Isn’t pool supposed to be dead?

Walked in to this place near my apartment 10pm Tuesday night, not one table available. I used to work at a pool hall when I was younger (back in the 90s). We had about the same number of tables as this place, ~20-25. We were never this busy on a week night. Is it booze? We didn’t serve alcohol. 🤷‍♂️ Was told it was league night so about half the tables were reserved for them. Came in last night also and it was the same.View attachment 887203
I've been seeing this in MSP also (granted we're getting into slushy, gross season so people don't want to be outside yet).
It's nice to see the halls filling up.

“Less Lucky” Version of 10 Ball?

Ten ball is fine. What the op describes is call shot/ call safe which is the most boring form of pool EVER. Roll are part of the game, deal with it. Personally i like WPA rules with one exception: called early 10b's should be allowed. Adds spice, not a fan of 10b last at all.
Agree with all this except early 10s. It's not a hill i'll die on, but i like to keep it entirely separate from 9b.

I used to think the 10 on the break should count until this last Predator event with the Aerorack... Jesus. I think Shane made 10-12 of them on the break in the matches i've watched...
Maybe feedback from that will convince Predator to make a template (because we all know how much they hate using non-Cat products lol).

Isn’t pool supposed to be dead?

I don't know how it is in the US but where I live (in Quebec), it's the gambling lottery machine that keeps the pool hall alive and pays the bill. The pool is only because the owner likes pool. We get between 20 and 30 players 3x a week to play in tournaments but the money the lottery machine are bringing is so much more than what pool players are bringing on a busy night.
Even Skinny Bob's here is like that. They may actually have more machines than pool tables.

My team probably spends $150 to $200 on food and drinks per league night.

For a slow night like a Wednesday, that's not too bad.
My league teams are similar, but we are outside of the norm. It's a running joke when I have friends visit me at league that I tell them to look for the team with the most buckets. I'd also say that in general APA spends more than BCA.

Well that's Home Field advantage. 😉
My changing the rubber in the rails, while The King did advise me was not perfect. Not sure why but probably in the prep before gluing the rubber but two spots have uh come loose near the side pocket. Loose rubber can make a rebounding ball go astray. I learned that long ago on a tournament table on the Hilltop in Redding. Where Rackers had grabbed the foot rail when going down to retrieve the balls had provided two loose spots on the foot rail. A ball that would normally open up would shorten and vic versa. Another reason to check the rebound angles when warming up. I would have to suppress the giggle when a player with shooting skills that hadn't noticed played a shape shot that went around the table. The look on their face when the cue ball hit that rail and then acted funny. Well funny if he was playing me. 🤷‍♂️
One of these days I will fixit....of course I have been saying that for years. 🤷‍♂️ As a proper host I point it out to my guests before we play.
Edit: Ooops I just remembered it was Roger Petit that taught me how to tension the rubber when gluing it. Shirley The King would have told me the same though.
It's Good To Be The King........and it's good To Know The King 👍
