I've Been Shanghaied

So, here's the thing (other than being strong armed by Dustin): I try and get away at least once or twice a year and blow my "send a boy to pool camp" dough. Gail is very forgiving in this regard and has even encouraged me to go to events.

And the sad fact of the matter is that, after two decades of support, the Derby has pulled the rug out on the 1pocket players and put in the goofiest rules imaginable that I (and several others that I know of) refuse to support. Will they go on -- no doubt but not on my dime. Soooo, I need to find something else to do with my discretionary finds.

70 degree weather in November in Florida, cheap airfare and car rentals, shoot some 1pocket, sweat some 14.1, eat some seafood, (there may have even been some discussion of strip clubs :-o), so if nothing else it'll be something different.

I wish the best to all headed to the DCC, I shan't be there. Thanks to Miller for strong arming me into this. The fact of the matter is that I won't be here forever to do stuff like this so I'm good to go now.

Lou Figueroa

Well there are dates and there are discretionary finds. I like that term and wish I had thought to describe my pool winnings that way when I was married!

St. Louis Louie vs. Archer 1990

For the most part I won’t argue about the amount of players that can shoot as well as anyone ever has… and why. I tend to agree. But I’d argue overall that the past generation of players knew how to move around the table a little better because there were no jump cues and because of rule changes. Some of these young kids shoot so damn well though it’s hard to exploit this even if it is a weakness.
On board with this to a point. I reckon that guys like Hall, Rempe, Appleton and Souquet had a cue ball that was comparable to today's best. Still, the general standard in pattern play has definitely risen quite a bit since the days of old.
Rule changes as in how the balls are racked which totally benefits the “illusion” of better pattern play, roll out, & and the advent of jump cues IMO make it very difficult to compare past generations. These rule changes changed the game… beyond incredible shot making and getting shape, strategy is not as a huge part of the game of 9 ball anymore. Can you out think your opponent and use your knowledge if even you have it, it’s not on display. Again this is why I can’t compare the generations.

Rule changes have made superstars out of some of today’s NBA players that would not have been in yesterday’s game and vice versa.

World Pool Championships 2025, July 21-26, Jeddah

Do they even like pool in Jeddah? Shaw's TV table match appeared to have a live audience of less than ten. Whether I am in attendance or not at a pool event, poor live fanfare drops the quality of any event in my eyes.

I think we owe the Saudis our gratitude for bringing money into our sport, but through one day, this championship seems less special, not more special, than the other majors.
I agree they need to do something to fill the stands. I wonder if they charge to get in. If they do, they need to axe that charge. If it's already free, do something else to entice fans.

SouthWest

If I was the original owner, I would want to get a service for my product from who made it or at least authorized by the maker to serve the product.

When it comes to Southwest, I have a feeling that if someone else refinishes the cue, it’ll hurt its value.

If I’m the original owner than I don’t have the right to demand such a thing.

There should be a separate line for service.
A separate line for service would be nice. But the unfortunate reality is it's nearly impossible to find good help, particularly in jobs outside of an office setting. Skilled labor or even a good employee who shows up and is willing to learn... Good luck. And based on Bamacues's post above, Southwest is dealing with a lack of good help.

As far as refinishing goes, as long as the refinish work was done by a competent and and respected person or business, I wouldn't care one way or the other. Let's face it, if a cue has needed a refinish it's been played. And probably a lot. So we're already out of closet queen price territory. Any potential difference in resale price due to a non-Southwest refinish is going to get absorbed by that. I guess the way I look at it is if you have to ask if it's been refinished and/or by who, does it really matter? Of course, this is just my opinion and I'd never knock anyone for wanting the refinish done by Southwest. It's just not something I'd lose any sleep over.

So having a few cues build......should I take a loupe to it?

Don’t do it!!!
You do not want to see just how imperfect are all those nice perfect cues…

It like taking a picture and the cropping in and trying to enjoy it while realizing that it’s not in perfect focus, instead it should be printed and viewed from a sensible viewing distance.

Cues should be admired in hand at an arms distance under a pool table light.
Agree 100 percent.

I have some cues I would consider nice. I have never examined them with a loupe/magnifying glass. Im a player and they have all had heavy use, so there are going to be more imperfections in them with just the use of the cue eventually.
