Youtube matches with the best commentary

Toby Sweet vs Steve Mizerak
Grady is in rare form.

As always, the classic Keith McCready vs Gary Bushwacker Nolan comes to mind
That one is not for the kids!

Just curious what some of the AZ favorites are as far as commentary go.

This is my favorite:

Maryland Straight pool, commentary by George Hammerbacher, close friend of mine and was my team Captain for BCA 8 ball while I lived in MD.

Hey! that's cool to see George get the credit he deserves. I was in the booth for a few matches with him,
just not in the MD event. He's such a nice guy and has some colorful turns of phrase.
When someone scratches "uh oh, looks like he misplaced his mineral."
When someone smacks their cue on the rail "I think I hear the cry of love..."
When they're taking a long time on a simple shot "This guy is slower than erosion."

It's a shame, in the MD event, the commentators were literally facing a wall.
They not only rely on the same stream as everyone else, they can't get eyes or ears on anything
happening outside the frame. And their stream is actually running on a small window that takes
up only part of the monitor (the rest of the real estate is used for the scoring and streaming app).
Makes it tough for the booth to make accurate calls sometimes.

Yeah George is a real character and has a HUGE wealth of pool knowledge. He is definitely not someone I would have wanted to play straight pool with 20 or 30 years ago when some greenbacks were on the line... for sure!

I had the pleasure of being in the booth with him at an APT event in Catonsville (VIP I think... closed unfortunately). I wonder if I got ahold of Ozzy whether he might have the video from that match... I would love to have a copy!

This one is a classic: Reyes vs. Kunihko with Grady and Billy in the booth. Great commentary and an awesome display by Reyes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex9VAjvxZ98

Another great one is Shane Van Boening vs. Jayson Shaw at Turning Stone
Danny Dilberto and (a voice I recognize but can't name) doing the commentary.

It's a great match, particularly if you like safety play. Great changes in momentum and the lead. Unfortunately the video doesn't begin until they're a few racks in.

IMO, when Grady and Billy worked together they were the best. I sometimes thought they were going to come to blows.

They often disagreed and told why.

When Grady passed, the G/B magic was forever gone IMO. Billy Incardona is still my favorite, but he gets matched up with others and the magic just isn't there.

JoeyA does a great job, and he is like Billy now, and teams up with different folks. While everytime he is in the booth, he is a little better. He continues to improve. IMO, that might be because he is getting a little more relaxed, and it comes across less struggled. I wish JoeyA would get his Grady or Robin or whatever you want to call his permanent sidekick, he really has the potential.

I sure miss old Grady. :crying:

He truly loved the game (one pocket), and it showed everytime he strapped on the mic.

There is a Video that I believe was from the Johnny Archer Classic that I found hilarious. I can't remember who was playing but all I remember was Johnny Archer was doing some commentary with some other guy and he was very close to drunk and very funny. May not be the best pool commentary "strategy-wise" but damn was it entertaining! I'll update if I can find the Video.

His cohort in that one was Shannon Daulton. I think (although it's just specuation) that they've known each other so long and so well, that they can argue like brother/sister children...especially when they've both had a few. As I recall, Alvin was the host commentator but I think he had the good sense to step out when Johnny and Shannon started going at it.

Sound like Jerry Forsyth to me lol

Yes exactly! Here is the Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZBjVRT_5Vw

Very honest and down to earth talk between the two that goes beyond pool. Very entertaining, and plus always fun to watch SVB play.

I agree they were entertaining for a while. But after a bit I'd really rather they focused their comments on the match. It was like going to a match and trying to watch it while two drunks argued in the seats right behind you.

I agree. They definitely had a chemistry that worked.

There was an old Accu-stats match with Nick Varner playing somebody. (I don't remember who right off.) But Billy was talking about how tough Nick was. Billy said that he was practicing with Nick, playing cheap, and Nick beat him 15 games in a row. Billy said that he couldn't ever remember being beaten 15 games in a row. Grady joked that he had probably beaten Billy 15 games in a row. Billy says, "Grady, if you ever beat me 15 games in a row, I would slash my wrists." Grady responds, "Why provide me with incentive?"

Their knowledge of the game mixed with those little verbal jousts made for great commentary.

Thanks, sure I haven't seen some of these matches. I personally think commentary
is an important aspect of a match and when it's done right adds a lot.

I was in the back of the booth for that one, it was Rodney Morris and Shannon Daulton. There were pretty buzzed at the start and just gained momentum. One of the funniest commentaries I have ever heard.

I just watched the old legends of 1p match, Efren vs. Buddy Hall, and I feel like
Weenie Beenie deserves an honorable mention. He is like that super nice mild-mannered
older guy, a mr. rogers type, says absolutely nothing negative, and keeps laser focused
on the match, not too many stories or digressions.
Compliments the players and the fans and the sponsors.

In short, pure class.

He called many shots absolutely perfectly, seemingly spotting
the move even before the players did.

Scott Smith, who we usually see as the TD and never in the booth,
joined him as sort of a sidekick and let Bill do all the driving.
But he was very smooth about it and added a sort of professional vibe.

The style of these two could not be more different from most modern commentators,
and it was a nice change of pace.
