipino). I always feel better when she's around. I'll be the one smiling! :)

Well finally, and I don't know why it wasn't done before, the WPA have spoken.

There can be no doubt now about this event is definitely on.

Not only the $400,000 but the possibility of extra prizes on top of that !!

I guess that this now puts this thread to bed.....

Or does it ????

You can send my money to Berry van Leeuwen in The Hague the Netherlands Banknumber 1107512 (ING bank) ;)

Now Berry, if you can give me your social security number also, I am sure we can have some fun, hehe.

With the recent press release from WPA, it seems like Roy is already right with the second condition in the bet; "The World Ten Ball Championship will not have 400 000 $ in pricemoney as announced"

The surprise is of course that WPA now has created an expectation about added money! Exciting times..

:rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: They're texting like crazy with all barrels firing using different numbers!:rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: Why on earth do they put so much priority on the internet? All they have to do is go all out with their newspaper and TV ads to inform as many people here in the Philippines of their event and to show sponsors that this really is a big deal of an event. Or ........ they really can't afford that!!! How can they afford the prize money, TV coverage and venue cost if they can't even advertise this event in the newspapers, radio and television? tsktsk! :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1: :rotflmao1:

If the event is on target then they don't have to do all this foolish stuff, right? Apparently and because of such responses I really am confident that my assessment of the situation is right on target. I guess I'm pushing buttons where it really hurts!!!!

Hi berry, I won't get in a pissing contest with you just yet because YOU'RE not here to know what's happening 1st hand. What info you get, for all you know, can be true or just propaganda. I'm not going to loose face if the whole thing doesn't happen as announced, the WPA camp will.
I don't loose face if it happens either because I just made sure that it will happen.

I'm living the reality of this WTBC preparations here berry and your invitation to wallow is in a puddle in Nothern Europe. Too freagin' freezing for me there.

what does "offered" mean in the PI

Edwin,

I noticed that the announcement said that the $400,000 in prize money will be "offered"

What does that mean in PI marketing ??

Here is the USA that oftentimes has a big "IF" following the "offer" !!!

Here, as it's used, means that the amount is definite unless followed by "if". So, the total prize money is $400,000.00. The additional prizes too has been mentioned before so I'm glad to see that mentioned again.

Wpa Quells Rumors

Despite the wild rumours that have been
circulating, the World Pool-Billiard Association
wishes to state unequivocally that the WPA World
Ten Ball Championship will take place as scheduled
in Manila on September 29 to October 5. At no
time have we considered this event to ever have
been in danger of being postponed or canceled.

Preparations and arrangements for the tournament
by Raya Sports are proceeding as planned. The
venue is the Philippine International Convention
Centre. Seven hotels led by Sofitel Philippine Plaza
are official hotel partners and will take care of
players and guests. Brunswick, Iwan Simonis and
Star Billiards are providing world-class equipment
and service. The tournament will be broadcast
internationally by ESPN.

A prize fund of $400,000 is on offer, and indeed
there may be an additional prize donated by
sponsors that will be announced by next week.

The entire tournament will be conducted under
the full supervision of the WPA. Mr. Thomas
Overbeck, WPA vice-president and sports director,
will be the Tournament Director.

For updated information about the WTBC, log into
the official website: www.worldtenball.com

hahaha, talk to the SMC reps that attended your PPT Palawan and tell them and the players that complained that they shouldn't tattle about these mind-blowing experiences. Tell Thorsten H. to take down his entry in his blog about the "yumburger" bribe to the school children so they'll attend your opening day to fill up your stands. Tell the Filipino players that were in attendance there to quit complaining about just getting water and not juices like what was served to the foreign players. Tell these players too to shut-up about needing to take a tricycle ride through muddy roads to get to the venue while the foreign players stay real close to the venue.

Order your Filipino players to quit complaining about the double-standard where they get the short-end of the stick! ASalvador, I have acquaintances within your organization and friends in places where your colleagues hang-out and brag. Loose lips sink ships!!!

Give us your real name so we'll know who this truthful and trustworthy ASalvador really is. Or do you like the safety of your screen name while spewing your lies and propaganda!

hahaha, somebody just told me that you can't be Tony B because he writes better than you, and you're not as laid back as Ernie F., you can't be baste Chua as he's not computer literate but you do have a better command of the english language than Sol Gueco. So, you must be one of those chicken sh%& moron siblings. Quit mistreating poolplayers.

Now tell us what this slip means. Atanaciosalvador "scolded" the reporter for a mistake made in the year when Pagulayan won the WPC. It can only mean that atanaciosalvador is either an executive in ABS-CBN or that atanaciosalvador is a PROPAGANDIST with this ABS-CBN reporter in his payroll.

A lot of the things said in the forums are allegations. Some are admissions. And some are really just give-aways.

Yes, we see newspaper reports like the ones posted in the forums (now we know that they were obviously paid for) but no, we have not seen the prize money mentioned nor TV/Print teasers. No posters yet. All we have seen are propaganda postings here. Quite risky for such a big event isn't it with just a few days to go.

But then again, things can work out IF indeed the WPA statement holds true that there may be an addition to the prize fund and IF there will be enough $400 entry fees.

All we want is a solid confirmation from Raya and not from the WPA people, who are not even in the country to see and feel the real situation.
