Yet, Another Poll Thread!

Would you pay a monthly fee to participate on AzBilliards Discussion Forum

  • Yes, I would gladly pay a small monthly fee.

    Votes: 26 19.4%
  • No. I will never pay a monthly fee.

    Votes: 89 66.4%
  • I am not sure and would have to think about it.

    Votes: 19 14.2%

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
Could you pay a monthly fee to make sure someone doesn't post here anymore?

What about purchasing a subscription for someone else?

I don't have any problems with a small monthly fee for these forums. None at all.

At the very least, it would keep all the cheap ba$dard$ from posting their crap.

The largest photography forum on the net is here... http://www.dpreview.com/. Some threads contains over a million messages and this forum is totally free. This has been brought up on this site several times and the consensous is that business would decline if users were required to pay.

However, azbilliards.com might want to have a link for donations via paypal. I would gladly make a donation.:)

In reading Jerry Forsyth's recent thread about the advertising that sometimes occurs on AzBilliards Discussion Forum, I began to think about the costs associated with running a website like this, keeping it up to date, the incredible picture galleries, changing servers, dealing with objectionable subject matters, getting the pool news on the Main Page, keeping the tournament news current, player profiles with pictures and other information, et cetera.

AzBilliards Discussion Forum is the premier website for most pool enthusiasts. Though many of us frequent other great websites from time to time, most of us keep coming back. :)

For me, posting on this forum is kind of like walking into my neighborhood tavern. I want to know what's happening and with who. Sometimes, if I do happen to miss a day or two of reading AzBilliards, I find it takes me a while to catch back up. Years ago, I read every single thread on this forum. Today, that is quite the impossibility. :o

So I decided to create a blind poll, just for fun. Your name will not be revealed. So all you lurkers can cast a vote with confidence that your identities will not be revealed.

Would you pay a nominal monthly fee to participate on AzBilliards forum? Let's say the hypothetical nominal monthly fee would be $5. Would it turn you off to pay for this forum, and you would then never come back? Would you gladly pay a mere 5 bucks? Are you uncertain about whether you would or would pay?

Remember, this is only hypothetical. Any and all thoughts are welcome if you would like to contribute to this thread, too. Thanks in advance to all respondents who cast a vote in this BLIND poll. :)

JAM

This may be one of the most valuable Thread that anyone has ever written. Mike owes you one, JAM. Nice subject. While I could be persuaded to pay, I think most wouldn't and then the forum wouldn't be the same. Don't forget about the many lurkers who frequent here as well.

I say grow AZ even larger at no charge to viewers and charge the advertisers.

Personally, I would put some SERIOUS limits on the free advertisements, especially in the MAIN FORUM. I do however love to read genuine reviews by purchasers of individual products (who are regular AZ members).

Mike can ride herd on these guys if he chooses but he probably should have a written policy so that everyone KNOWS.

Individual sales- No charge.
Commercial Enterprise- Small fee.

Just my thoughts.

He's funny sometime, but he posts TOO much. His wife wishes he'd go get a REAL job and stop living off her. He voted NO in JAM's Poll.

Doug
( I rated him an 82, he has a good beat and he's easy to dance to, but I wouldn't buy him ) :)

If I'm willing to pay $5 a month to read your posts maybe this is your calling! If your wife says you need a real job you could become a professional poster. How many eskimos would you need paying $5 a month to read you would you need? :D  :D

LOL, I thought 'used moo-moos' were partially eaten cows....... and as you well know, there are NO leftovers at my house.

Then, I found these mu-muus and figure that's what you're talking about. Don't be surprised but I like them (even though they only picture wimmins wearing them)....

I'd love to walk into the poker room wearing one, or even playing pool in one. I wonder if 'we' (AZBers) could put out a line of these with pool cues, pool balls, playing cards, etc. on them, for the real MEN that are secure in their sexuality.

Why in the world would you think I was referring to those? I just could get the words out of my mouth. I was thinking about the story about poor old Scotty all taped up by his wife with him trying to say, "forty dollar bet". :D :D :D

Great thread, Jam!!!!!!!!

Not only did I vote Yes, I think it should be implemented in a different way, though. I don't think a monthly fee is the way to go. I tthink that when you initially sign up, everyone must become a paying member to participate. A yearly one time fee of $50 for a basic membership sounds fair. if you intend on selling multiple items throughout the year (set a reasonable threshold for the individual occasional sellers), a premium membership would be required. Perhaps another $50 per year.

I think the overall quality of the forum content would increase. It would instantly eliminate the bozo's, and multiple personalities. certainly, a paying member would know that the other contributers REALLy want to be here.

I also suspect that the advertising dollars wont change at all. They would atleast know they are reaching a very committed crowd. Furthermore, any revenue shortfall would probably be met and surpassed by the paid memberships.

GO FOR IT, MIKE!!!!!!

Remember Teacherman that you all got barred several years ago---he has his own website, nothing related to pool, it is all related to hitting in baseball. He is one of the foremost experts on the subject. He has many pro scouts, major & minor league hitting instructors, and even a few players on his site posting.

For his private forum:

The subscription fee is $25/year, or $8/quarter, or $3/month.

Currently: Threads: 634, Posts: 4,618, Members: 255

Not bad for a non advertised site that has been up for only since December, 2006.

Believe me, it can be done.

Wow. After a 24-hour period, the poll results are very revealing. I guess the people have spoken! :p

One thing I take away from this thread, more than anything, is what one poster stated so eloquently. I will, however, change the words up a bit and mock a famous pool quote. Forums free are sweeter than forums which are paid for.

There is something to be said about receiving so much enjoyment, as the AzBilliards Discussion Forum members do, for nothing, no monies, no payment. It's here for the taking, and the only qualifications for membership, in essence, is a strong passion for pool.

Though some of us may belong to smaller factions and clans within the pool culture as a whole as we hold onto our blessed opinions ever so tightly, the common thread that binds us together is that we, in fact, are all members of the Tribal Nation of Pool. :)

This is the first I have seen of this thread. Sorry, my better half is out of town and I am doing the whole Mr Mom thing this week.

This is something I have thought about and it has been suggested numerous times.

If we did this, then I would want the basic forums to always remain free. Subscribers would get additional benefits though. Benefits would be something like extra private message capability, discounts in the marketplace or possibly with other online marketplaces, access to a 'members only' area of the forums.

What other benefits would users find worth while?

Maybe send the hookers by once a week instead of once a month. I also wouldn't mind a gas card for the Hummer you loaned me.:D
