Hello everyone. I just purchased my first wrapless Sugartree cue ( the 2008 TAR cue) and I must say that although I have played with a SW with a wrap for many years, I feel that, apart from this being the absolute best hitting cue I have had to date, that I get more feel and a better "connection" to my cue that I ever did hitting with a cue with a wrap. I was just curious other players preferences concerning wrap vs wrapless. Thoughts? Comments....

No Wrap. I'd never ever play with a wrap on my cue again. And actually, most people I've talked to who switch wish they would have done it sooner. To each their own, but I'd never go back to a wrap.
 
One of my favorite cues I had when I was still learning the game was a cheapie "Stealth" cue, if I remember right. The one thing I really liked about that cue is that it had the look of a linen wrap but it was varnished over so it felt like a wrapless. Always had a special place in my pool memories for that cue, heh.
 
I have always preferred wrapless, but last year I bought two cues with elephant ear wrap and I like it much better than wrapless. Nice, solid grip.
 
I have played with two wrapless cues besides house cues and sneakypetes.

I like them just fine but if I had to choose, I would pick leather or lizard wraps.

I've played with wrapped cues (leather, linen, lizard etc.) for years and I ran across a good buy on a wrapless cue that I liked the looks of and I bought the cue and started playing with it. I was amazed at how much I liked the way it felt and the feel I got playing with it. I now use the wrapless cue as my main playing cue, but I also have a cue with an elephant ear wrap that I like a lot also. The 2 cues feel totally different so I guess it what feels right for you.

I to for years played with Wrap on my cues..got my first old David
Howard..Star of David that had the coated linen wrap..tried to go
back to wrapped on occasion with the purchase of a couple Monsters
i bought..couldn't do it..not even the Elephant compared to the feel
of the slick no slip wrappless..will never try to change again!!...SA
 
old like me

i believe what makes me like the no wrap is the many early years i played off the wall. over the years i just got to like the feel of wood in my hand [ no pun ] then i played for 20 years with a wrapped josswest.
as i started to build cues, i decided i liked the look of a great piece of wood in the handle area instead of a piece of leather or linen. now i play with only no wrap, and of the 300 plus cues i have built only 3 have had a wrap.

Another plus for wrapless cues is it gives cue makers more room to add inlays or highly figured woods for the handle areas. I struggled with linen wraps for years trying to get the feel right, but it's not a problem at all with wrapless cues.

One of my good friends who's up in years and started playing pool when he was 8 years old told me that he will only play with a wrapless cue.

Strange, strokerace is the only one to almost mention Meucci. Started playing with a David Howard Model 3 while Mike Sigel was involved with Bob. Did Meucci create the first "wrapless" cues? Other than a house cue or "sneaky pete" of course.

Had Evan Clark redo my Six Windows over ten years ago. Created a look similar to the BW line of cues offered by Schon today. Still love the "wrapless" feeling after all these years. Still have a wrap on my break cue though. Better control (I think).

no wrap all day long in my book...
i have always played with a wrapless cue just a beter feel for me..
i have wanted a southwest for years, this year i got my first one..
well.. it was traded less than 2 months after having it.. i wont get another wraped cue ..wrapless is for me..
 
Count me as a fan of the wrapless. I own several now.

Why have a wrap when you can have beautiful woods in the grip section of the cue?

Here's the newest addition to my shooters... picked it up from my local cue maker (Dave Jones) just a week or so back. The woods are thuya burl and afzelia burl. All white is ivory. The short points are pink ivory.

Back in the day..i never saw another Cue maker other than Meucci that
clear coated over Linen..I like the feel of the clear coat better than just
wood..and it looks great..The Meucci Star of David had a white linen wrap
coated and it looked the same 5 years later..I'd say Meucci pioneered this
process and it was well received..SA

I play with a SW as well and curious about the wrapless thing.

That is a gorgeous cue! And I agree with the sentiments of "why have a wrap when you can let the cuemaker display his/her art and craft?" I personally prefer wrapless cues for not only the superior feel/grip (like another poster mentioned, it's the closest/most-intimate connection from your hand to the cue without anything in-between), but also because of the aesthetics reasons. More of the cue is "open for viewing."

I have a Noel Mendoza "Hugo Patino" model wrapless cue, myself:

I do have some wrapped cues, and the wrap I prefer is the Tiger Stack Leather wrap, which is as close as you can get, feel-wise, to a wrapless cue. I'm in the process of having all (or most) of my wrapped cues converted to Tiger Stack Leather wraps.

You can see the gloss of a stack leather wrap here (this is just one example of the many different styles, colors, and motifs available):

But if I'm in the market for a new cue, it's wrapless right off the bat.
