Your best playing cues

Nice case

My first Schuler. I guess I should take it out of retirement, but since Ray passed away, I've been trying to keep it out of harms way. I don't do this because thinking it will ever become collectible. I've done this because it's a special cue to me that I've damaged in the bars too many times than it deserves.

Hey Cornerman,

Fred thats a pretty nice looking custom cue case you have a picture of.. Is that your cue case?? What kind of case is that? Who custom made that case.. It's nice..

Well Scott,,, those are all very nice cues. Everyone. Your James Ingram if old enough, if from back in the mid 80s,, Gus Szamboti was making and supplying James with the blanks... Just like and no different than Burton Spain and Gus supplying George Balabuska with blanks,,,, Gus was supplying James Ingram with 4point blanks. What year is your James Ingram cue. Scott all great cues... They should play well.. Are you my friend Scott from GA? I knew a Scott who has a very similar collection of great cues. Scott this is your collection isn't it? This has to be my buddy Scott,,, who else has a idential collection named Scott.... Hi Scott,,, It's Mike.. I knew these cues,,, you sent me a picture...lol...
Yup, it's me, Mike!! Welcome to AzBilliards. It can be a wild and woolly place. :D

I sent you the pictures of these cues and when I make it down to your home place, I'll bring them for you to try and give me your opinion. Deal?

My Ingram is made from a Hercek/Spain blank and was made for David Matlock. It has a very unique hit that is really hard to describe. I hear it is the way that Jim attaches his ferrule to the shaft. Joel has seen the cue and verified it. It's a keeper!

Take care, Mike. And, keep practicing for the tour.

Your buddy,

The picture doesn't due the case justice. It was made by Jack Justice in it is beautiful.

Best cue I've ever shot with was a bocote zylr-59". It just played easy, very solid.

Close second is my current Skip Weston.

I aspire to try a Hercek and Searing someday (lotto would help here).

On my tally I did I gave 2 pts. for a 1st place vote
& 1 pt for a 2nd place vote. Nobody picked Searing
as the best!!

I really like the Schuler I'm using now. Of all the cues I've tried, I'd like a chance to try my Schuler, the DZ I used to have, and the Capone I once tried side-by-side. I'm also dying to try a Southwest, Searing, Bender, and especially Zylr.

Man...I have owned what seems to be 200 cues in my life in search for that "hit" when all the time I have had the cue. Its a Star Cue Sneaky Pete made by Abe Rich <possibly the oldest cuemaker on the planet> my dad bought for me in 1979 for $55. Years later I had Dennis Searing make me a shaft and the rest is history. Although I had a James White that was incredible until a friend told me he would kill himself if I didnt sell it to him, lol. Played with a Gina for a year or so that was super but none of them come close to the Szamboti I lost in Hurricane Andrew...sigh!!
If it is the same Star cue out of Miami, I met Abe back in the 70's, really nice guy. He had a small shop back then. I have not seen him since tho. It's good to hear he's still alive and still making cues. :D

Cue Hits

I have loved the hit on all of the 4 Richard Blacks I have owned. I feel like they give a lot of response and feel. If you have not tried one, I recommend it highly. I am certain you would become a believer. His low-end cues hit just as great as the fancy ones, so you can get a world class hit for a reasonable price.

Plus: I love the hit on Black Boar cues. I did not have the money to buy one that I shot with back in 1994, but it was such a match for me, that I did not miss a single shot with that cue (and I played several matches). It just had the stiffness that worked well with the way I aim and shoot, I guess. I am still trying to get a BB. But will never give up my RB. (Until they pry it out of my cold, dead hands!) Haha!

May I ask, what is a balabarstick?

There are basically three things that seem to determine how a cue will hit; the shaft taper, the joint type, and the wood the forearm is made out of.

I like stiff shafts and flat faced joints. Tulipwood seems to have a feel that no other wood can duplicate.

My favorites are consistently Cognoscentis and Benders, but the best feeling cue I have ever hit with was a Keith Tulipwood fairly plain 6 pointer, owned by a man who stopped through Chicago one week, oddly enough name, Keith.

Wonderlan, I saw that cue, or another one like it when Joey swung by the Chicago Billiard Cafe with it. I know what you mean.

Best hitting cue

1 - Skip Weston, cocobolo into curly maple, 3/8 x 10 faux ivory joint, LBM ferrules with water buffalo tips.

2 - Skip Weston, ebony into birdseye, 5/16 x 14 piloted stainless steel joint, LBM ferrules, hard triangle tips.

3 - Omega DPK sneaky pete (#2), 3/8 x 11 linen pheolic joint, can't remember the ferrule material, french triumph tip.

I have a few Cues in my closet, they all get played with on a bi weekly basis. All hit well, when one become a Dog for me, I dump it. Got no Dogs at present. ;)

Best hitting cue

I've always loved maple forearm Southwest cues, but my new favorite has to be Dennis Searing's cues. His short piloted steel jointed cues are the best out there by far.

1. A early 90s satin SW. It was freakishly good, but unfortunately i dont' own it.
2. My bacote/purple heart 2000 Coker. Point work's a little off, but the cue hits great.
3. Mike Capone - 6 pts up and down. Ebony with purpleheart points.
4. My first cue, a beatup two piece house cue. It was cheap, it had bad wood, but it played well for me.

1.Skip Weston, Bloodwood and Maple Hoppe Style, Ivory Joint
2. Mike Capone, Cocobolo and Maple Hoppe Style, Ivory Joint
3. Paul Dayton, Ebony and Bloodwood, Ivory Joint
4. Last but not least. I am hoping that my new Skip Weston, Brazilian Rosewood Titleist copy that I just bought on here is going to be the best of all. Won't have it till Thursday but I can't wait!!!
