wrapless cues?

Not saying the others here are wrong but just giving you my 2 pennies. I've owned and own quite a few cues both wrapped and wrapless and my experience is just the opposite of what some others are saying in that I find a linen wrap provides a bit of tackiness for my light grip and the cue slips less on me because of that. So right now my player is wrapped.

As far as looks though, it's a no brainer, a nice piece of wood in the handle of an unwrapped cue definitely adds to the overall beauty.

And for the main point of your post like others said, cue maker preference, expense and tradition are why you don't see as many.

Most of my cues are wrapless. My "learning-stage" cues were all wrapped. However, when I got to play my 1st wrapless, I instantly fell in love with the way it feels so I've always preferred wrapless ever since.

Aside from the feel and natural beauty of the wood being highlighted, one of the advantages of having a wrapless cue is the ease of maintenance as you only need to wax/detail the entire butt from time to time without skipping the wrap area. Also, there's less likely to develop moisture in the case since sweat is easily removed by just wiping the cue, unlike with wraps that trap the moisture.

I find it easier tho to do the slip stroke with wraps. Wrapless can become tacky when the wax starts to wear down (of course the solution is to wax it again)

wrapless for me

I prefer wrapless cues also. I tend to reach a little further back on the cue and I hate the feel of two different surfaces under my hand. I would need to either extend the wrap area or move the entire wrap area further back to use a wrap but the other issue is that I played off the wall for almost all of the time I played serious pool and a cue with a linen wrap just doesn't feel right to me. I haven't played with a leather wrapped cue enough to have an opinion of them but doubt I would like anything other than smooth leather for the reasons given above.

Clearcoat-too sticky
Glossy leather, lizard-too sticky
Regular irish linen-too slippery
wrapless oil finish-perfect
smooth leather matte finish-perfect

i prefer wrapped cues, mainly cuz i use it to feel where my hand is on the cue. i generally hold it where the wrap and buttsleeve meet and i use it to feel where my hand is. my snooker cues are wrapless, but they have a flat spade on them that you can use to orient the cue. i do like a tacky grip though, so for linen wraps i put sanding sealer on it to make it stickier.

I prefer wrapless for two reasons.

1. IMO, wraps don't all feel the same. Some are tacky and others are not. They also tend to get dirty and the feel changes again.

2. I like the looks of wrapless cues better than wrapped.

I own a Blackheart cue. Here's the link to some wrapless cues

Is that handle ( looks like Indian Rosewood ) cored?

wrapless

hey anyone wanting wrapless cues ,should check out crown cues ,great workmanship and hit .i own no 29 on thier site.nice prices also.

I think it is all personal preference. The costs can be high or low depending on the woods used and intermittent ringwork on a wrapless cue, or linen, cork, leather, or exotic skins. In general, I don't like wrapless cues with points or alot of inlay work. I think most plain janes look best wrapless, or with some type of leather, but not linen. That's what makes us all individuals.

I prefer anything but linen. I have some wrapless and some wrapped with some sort of leather. My current player is wrapped with lizard skin.
As for not making wrapless I'd have to say I've noticed more wrapless.

I use to always say that I could'nt play with a wrapless cue but the truth is I had never played much with a good wrapless cue only house cues. Now that I do play with some quality wrapless cues I like them and a wrap has started to feel funny to me .... I seem to prefer a wrapless player now ... But think it is really only a matter of what you are use to...
