Worlds Greatest Player vs. the Peoples Champion

So you trained Mark on rail work?

Keep in mind, Mark was already a great table mechanic before I formed a friendship with him. He's been doing rail extention work all along, correcting pockets, the whole nine yards. I just showed him easier, better ways of getting things done, with better, faster end results.

Mark always cut his subrail off...never pieced it. I understand you are now cutting them off. Is it faster?

Greatest Player?

5x10 table,
40 second shot clock,
10ball last,
6 inch break box

I don't think this is really going to decide who the greatest player is. I think it will decide who plays the best with these stipulations. Stipulations that seem extraordinarily uncommon really.

IMO, deciding the greatest player would be playing the game the way it is currently played. The way TAR has done previous races to 100. The way Shane and Earl played last time.

Regardless, should be entertaining to see. Hope it goes off.

Just sounds like Earls removing allot of luck from the game. Richie Ambrose told me he beat Medina in his prime only because the one stipulation was you had to call your next ball and pocket before the shot.

I think the only thing that is really removing luck is call shot. Its not often you see either Shane or Earl shit a ball in for the win.

Sure the table size is going to make it harder to make balls, specifically long shots, but I don't consider that having anything to do with luck. The better ball maker will do better in the long shot accuracy category.

However, making the break spot limited to 6 inches in actually forcing the player to be even more lucky if that break spot is outside of the players comfort realm. We have all seen Shane consistantly break 10ball and make the 2nd ball in the side pocket. By taking that away its going to force the player to have to get lucky on the break.

I don't know. I'm sure it will be one hell of a match and I will definately buy the dvds, I just think playing the game the way it is currently being played will determine who is the greatest player.

I've played a match similar to this and it is not nice. It was kind of embarassing when you got out of line and it would have been FAR easier to make the object ball in a different pocket than what you called on the previous shot.

I'm not sure if I play that poorly or if the rules kind of messed with my head and the flow of things and that made me play poorly. Either way, it was a humbling experience. :o

Calling your next shot...

I've heard of this as well, but never personally seen it. I'm thinking in order to beat the 9 ball ghost this way, you'd have to be a mid-level pro or higher. Someone like a Bartram speed. What do you guys think?

I think a tourney director should try this out. This dramatically increases the skill gap. I cant tell you how many times I get frustrated watching a player dog position and still have a shot somewhere else or easy safe. I can imagine how it must feel to the pros.

If you want to limit what pockets the balls will go in and make players get get great position to run out, why not just play 15 rotation, call your pocket? That game dictates where balls can be pocketed. Believe that.

I don't get it, why in the heck are you guys so hell bent on changing 10 ball to the point that it's not even 10 ball anymore? Why not just elevate the table 5ft off the ground and make Shane and Earl walk around on stilts to play...that would be more entertaining than changing the game to the point that the rules they're playing under...are not even rules of the game anymore. What, are all these rules you guys come up with the "New" rules in which all Pro's must play under....or just Shane and Earl?

I actually agree, this game has some luck in it. People need to get over that. But you also have to be very skilled. This is going to sound weird, but I think there would be a whole lot less luck if you eliminated side pockets. haha Hear me out, most of the time when you over run corner position, you end up shooting in the side. Just sayin. haha

Here we go. Earl will play SVB on a 5x10 Diamond, 10 ball, race to 100 in 3 days. They will play at Ice Breakers Billiards in Youngstown Ohio sometime in February, probably the 11th, actual date will be published next week. The rules are 6 inch break box, call shot with the option, 10 ball last and a 40 second shot clock with a referee. The original professional table will be the battle field, a 5x10. Now lets see who the greatest player is. One stipulation is that the player that loses has the option to play another race the very next weekend on a 4 1/2 x 9 Diamond. This will be live streamed and taped for DVD sales. Now were talking.

Shane will win this.
In Earl's prime, I couldn't have bet against him, but now? I think it will be competitive, but Earl is certainly the dog in this matchup.

BLS.

Actually my post was to two individuals having a one on one conversation that was taking over the thread. They both seemed to understand that. Thanks for a great contribution to the thread yourself.
