Your other life.

I've had a few past lives.
Back in the late two-thousands I had several stents put in a right circumflex graft (heart).
Back in the late nineties I shot a 69 on a golf course.
Back in the late eighties I built and owned the World's quickest, and fastest 1964 all Pontiac, GTO. Quickest time: 9.50 in the quarter mile on race gas. It ran an 8.90 on a bottle of Nitrous, once. It was also a many time custom car show winner.
Back in the late seventies and early eighties I was an IHMSA Missouri state champion (largebore handguns), and Arkansas C class champion IPSC (combat shooting).
In the early seventies I built and showed custom motorcycles.
In the late sixties I was a pilot.
In the early sixties I had long hair and smoked pot.
In the fifties I played baseball and chased girls.
In the late forties I was shittin' yellow.
This may be more information than you wanted, but what the hell.

Good thread John. As AZB keeps growing, there's a lower percentage of people who know anything about us.

Career: Development of Automation & Robotic manufacturing systems for one of the largest Contract Manufacturers in the world (> $17B USD). I've been building and developing automated and robotic systems for 20 years as a career (not a hobby, pastime or study). My career has allowed me to travel the world and work on some of the coolest shit out there. And it's pretty much guaranteed that my systems have put together at least one thing in any AZB'ers household.

Hobby: I come from a musical and artistic family. In this case, the apple fell far enough from the tree that I never pursued any of it, but I still have some gene that hold some kind of talent. At least, that's what my mommy saz.

I've attached a photo of ... what really is a hobby. If it ever became competitive, I'd quit. And wouldn't you know, it got competitive. That's me two years ago winning a Live Band Karaoke competition. I've won a few of the non-live version. It almost gave me that feeling of being in that rock band that I thought I might do when I was a teenager.

I write. Many of you might not know that I've written the Cue Makers Corner article for InsidePool Magazine since 2003 (hence - Cornerman). But, I've written a lot. And my parents are both writers and musicians. How I ever became an engineer is mind boggling as I grew up pretty artsy and creative. But I think it's my engineering and artistic background combined with the fact that I actually write that makes writing the Cue Makers Corner article make some sense.

Some of my writing is "published," but I've never really pursued truly publishing my personal writing. If I do, it would be a book of poetry. And no, it's no Dick and Jane stuff.

And of course, I'm the very proud parent of two wonderful ladies ages 22 & 19. They are my whole life.

I ride a Harley Davidson Sportster and I like long romantic walks on the west coast of Florida

I was born early in WW II.

Became an AJBC Certified Bowling Instructor in 1958 and had plans to be a professional bowler until 1971. Alcohol and chasing women put an end to that.

Worked in UAW factories during the '60s, early '70s.

Organized one of the early bar leagues in 1966; won my first singles title in 1970.

Also smoked a lot of the wacky (what one of my pool sponsors called it).

Twenty-five years out of high school, I began to read again, and became a vegetarian in 1975; began gardening.

Entered college in 1979.

Began writing books in 1987; eight to date, three in print.

Retired from pool that year, took it up again two years later.

Became a BCA Certified Instructor in '93, after my best year on the felt.

Also managed to father three children and do some classroom teaching. My studies included Philosophy, Religion, History, Psychology, Biology, Paleontology, Cultural Anthropology and Nutrition.

I've lived on all four "coasts", in Ohio, California, Maryland and Florida, plus many years in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

I love this! I assume the Gulf is counted in Florida, and all the Great Lakes are counted in Ohio?

John..you're kidding right??? That's you in that picture?????? You were actually good looking???? Good golly!!! Hahhah

Before I came to China and got into the furniture biz, I was a cop in Singapore for two and a half years. It was part of a compulsory national service stint that all fit man in Singapore needs to serve. Most go into the Army but I got lucky and was posted to the Police Force. Real fun.

Come to think of it the force made me play more pool. I remember having those bar boxes in the HQ's leisure room and a couple of us knew a secret mechanism to pull to get all the balls out so we get to play for free. Good times..

Good thread John, thanks for making me feel old.

In my other life im a pool hustler i disguise myself as a truck driver and keep a low profile by playing really cheap sets. My other life u may see me walking down the road with a cue on my back i may look like i need a shower an a haircut, you will probably halve to explain some of the rules to 9 ball to me if we play most of the guys never remember my name they just call me lucky. In real life i have a nice house drive a brand new Camaro and have a studio with a diamond table where i practice my ass off. My wife she could do better but she thinks it sexy that i have a secret life as a pool hustler. The secret to my success if u cant win .... lose.

I wish I had self accomplishments but really never finished anything
I started.I was a goalie for years and was a prospect for the Winnipeg
Jets and 2 of my buddys made it pro.
Mike Ricci was the one guy and Chris Draper is the other who will
probably retire with the Red Wings.
Its been my biggest regret in life and was on the doorstep of fame and
fortune and totally f--ked it up.
Its haunted me for my entire life since.Hockey was the most enjoyment
I've ever had and truly miss it.
Once hockey was over,I never gave a sh-t about nothing and had
many run-ins with the law.
Spent a few years in a place I never wanted to re-visit.
I now have a family and drive a cab.I go through trials and tribulations
everyday of my life to stay on the straight and narrow.
The only thing I do know for a fact is,if your kids can't make you
a better person, nothing will!!!If it wasn't for them and God looking out
for me,I should of been dead many, many times.
Great thread by the way,I never really like talking to serious
but this is nice.Takecare

good to see there is a couple of drummers on AZ. I had a past life as a drummer in a heavy metal band in the early 90's, I still play alittle but not in a band...also used to build VWs (mainly sciroccos) for road course racing. and got pretty good at that.

when I was a teenager (sp) I did the drum corps thing and BMX freestlye boy were those the days.

then started doing remoddeling for almost 15 years till the bottom fell out... started playing pool at 27 (in 1999) wish I would have started when I was a teen. game has gone down the toilet in the past year. and it sucks, but what can you do.?

Nothing special for me. I served 20 years in the Air Force as a weather forecaster. Retired 4 years ago. I have been a Security Analyst for the Air Force ever since. One year as a gov civilian and the last 3 as a contractor.

Fathered 4 kids(24, 22, 7 & 4), and have a 3yr old grandson.

Carried a 210-220 bowling average since about 1991. Recently stopped bowling due to a torn disc in my back. Was a youth bowling coach for a few years. My 2 older boys both have over 200 averages.

Other than that, I keep to myself and work on my hot rods and offroad trucks, hunt when I can, and continue to be daddy and hubby

My life hasn't been that exciting or at least not as compared to some of the post I have read. I was a delinquent in my early teen years, not from my up-bringing but from my wild side. There weren't many things that I was afraid to try.

My brother survived two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Marine. I didn't want to join while he was in. It would have killed my mother with worry that two of her sons were in Vietnam at the same time. When my brother got out of the Corps, I joined and went marching through the rice paddies of Vietnam as a grunt. It wasn't pretty but I survived despite my ignorance, youth and experiences. I gave up on weed while I was there. I got scared and paranoid so bad one time, I just knew if I was going to go, I would take a lot of the enemy with me, so I gave up on the weed and tried to figure out a way to survive. I squeaked by and made it back home with body in tact, ekking out a living running a Carroll printing press and shift, until I got into sales. Went to college for a couple of years but found working full time and going to college full time a little brutal so I opted to give the job my best effort. Good move for me. Got lucky, eventually started my own business in 1986 and am still rolling today.

Fished and hunted quite a lot after the Marine Corps, lived in Mississippi with my wife and soon to be born son.

Somehow, early on, before it became popular for the business forms industry, I became enamored with graphic design and typesetting and hired a computer guy to work for me while I did sales. He taught me how to typeset and design business forms and my company was the first company in Louisiana to typeset digitally. Customers back then were used to getting proofs back in two weeks and I promised two days and could do it in one day if needed. That solidified my relationships with my customer base for many years until others caught up with me. I still typeset and sell today. It's been fun, profitable and interesting for me and continues to be so even now.

Kept my love for pool away from my son for his development years and he earned a college degree and went on to become an IT manager for a large insurance company and is doing really well for himself. I don't have to worrry about him borrowing money from dad. It might be the other way around if the market gets any worse than it already is. :D

My wife and I have been married 38 years. I'm a one-woman kind of guy. :) She's been good for me and an angel to put up with my obsessive behavior with pool. You already know about my penchant for doing commentary and competing at pool. I enjoy writing about pool and other things. I've been writing an auto-biography which is more a novel about my family's history which actually began in 1900 during the Great Hurricaine of 1900. It's almost finished now after several years of writing. I plan to print an original hard back book for my son, just for posterity. It's really just a recounting of my life and that of my family. I think I write not for the benefit of others or the ego-stroking that might come my way but because it just feels good to sometimes let the words fly from my fingertips. Than God for those two years of typing. :D I seldom ever make drafts of anything that I write. Writing isn't a labor just like my career in printing has not been a labor. It is something I do with relish and enjoy each and every minute. Unfortunately, I never developed the discipline for writing professionally. That might be a regret but maybe not.

Have to get to the pool room to visit with my son who is finally deciding to learn how to play pool or I would just keep writing for another 20 minutes. :D

Nothing that great here, really kind of boring compared to many here.

Played lots of sports through high school, should have gone to Nam, but the year I came up for the draft, they had the lottery so I didn't get drafted, nor did I enlist.

Surfed a lot, snow skiied, motorcycle riding were a few of my hobbies when younger

Went to college and thought chasing skirts was more important than getting an education so I quit school.

Drank and drugged for many many years, then had enough and decided to get sober, been doing the sober thing for quite a few years now. Should have been dead many many years ago.

Got married, and got a job that I stayed at for 34 years in the chemical industry, then went to work for another chemical manufacturer after getting the boss from hell and have been here for last 4.5 years (it turned out to be a great move).
Not married to the first wife now, thank God, as she was a piece of work, and still is let me tell you!!

Have a son that is married, have one grand daughter, with twin boys on the way next month.

It's great to be alive. Life is good.

Great thread! What a diversity of people we have on here, with one common interest. We all want to make a ball in a hole!

Wow, some pretty cool people on this forum. We all got to the AZB via a different route, but now that we're here, we are just pool enthusiasts. In other words, we're pretty much all the same here. A bit like at the poolroom, where we're all just shooters.

I'm thinking, though, that the initial poster, a high diver, might just be the coolest of the cool on AZB. JB Cases, the only times I've ever gone into a serious dive, I was served watered down drinks.

I think the theme of this thread is that it's not how you arrive at pool enthusiasm, as long as you get there.
