your opinion on gambling ethics

When money is involved, how the f can it be a friendly game?
I don`t care how rich you are - No one likes loosing money.
Infact i think one of the reasons pool is such a small sport, despite how many people who say they like to play pool, it is the gambling aspect and the kinds of people drawn to that "world" that drives regular people away.
Oh and please don`t bring up poker - It`s a poor argument, easily defeated.
 
IMO, you should be happy you got the chance to break even. There are no ethics in gambling. If they wanted to quit after the first match, it is what it is. If you're not prepared to lose, DON'T bet...

I agree. In fact I believe this was the argument used in court cases to end police busting people for "gambling" at pool.

Part of the argument was that if pool tournaments were legal, you could describe playing someone for $5 a game was no different than a two person "tournament" with a $5 entry fee.

And yes, even fighting Mike Tyson is not a totally predictable event...he might be disqualified!

I will ONLY gamble with someone if it's a friendly game. Just because you don't like losing money doesn't mean you can't be friendly while doing it.

I have a rule that I stick by. If I'm not willing to buy you a drink after winning/losing to you, I won't play you for money.

How would you feel? I'm done with these 2! BTW, I know player b well, not so much with player a

Your title....gambling & ethics....since they are complete opposites, I don't know what else there is to say.

If you don't like his action don't bet with him next time.

There was no rule broken imo. Lack of gamble.. maybe

Would you have been happy if he quit after winning the next set? Not likely. Quitting ahead is more of a issue than quitting even. He could have told you it was his last set and given you a chance to raise the bet some. --> this would have been good on his part.

Communication is the only way to eliminate problems.

If you want to play all night you should probably mention that at the start.

I think we all have stories like this, it happens. I practicing one day and had someone had come ask to play some $5 one pocket. Not a one pocket player, play decent but not my first pick. He won the first, me the second, in the middle of the third he tells me he has to play league!!!! So my other friend shows up while he is playing his league match and we start some 14.1 He returned and I payed him $5 to my dismay I became the nit! LMFAO

It drives me nuts that you can't quit whenever you want. I am playing you for $X per set. If I win the first 2 sets, you owe me that much right then. There is no "$X per set if you win but only assuming you are willing to stay until I decide to quit"

If I am playing at a cash poker game and win a few big pots, I can get up without it being any issue.

Some unwritten rules are crap.

Hear hear! If I am playing for cash per rack, I expect all my losses are gone for good, and all my winnings are mine for good.

If I stay and lose it back, or I run for the hills with the loot, that's not up to you.

Don't bet if you're not fine parting with your money.

This bugs me. Some guys tried calling me bad action at this past year's state tournament.

This guy comes in and wants to play someone (seriously anybody) for money? I was with a couple of master/advanced level players and no one would play him. Finally, i said fine.

I beat him the first set and felt like he was laying low. I told him i didn't feel like playing all night and i was quitting after the 2nd set no matter what. I thought this would get him to open up a little bit. He didn't get much of a chance the 2nd set and I quit just like i said. I actually thought it would have been poor to keep playing him after saying i was done and the way i shot the 2nd set.

Shortly after, the master level players that wouldn't play tried telling me i was bad action because of it. Get out of here.

Bullshit, you gave him a shot at his money. If he wanted to walk away winner he would have to jack the bet! I see no problem with that.

I try to negotiate with people all the time, but they usually want cheap sets. I can't even get totally interested for under $100 a set. So when they get smart about it I tell them I will stay all night, but they gotta post up some real money. Most of the time they don't even have $200 on them so what is the point. Rather spend my free time with family.
 
I'm always fascinated when I read these threads.

If nothing was pre-arranged, I or my opponent can leave at any time.

If you want to try to complicate things with "ethics" or unwritten rules to justify your own frustration, that's your own problem. You should be frustrated at yourself for not taking the 5 seconds to say, "How about we play a minimum of 3 sets?".
