This is just the most exciting thing that can happen to pool, ever. The segregation between Asian players from the rest of the pool world is just sad.

Maybe the IPT $$$ is going to fix that! Very interesting times ahead...

Well, Asia is half a world away from us. Maybe it's not segregation, and simply travel distance/expenses. It's pricy to bounce back and forth around the world.

Well, I think it's more than that. The San Miguel Tour, for instance, doesn't allow European or American players. So, it goes both ways.

What you're saying is right, there is (was?) no monetary incentive for Asian players to come play in the West. But there is also draconian politics involved.

lewdo,
Tough bracket - Wu, Paez, Ortmann. A local pro from Indy (Jeff Beckley) is in the same bracket, I hope he took some Wheaties with him (though he's quite capable of beating anyone).

I completely agree here, Lewdo. If Wu played the IPT, it might be the first step into integrating the absolutely awesome contingent of players from Taiwan into pool's mainstream.

I truly believe that Fong Pang Chao, Po Cheng Kuo, Pei-Wei Chang, and many other Taiwanese superstars would seriously consider following suit if Wu qualified and made a large income on the IPT.

I wonder if APBU's bullying of its own is beginning to backfire, and Wu has the guts and the game to take a shot at a tour that embraces all the players of the world. Perhaps pools "Iron Curtain" is beginning to fall.

Wu can be sure of one thing --- I'll be rooting for him to succeed!

I don't think San Miguel tour players should be allowed to play in the IPt until they sit out the San Miguel for a year or open it up for all players. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Now that the IPT is waving big money around all the San Miguel players are going to travel here and try to qualify. I'm not sure I articulated my point very well but I'll let my post stand.

Although the APBU did have a press release about its players not allowed to play on the IPT, Mr. Tu is more than supportive to see Taiwanese players joining the IPT. This is not hearsay and is what I heard from Mr. Tu himself.

Mr. Tu is not a bully nor is his organization. Wu is also allowed to play on any of the Taiwanese tour even if he wins, this applies to all the Taiwanese players.

In this year's BCA, a top Taiwanese player got the invite but declined it because he could not see the benefits in terms of money coming over. A lot of them are not coming over because it is just too expensive.

Best wishes to Wu.

Richard

That is just awesome! I wish I could be there to watch.

One thought as to why Wu is the lone representative...maybe his parents decided for him - he is only 16, lol. :p

$$ is always biggest problem. The same reason, american also harldy attended asia tours, such as Japan Open, All Japan Open and other Japan events. They even rarely attended the WPC qualifying tournments.

break even..

From the IPT website : Chia- Ching Wu - Won $500 bonus for getting eight ball on the break. Won $5,000 for running six consecutive racks.

He's probably break even already on his expenses right now.

I agree, this tournament is amazing. With world class snooker players from the UK here also.

Anybody knows if alot of the pros in this qualifier would play in the Gold Country Casino bar table tournament?

If you look up bullying in the dictionary, you'll see a copy of this letter:

Dear WPA Board Members,

For your information, after the WPA meeting, APBU has the following new policy in place effective October 12th, 2005.

Best regards,
Spencer Shiau
APBU General Secretary
APBU - Asian Pocket Billiard Union

Impose/put a ban on a player for a specific period of time:

1. The followings apply to all players in Asia.
2. Player who participates in the tournament/event that is not sanctioned by both APBU and WPA, the player will be banned by the APBU for one year.
3. In the above situation, the ban will be effective from the first day of that tournament and will be for 365 days.
4. During the ban period, the player can not play in the APBU or WPA sanctioned tournament/event.
5. During the ban period, any nomination for this banned player by the national association is not valid. If the banned player is nominated, this nation will be treated as forefeit this quota spot.
6. The banned player's name and country will be made public in the annoucements, including APBU internet info site and notices.
7. Ban by APBU will be also notified to WPA World Pool-billiard Association. WPA and its other continental federations will support and follow through the same ban notice sent from APBU.

APBU did everything in its power to bully its players out of trying to play the IPT. Timing is everything, and this came just after the inaugural IPT event between Sigel and Jones, but before IPT King of the Hill event.

Defend APBU all you want, but this letter is a disgrace, and now that it has failed to keep the Asian players at home, some APBU powers probably realize they have little choice but to embrace those opting to play the IPT, before they squander the goodwill they have built up with the susperstars of Asian pool.

Yes, the APBU is a bully of the worst kind.

SJM,

You and I will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Richard

That no problem, Richard. This forum works because two people look at the same picture and see two different things. Usually, both make a valid point.

Maybe you're right. Perhaps APBU has seen the light, and their letter, that shocked many on this forum, represents an exception to the pursuit of their ideals.

I do fully understand what the APBU and Mr Tu have meant to pool over the years. Their great contribution to the game is undeniable, and will be felt for many, many years.

It is so great to see Wu participating I don't know where to begin. I would like to see Wu wins his tour card mostly because of the message it will send to his countrymen in Taiwan, if he makes it onto the tour I'm sure many other players from Taiwan would follow in his footsteps. I was also glad to see Ortmann in there although it's a shame him and Wu have to play each other so early in the qualifier:(

And a great pic of Wu in action at the IPT Qualifier...
