Worlds Greatest Player vs. the Peoples Champion

I offered Johnny to play one set on his table and another on a table that Shane chooses and he declined. I offered him money odds if he played at Shanes choice of table and he declined.

I offered to stake Shane at Derby and he declined.

If there are any tremors I would guess it is with JA and not with Shane.

Oh and BTW Shane would play Johnny on his home table in a minute, I am just not willing to let everything go one players way unless we are stealing. That is why we are willing to play on a 10' table with a 6" break box to win free money.

john you are right here it is free money.

You should put Nevel in the box agains Earl, lol.

In a race to 100, playing 10-ball, call shot, break from the 6" break box, 10 ball goes last, on a 10' table...they wouldn't make it to through day 1 without one of them killing the other. lol.

Wow, you have a much tougher standard than I do.

In your opinion what does it take for a pool player to be somebody?

I see a few names on this list I consider somebody…

I also remember hearing the tell of a certain Pearl running in excess of 400 once upon a time, way back in the way back.
It was long enough ago he probably forgot the rules anyway.

Nobody plays straight pool, gimme a brake…
Actually, I’ll give you the brake ;)

Nobody gambles at straight pool was my meaning. In a thread about a gambling match I did not think that required clarification.

As far as I know in this country over the last 3 years I have been at every single high stakes 14.1 match. All two of them. I get that some people think the world went down the path to ruin the first time someone made the two ball after the one ball but the fact is no one gambles at straight pool. Not my fault, its just how things are.

As for a pool player being "somebody" I don't even know how to answer that as my post had nothing to do whatsoever about a player being "somebody" or not.

The cult of 14.1 can sometimes take itself a bit too serious. It's just a game dude. Chill.

SVB is a heavy favorite but I have to give Earl some props for his play in the last year. He won the US Bar table & Steve Mizerak Championship with tough fields.

I would be surprised if SVB doesn't win but it should be a closer match than the clinic Shane put on him in their last match.

The way we lost last time is negated. The first day Shane made it on the break 14 times and mounted a huge lead over the mighty Earl. This time it comes down to shooting and nobody in world can out shoot Earl.

Thanks for clearing it up. Always best to get the story straight from the source.

I understand your position, but I disagree with it. Shane and Archer are the two top players in the US. Archer has been the undisputed top player for 15 yrs before Shane came on the scene recently. It is on Shane's side to GO TO Archer and play him on a GC. If Shane wins that match, there would be no disputing he is the best. Archer is getting older. If you don't do this now, then the question of who is best will never be answered. Also, its not like Archer is asking for unreasonably terms. He just wants to play on a GC. Its common knowledge he doesn't like Diamond tables. Shane played Mika on a GC, so what's the problem? My opinion is the Shane camp owes it to the world to play Archer on a GC. Incidentally, I like Shane in that match up, so I'm not writing this from the viewpoint of an Archer groupie.

I actually agree, this game has some luck in it. People need to get over that. But you also have to be very skilled. This is going to sound weird, but I think there would be a whole lot less luck if you eliminated side pockets. haha Hear me out, most of the time when you over run corner position, you end up shooting in the side. Just sayin. haha

I seem to recall Jay Helfert relating a story about Earl ranting outside a tournament in the hall, and one of his gripes at that moment was that the side pockets should be done away with! :p

We owe it to the world? Johnny wants to play on a gc that has 3 7/8th's pockets. If johnny wants to play on a normal gc he can play in new york on the same table shane played mika.

Wasn't the first day a race to 33 or 35? I seriously doubt he made it on the break 14 out of 30ish times. I watched the match and don't remember anything like that.

It was a race to 30. If I am not correct I would bet it was 12.

Well said! I hope to see this match up while Johnny's in his prime.

That still seems like an enormous amount but I could be wrong. I've never seen anyone make the break over a long period at 40%. Who's the guy that keeps all the stats of break and runs etc? Didn't he post all of the stats of this match?
