Why so many
Good question..
There is no smart reply here. I will agree as so so many that it's not the cue it's the player, no doubt...
So why, well the simple answer is why not. I look at it like this, if I'm not under any real pressure of having to know the feel and play of my cue because of being as perfect as possible for high dollar action or big competioin why not try the field for a while and see if there really is a difference.
So over the past maybe 5 years I did just that. Now for the big question.... Did I find anything that's worth talking about..
So here's my 2 cents
Tip : I can tell you first that the tip is 70 percent of the hit as in initial impact feel. I prefer triangle tips, cheap and consistent. They allow you to feel the cue, layered tips tend to remove of the tonal hit of the cue.
Ferrule: Ivory is just great, stays clean but is a bit heavy on the ball. Can tend to throw the ball some but there just cool. The tenon design can produce a great ping tone.
Shafts: Dense heavy woods, straight grain no spots, parabolic like taper 12.9mm. Higher pitched tone
Pin: Brass produces a great tone
Joint material: ivory Is my personal preference, I think Tascarella makes the best piloted fit.
Overall weight: 19 ounces even
Forearm: Sharp points are great just because they show the talent and quality of the cue maker
Wrap: Smooth leather, Gina, Tascarella, Schick and Prewitt are really good. 2nd choice older Tads
Butt Cap: not really that important.
Overall, again this is just my opinion solely based on playability.. Ranked in order:
Schick
Tascarella
Prewitt
Tad (big pin)
