You should get a ... ?

i was referring to brand NEW and DIRECTLY from the cue-maker inside 12 months ....

I have very limited experience ordering directly from cue makers but I did order my Lambros cue directly from Mike Lambros late 2008 (wrapless and I chose the wood combo) and it was finished EXACTLY in time he promised ... WAY inside 12 months. This was my experience with Mike Lambros.

ok guys,

your buddy comes up to you and asks " what cue should i buy ? "

Criteria being:

1 It is not a "production" cue
2 You CAN get it within 12 months
3 It is under $2,500.-
4 You have tried more than 6 cues yourself

what would you suggest ?

let's have a top 3 suggestion list ...

Mine would be ( in no particular order )

Mike Cochran
Cash Cues
Gina Cue

Geez , there are a ton of builders that could fill that bill.

My number criteria is always , build local if at all possible. There is absolutely NO substitute for hands on , face to face when dealing with anything truly custom. Of course everyone had there own ideas of 'custom' as well but that's one of mine.

And I have travelled cross country to do that too. People will pay 2,3,5 grand on a custom cue and not a measly 200 for a flight to meet the guy and see it in person. Every time I read about someone unhappy when they open the package I think the same thing.

Crazy.

Okay, I'll say it, since we're three pages in and no one has recommended them...I'm very happy with my new Carolina Custom, and have liked all of them that I've hit with. Got mine from design to delivery in just over 4 months, and was in touch with them throughout the process. It's flawless and plays as good or better than my GEM, Schon, Joss or any cue I've ever owned or tried. I'm not sure how you'd go about spending $2500 on a CC, but I'm sure they could work with you to find a way...

By the way, I think the guy who started this thread has owned and sold as many or more cues than any three of us responding combined and I'd think he'd be much more qualified to answer his own question (?)...

If he really was my friend I'd tell him if HE didn't know what he wanted to save his money. He wasn't ready for nice cue. If he was a half-ass friend I'd try to beat him out of the $2500. Johnnyt

My advice would be that he try a Dave Ward cue from B&D Custom Cues.
Why? Because B&D cues satisfy all the wants and needs of a custom cue.
1. Competive pricing (better than many as a matter-of-fact).
2. Easily works with your design preferences.
3. Excellent workmanship.
4. LD shafts available.
5. Very reasonable build times.
Dave built "Old School" for me almost a year ago and so far it's one of the best playing cues I've ever owned, and that's saying something because I used to build cues myself. :)

The used market right now is a buyers market and for 2500 i wouldnt be surprised if you could score a good southwest, a super sweet titlist conversion, a great mottey/scruggs/gina. Even a Tascarella or something similar. I think used is the way to go.

Very personal question.

For me it would be

Mikkelson snooker cue.

Paul Fannelli super fancy butterfly point masterpiece (the guy went and died before he could custom build me one.)

What i find is amusing is that this thread is well over a year old and is now starting to get responses. That $2500 has come and gone along time ago.

I think this is a loaded question.
There is so much (as I have learned) that goes into choosing a new cue that the criteria should probably be expanded.
