WTF? my thread deleted but this "Sticky" ^^^ is ok?

post

I had the info I posted removed..the only way to do that was to remove the whole thread all together'. Sorry for the trouble..the sensitive confidential info was not for all ears in a open fourm..
I want to apologize to all my fellow mechanics on this site if I offended any of you guys...
Because I know I might of have ticked off a few of the best guys on here,
Sorry,

This thread could have been avoided with a thorough search before asking questions. The forum already provides the basics for someone with reasonable skills to set up, level, recushion, and recover their table. Even major repairs and restorations are pretty well documented. What more does a DIYer need? Most of my questions have been answered right away. I got different opinions, picked the one I liked and went with it. I can only think of one question I asked that seemed to be ignored. Maybe I touched on a secret:wink:

That's because when I only have one chocolate chip cookie left....I'm not telling anyone where it's at:grin:

So I asked the question in the other thread, but I think I've already got a pretty good idea of the answer. It does seem like the homeowners/DIYers (in general) want detailed specific information posted on any and every aspect of what we do and don't think any of that information should be kept from them.

The mechanics (again, in general), struggling week-to-week or otherwise, seem to be ok with sharing general knowledge and comparing notes, tips, tricks, etc. but are hesitant to give out other more specific info it took them decades to learn.

Is there a middle ground? Someone else mentioned the fact that some sites for vehicle mechanics charge to answer questions. There's a TON of information already in these forums that we HAVE posted for free. As much as I hate the I-know-something-you-don't-know mentality (you know who I'm talking to), I do think as mechanics, we should show a little restraint on how much of our valuable trade secrets we should give away for free, and homeowners should consider the fact that this is how we feed our kids. If that pisses you off, and you want to find another forum with this much info for nothing, so be it and good luck to you.

Define high priced??...I'm probably the highest priced table mechanic in this country job for job...but with the jobs I get, sometimes they also take 2, 3, 4 and sometimes 5 days to complete, so does that make me over paid, under paid...or...paid for the work I did?
.......

Glen, observing the work you did on my table over 4 days (it would have been longer if my wife hadn't given me such a hard time - I still feel bad about that), you are definitely NOT overpaid. If anything you underprice yourself, but that's your business. Anyway, thank you again for the best table I ever played on.

Josh,

I think most of us agree on this subject. I believe we can still help without giving too much away. Answers should be generalized such as

Question: how do you install cloth?
Answer: Tight as humanly possible using glue and or stapling method.

Question: how do you level a table?
answer: using a quality precision level, make the bubble be in the middle everywhere on the table. This is the shortened version of glens. lol

If YOU really want to help a guy out, have him call or pm you for specifics.

I know as a homeowner/doy I come to these threads because the information is not available any place else. I know in the other thread we were talking about an auto mechanic and chiltons manuals. well, there is no chilton manual, or a good step by step, for doing pool tables. I don't think this needs to be given away for free on a forum though, but until glen gets done with his video's this is all we have. I myself don't mind paying for information. I've already spend well over 600 bucks on cue building videos and books, but these are not available for table mechanics, and if they are i'm sure there outdated. If anybody knows a good site where a guy like me can purchase knowledge then by all means, please post it!!!

what i think is funny, when someone calls me from another state asking for specific information. i've had people state that there not taking any business from me. but i've replied it will be taking away from someone like me, in your area, and hopefully when someone calls him, from my area, he will say the same.

I'd be real simple when I get to someone's house to just tell them...hey buddy, you need to just throw that table away and get you a new table because that things a piece of shit....but I don't do that, because I'm a table mechanic, and that means...can I fix this table, if so...what should I charge for this job?...how much are the materials going to cost?...in the end...is it going to be worth it...to the customer?...If a table is a piece of shit...do I still work on it...just because I need the money? Unlike most other mechanics, I do have the luxury of saying..."no thanks, I think I'll pass on this one"

Try to understand for a second, waking up Monday morning and taking a look at the work you have scheduled for the next week...and seeing you don't have ANY work coming in...meaning NO income, so you have to try and scramble up some work so you can keep up with your bills...that still have to be paid......AND THEN...you read about someone getting upset...because you didn't sit down for free...and post the information they were asking for....for free...all the while...thinking of how you're going to make it through NEXT week...with NO work scheduled, hoping someone will call your phone for work, but for back up....you start calling everyone you know with a pool table....to see if they need something done.

In OTHER words....put yourself in the shoes of a table mechanic for once, and a good one at that...BEFORE you pass judgment:rolleyes: while you put in your 40 hour work week!!!

Glen

I hope your future is prosperous and full

High priced is relative and comes with having to pay someone for his travel ..etc...There are plenty of great mechanics in this area that don't don't even know this forum exists and why should they.......they have work.

First of all...I've never charged anyone "travel time". Second, because I've been all over this country, I've also seen the work of table mechanic's all over this country, I don't have to meet a mechanic to know if he knows what he's doing or not, all I have to do is see the work, and with the exception of a few mechanics...I'm not impressed with the general level of table mechanics in this country today.

And last but not least, you're on the fence when you make comments implying that if a mechanic is on here posting...we must not have any work to do.

That's like implying "YOU" must be unemployed to have so much time to post here on AZ:rolleyes:
