Are her "friend" and "sidekick" (as JAM called them above) a help or a hindrance in this regard? I think she needs some SJM influence and perspective.

Scott,

I couldn't say as I really don't know her entourage that well. SJM would do wonders for her. I'd hate to see her talent wasted if she got burned out down the road.

I agree completely. She really needs someone to help guide her now on how to handle the pressure and what to expect. She needs a real mentor.

Barbara

BS- she needs someone to get her tail in college so she can have a fall-back plan.

Anna Kostanian has really stepped up her game as of late. Louie Roybal is now mentoring and coaching her. Louie is “old school” and has played the game as well as anyone. He has coached Ramona Biddle and shelly Barnes in the past. I think he is what she needs to get her game to the next level. She has a bright future being only 17 years old.

Pam needs to work on her temper a little......

I am really not sure a tournament director should be airing dirty laundry on a public forum. Such a situation as you mention is best left between you and the players and I am sure Pam would not appreciate your making the situation totally public like this one bit.

What "dirty laundry"? Anyone at the event saw what happened and then some that I won't get into.

If someone else at the event witnessed and heard the same thing I did and posted the post would you cry "dirty laundry"?

Hell, as far as I'm concerned, I should've taken the Q away from her and I won't go into what Pam said to me that just about set me off.

She's a frickin KID that needs to learn about winning and losing and the difference between the two states. I'm guessing this was her first loss at a pool tournament and it wasn't an easy one. She lost out to Sueyen Rhee for 4th. Sueyen won 3rd, Kim Shaw won 2nd, and Tiffany Nelson took the event. Wow. Who wouldn't have overwhelmed with that finish.

Why don't you take a time-out and think about what happened.

for the most part that the top names are pretty
spread out for the 1st round. Sarah Ellerby and
Pam Treadway look to be one of the most interesting
1st round matches. Isn't Pam the one that has been
coming on strong the last few months? A few run into
tough matches the 2nd round, but the 3rd round looks
to be a tough round with many top names running into
each other.

What time do they start playing?

Yes, this should be a great match! If I'm not mistaken, Pam's pro debut a couple months ago in Florida started out with a 5-1 deficit to none other than Sarah Ellerby! Pam recovered to win that match so Sarah will certainly be very focused for this match.

I don't know why, but I am reminded of a story Keith told me about Jean Balukas when she was at the peak of her game. :p

Apparently, the ladies and the gents used to play in the same events way back when. Jean Balukas was making the headlines, with pool magazines labeling her as "Queen Jean." She dominated the ladies-only tournaments. :D

At the 1986 BC Open [hope I got this date right], Keith was the defending champion, and he ended up having to play Jean Balukas. She plowed right through him, slamming him with a break-and-run 5-pack along the way.

Keith happened to pass Buddy Hall in the hallway as he was exiting the tournament room. Buddy had to face Queen Jean NEXT.

Buddy had already heard the news of Jean knocking down Keith, to include her powerful break. Before Keith could utter a word, Buddy said to him, "I don't even want to hear it, Keith." And he proceeded along his way in deep thought to the designated table. :p

Jean Balukas then took down the legendary Buddy Hall, keeping him benched as she proceeded to run a 7-pack before a packed house. The spectators were all on Jean's side at this juncture! :D

In the early days of the ladies pro organization, Jean Balukas was a loner a lot of the time when she was in the ladies-only tournaments. One day when she got beat, her opponent made what seemed to Jean as a lucky shot, and when Jean told her she thought it was a lucky shot, the organization wanted to impose fines and punish Jean for the comment. Though Queen Jean was a champion, she had suffered isolation on the women's tour and this incident culminated in her calling it quits. :(

Queen Jean unscrewed her stick and said she'd NEVER play professional pool again. On top of her game, and she hung up her cue, professionally speaking that is. Maybe there was more to that story, but I often wondered what would have happened if Jean Balukas stuck it out and continued.

I've been told by a few players who saw Jean Balukas play in her prime that they see a little "Queen Jean" in young Pamela Treadway. One observation was that Pam plays just as good as Jean Balukas did at 18 years of age, maybe even better. :)

She hasn't lost any Tiger Planet Pool events. She's played in other tourney's & not won. She's still up & coming.... it's been fun to watch so far...she's young, talented & has a lot of heart! She's been down 6-1 in a race to 7 and fought back to win the match. Sure, there's stronger women players out there...that's why she's up & coming... still learning & getting better. Definitely keep your eye on her. ;)

Pam had an astounding 5 tournament undefeated opening streak on the Tiger Planet Pool tour. But...all streaks must end. Tour veteran Kathleen Lawless defeated her down at the last event in Cambridge a couple weeks ago. This current WPBA event will be an opportunity to see her turn it back on!

Hey Listen,

I would love to see Pam succeed in the WPBA Tour, but someone has to step up and help coach her about life stories. I wish someone had done that for me when I was 17 and a champion in the sport I was succeeding in.

Win Loss
Laura Smith 9 Sueyen Rhee 5
Sarah Rousey 9 Debbie Schjodt 7
Don Hopkins ? Phillis Fernandez ?
Miyuki Sakai 9 Susan Williams 6
Janet Atwel ? Jane Fujinaga ?
Belinda Calhoun ? Liz Ford ?

The WPBA brackets show Sueyen Rhee winning her match not Laura Smith. Hope that's the way it went!

as much as i love the game of pool, being a retired math teacher i cant agree with you more, pool is not a giver , its a taker, education is a giver and it gives and gives everyday. and long after you lost the stroke you once had youve still got the education. some may argue that maybe play while your young and go to school later,it might work for some.i wish her the best of luck in pool, but a solid bet with no luck needed is a good education

You guys are wasting your time using good sound logic on a "pool Player". The glamour, recognition, instant gratification is more important to them.

And the leeches who feed off them will jump all over you for trying to lure their gravy train away.

What I think is funny about all of the talk about this 'Kid' is that I know so many other folks (male and female) that still act like this and they are in their 30s and 40s!

It is a real shame that Ms. Balukas has decided to hang up her cue professionally.
JAM, thank you for such a wonderful report.

Hey JAM, I've heard different variations to Jean's story but your's is the one that I've heard the most. Jean is phenomenal and I love watching her take her opponents down in her weekly tournaments at Hall of Fame Billiards on Thursdays.

Jam, I had the pleaseure of meeting Pamela last weekend at the Viking Tour event at the Rack in Livonia, MI. I expect to see many great wins from her because of her talent and understaning of the game. Pamela has an excellent personality and was a pleasure to have at my event.

I wish her the best of luck at the WPBA event.

Mj

My aren't you the humble type.............no mention of YOU beating her in the tournament???

OOPS........sorry Mike, hope I didn't knock anything for you.

The way I rate a female player is to compare them to a man's game, power on the break, a strong stroke and a deep desire to win that's almost overwhelming at times.

There's only two women that had that kind of game since I've been playing, Lori Shampo and Jean Balukas. They both played like men.

I think that Pam might have that but only time will tell. I've told her plenty of times to go back to school, go back to school, go back to school but when the dark side starts to get ahold of you it's tough to turn back.
