I am at my local barbox tourney. It's just a $5 entry mostly bangers.
There's this kid there, probably one of the worst players.
I have been trying to sell him a cue for months but he never has money and plays off the wall.
Last night I see he has a cue he is playing with.
I say oh I see you got a cue.
He says "No my roommate is letting me use this one". He then shows me the cue for a better look.
Now I do know his roommate a little better so I ask him are you sure he said you could use it.
He says "Yeah it was standing in the corner of the bathroom, I ask him if it was cool and he said no problem".
Now mind you the kid has no case just cue and and he is a little bummed because the shaft doesn't match. I think it was from a Meucci.
But the standing in the bathroom corner butt was a Palmer Model J. :yeah::shocked2::shocked
Rackem thinks he may be trying to work a trade. :)

yea, it might not be the best thing for business to publicly admit trying to "leverage" a cue from some unknowing "kid".

At least offer something close to the value of it. Don't just rob the guy of it. If you're honest and say "I think this is actually a nice, rare, collectible cue... and I'd like to offer you XXX for it" then the other guy has the choice of taking your offer on the spot (which he probably will since it'll be much more than he thought it was worth) or researching it a little (in which case he might still sell to you for a bit cheap since you tuned him in).
 
How much is it worth?

Before, you guys pass judgment let's remember that we are talking as far as I know Butt only no shaft.
I only took a brief look but it was not in the best condition. Would need refinish.
Remember it has been standing in the corner of his bathroom with no case for who knows how long. Don't even know how straight the butt is.
Don't know if it is a Szamboti blank or not. How do I tell? Just by sharpness or would veneers be a certain color?
I also do not know how it was obtained, legally or not. Or inherited.
Once I can determine some of those answers, I will be able to determine what to offer.
Does anyone have any idea what a Model J toilet plunger handle goes for? :grin:

I agree with the others that I hope the person with the Palmer gets a fair deal, I hate seeing someone being taken advantaged of.

FWIW, I don't think it should be a factor whether this cue was given to him, or what not.

As long as he is happy with the trade, and you are not totally gouging him, I see no problem coming out ahead on the deal. If a young guy was selling a Scruggs sneaky for $100, would everyone offer to pay $500 because the kid didnt know what he had? I doubt it. Dont sweat it Jeff, make a good trade, and come out on top.

Wasn't there some mega thread a year or so ago about a hypothetical story of the "cue expert" who is called out to appraise an old widow's late husband's cues and what he should do if he discovers a Bushka or something like that.

If I remember right that thread got pretty long with people's opinions as to what they thought the "right" thing to do is.
 
offer the guy 50 out right and see what happens. make up some story about how you'd like to get it to replace one your dad had that you broke learning to play or something. make it sappy and offer the cash in small bills
