Automatic Shot Clock

Pretty sweet idea. Like someone else mentioned, what if I hit a stop shot 3 railer? That would be an issue. What about breaking 8 ball or 10 ball and you stop the cueball dead but the other balls take a good while to come to a stop. And how bout between games when the cueball is just sitting there while the balls are being racked? Idk the answers but just stuff that comes to mind. Anyway, really cool implementation/concept!

Feels like a rule change is needed.

Winner breaks is fine, but should be capped to 5 break and runs from the start of the game.

So in the Biado example, the break would have automatically switched at 5-0.

With this approach, in a straight pool match, they should stop a run at 50 and switch players…

The statistics show that winner break and alternate breaks even out.
Sometimes we witness something like that, it doesn’t happen very often, just let it be.

I prefer winner breaks (and looser rack)

Testing Kicks and Banks on Diamond Brand Tables, and How to Adjust Aiming

Crazy stuff can happen, too.

A few weeks ago, I shot a seemingly simple 2-1 kick on a GC4 I play on regularly in a DC suburb. The shot was way off.

After my match was over, I practiced the same 2-1 bank and it was quite short. A very slight amount of running spin solved the issue.

Then I practiced the classic Corner 5 shot. I could not get the CB to go into the opposite pocket from where I shot hitting the third, second or first diamond. Didn’t matter the speed or spin.

Just a week earlier, the same table kicked just fine and I pocketed the Corner 5 shot consistently hitting the second diamond.

I’ve never played on a table that was so off from one week to the next!

First thing to check, is an AC/Heater register blowing on the table? Doors nearby? Unusual amount of foot traffic passing by or finding yourself next to a league table with people hanging over it and talking before and after every shot? Lots of hand powder or just a dirty table. Humidity can make a big difference particularly on a table with little care.

I would hate to say anything is impossible but a radical change in a week is almost certainly due to something besides the amount of wear. I would study the room. Sometimes a table near a wall or something else to direct air will have issues dealing the AC or heat. It may take a minute or two for the airflow to reach a table.

Most tables in a pool hall are subject to some of these things. One of my favorites was sunshine through a very lightly tinted window every evening. One entire long rail became a safety. It made matters far worse if you suckered somebody into looking directly into the sun. That could cost them a game or two!

Learning to read a room fast was a must for a traveler. Often local players overlook things that would benefit their game. Not likely to change in one week but one place I played had a lighting issue. Took me about a month to figure out that deal. After finding it once I check lights now.

Good Luck!

Moori Tip Discussion

Since this thread is showing a little life I'll point out that there is a lot of difference in leather, even from the same hide. When talking multiple different hides, there can be worlds of differences. Just for starters, it is common practice to salvage the hides from Winter kill animals and animals from other times of year found dead. Some of these hides can be very marginal, to be blunt, shouldn't have been salvaged! Then comes the tanning process. Many different ways to tan a hide using many different products. Using the brain to tan hides was once popular. Tanneries don't smell like rose gardens, strong chemicals and organic matter!

An animal's hide is all different thicknesses and textures too. Somebody in a one man operation or small shop tends to be far more picky about hide selection than a bulk operation. Trying to get more tips out of a hide gets you into marginal areas.

Moori was a one man shop in Japan. I believe the man died, maybe just sold out. Regardless, the moori tip of today is a far less quality controlled product than when it was from a one man shop.

Watched Seo/Zielinski vs Gorst/Hung. Great match with a lot of solid play both ways.

Seo and Zielinski are an interesting team. He can get really negative at the table, yet she is a picture of composure. I think her consistently cheerful demeanor at the table rubbed off on him a little, and it was nice to see. She seemed to bring out the best in him. Well played!

Howard goes undefeated to claim Q City 9-Ball Tour title at Mickey Milligan’s

Regional tours have a way of spotlighting more than just individual players competing in a relatively tight geographic area. They reveal a sort of competitive and collective ‘DNA,’ unique to a given area. You get a mixture of first-time players, returning but relatively new ones, a smattering of competitors who’ve traveled a bit to be there and the occasional guy or gal that’s been playing on the tour (or its predecessor) for years. It’s like a time-leaping snapshot of the area’s regional pool community with its long-time residents, regular visitors, and the occasional group that’s on-site for the first time. […]
