WWYD to run 3 & out.

The ifs in 1 hole are endless. Regardless, going forward puts you outside all the balls with all of that 4.5 feet pointing at the wrong hole. What if you missed? Even if you land as indicated, there's a billiard and a direct cut with near impunity.

My opponent would smell blood if I took that shot. Me.. I'd most likely bank the 5 next.
Yup, not a bad choice. The only problem is getting a little too much angle that would send whitey uptable (not being able to run out and maybe even giving up the game if you happen to miss that gimme bank).

Similarly, at the end game with only a ball or two left, it's always a tough choice between taking easy position on a table length bank or trying the harder position to get behind the ball for the straight in shot. I find, if winning is REALLY important, choose the easy position to shoot the bank. I've seen DO get position behind a ball 10-12 inches from the back rail. I think if the match was on the line though, he would always set up for the bank.

Good point, loading up with inside spin leads to surprising misses.

Really, while it's fun to discuss the best shot, sometimes you can't choose until you get down on a shot and get a good feel for the exact angle you have. To me, it looks really easy to pull that cueball back exactly where you want it; getting down on the shot may feel different.

Many a man has gone broke thinking his opponent can't do that all night though.

That's the kind of thing that breaks men.
I have x amount of stroke/talent. Not playing/practicing lately does not help (excuse on record). If my opponent is much stronger I guess I'd go for the runout.... If I can see a decent pattern or create one. It's fun watching a 3C player execute.

I think the best shot here is going to depend on the exact positions of the balls and the table. A student of mine has a table with cloth so slippery that there is no way the reverse is going to grab on the follow+left shot. The cue ball will just slide up to the middle of the table and sit there spinning in place laughing at you.

While the shot shown leads to an easier run if it works, it's less likely to work than the simple draw shot. Your speed has to be correct within a few inches and most people will have trouble with that especially because of the reverse that kills speed.

I think, (being one) 3C players see, 'playing position, running ball and the use of more than 1 tip of any type of English normal.

I even think that many will agree that Efren's experience with 'Carom' games was one of his strongest attributes playing rotation games and defiantly at 1 hole.

Yes and if you don't get back into a very small window your run is OVER...and you might be in a bad spot. I'm sticking the four and then banking the FIVE. With some nice quiet bottom inside I should push away the 11 and have a possible shot on the FIFTEEN. This is by far the most sensible play. Repeatable and percentage play. The game says you need 3. It doesn't have to be in one turn to be the correct play.

I could have made it a little clearer! I'm trying to get out here.

The 4 has a little angle to the CB, even playing for the bank on the 5 ball it could be easy to lose the CB from there. Could clip the 11 thin, No shot.

I included the diagram to show the close proximity of all the balls.

They are All in a 1.3 diamond square. A tight squeeze.

I completely overlooked that this is a What Would You Do? I would draw from the 4 for a shot on the 15. After the 15 I would bank the 5 crossing it and freezing the cue ball to the back of the 11.

Wait a minute...holding up a simple snap shot vs powering through with a ton of inside 9 feet to a 3" target zone is a problem? Yeah...no.

I guess the % lies with the player that's shooting it.
Congrats on great execution and run out. With all due respect, that is a low percentage shot for anyone. Reverse English off of any rail is a guess and especially adding the contact of the object ball, add length and a small target area...the sharks are circling. As others said before, the percentage play is a soft draw. I challenge you to play the out 100 times each way and post your the recording. Prove me wrong and ill be impressed.

I don't need to prove anything to an 'Unprofessional everything.' LOL.

Maybe some forgot the first BIG 4 letters in this thread. WWYD. Bob did.

All I have to do is make it 'Once' for the Cheese.

If you like you can post a vid playing the 'Draw' shot.

Just Please place the balls as per diagramed.

Try to freeze whitey on that rail (see image below).

If you draw into the 15, you'll probably still have the 5 bank.

If you draw into the 5, you still have an easy shot on the 15.

If you draw a little too far, you'll probably have the 11.

If you do happen to freeze yourself on the rail, you're probably going to be close to straight on the 15. Roll in the 15 and then bank the 5.

You will never miss that 4 with a little draw (but you could shooting the power reverse).

Most importantly, you have no chance of missing position by six inches and freezing yourself to the wrong side of the 11.

Funny story, I used to play a guy that was about 5% better than me in one-pocket. In a normal long session, I would end up a 3 or 4 game loser. On a good day I may break even or end up a rack or two ahead. On a bad day, I may be a 10-game loser. Because I could sometimes hold my own or even end up a little ahead, he wouldn't give me anything. He was kind of a jerk and I really wanted to beat him. One day we agreed to play but a buddy of mine was allowed to coach me. My buddy and I played about even but he probably moved a little better than me. Anyway, with just a small amount of even slightly better advice, I would that session decisively. Most racks weren't even close.

That session taught me how big a difference just a few better decisions make in 1-pocket when two guys are fairly close.

I think WWYD has been answered by the crowd. Most would soft draw and by my post, you can conclude I would too. Part two of WWYD is raise the bet!

FJK, so as per the diagram blown up, it looks like (and I knew it) only a '1 ball width' lane to go through.

I'm just spit balling here, catch the left side of 15 thin may land on 5 or bad bank angle. Run into 15 full, 15 goes into 11 done.

CB possible results.

The great thing about 1 pocket is that there is usually a shot for several skill levels. Playing a couple of times a week , working and raising a family means most guys even if they shoot well, don't have consistent pin point speed. Just not enough play to dial in perfectly , like someone there every day ,all day playing for money. The correct shot ,no matter what skill level in my mind , is the one you can make most of the time , unless a desperate situation arises. Even then there are usually alternatives besides" you or me" .
That said, the back and forth shape for Bill is the correct shot, for him., While the correct shot for me and probably most people here is to shoot the 4 and get a good angle on the bank. I made that bank 90% of the time when I was playing and if I get the angle I am playing for I will get a shot on my third ball playing shape. I usually ran out in these positions even as a B player. Even if the cross table shot were the right shot in every pros mind in the world, it was never the shot for me , I didn't get to practice enough. I can appreciate the skill, I just can't duplicate it. I could look good losing with it, but that was never my goal.
I have never understood why these wwyd s turn into arguments on what the correct shot is , what would you do , as far as I am concerned means every shot selection seemed viable to the person that posted it, now if you say What is the best way to assure you run these balls , or what would the majority of the top 20 players in the world shoot, yeah , there is room for argument . WWYD should never create an argument in my opinion..
Pick the shot you like , and maybe remember a couple others ,in case a situation comes up that calls for it, or your skill level jumps up to be able to make the shot consistently.

I would disagree with what I put in bold above. The only way this would be correct is if Bill can't draw the ball. My assessment at this level would conclude that to be false. Therefore we are all subject to the variables of physics and this would prove not to be the correct shot for him. I could analyze this from another perspective and conclude Bill has a mental illness or is an adrenaline addiction or is a recovering gambling addict who fell off the wagon. I just can't conclude this is the correct shot in any rational scenario. Sometimes we just don't know what's good for us. One thing is for sure, he can shoot what ever the hell he wants too and did.

I don't think anyone is arguing or criticizing, just having fun debating the best pattern. And even if someone does choose a low percentage pattern, who cares, it's all fun. I have found myself shooting the wrong shot just because it's more exciting. Having all that been said, please draw that ball next time.
