Nine on the Spot or One on the spot?

Hey guys just curious what is the difference between nine on the spot or the one on the spot. I know obviously it makes a difference when it comes to making a ball on the break I was just curious though as to why and how.

Let me know what you guys prefer.

Thanks

You can learn to live with either. I think Eurotour puts the nine on the spot, so hopefully a Eurotour player, perhaps Roy Steffensen, can offer some insight here as to how the adjustment is made.

I've seen the 9 on the spot for some ESPN pro telecast etc., but never really come across it in the local pool hall nor in any tournaments I've played in.

I could be wrong...again, but I believe the WPBA put the nine on the spot about five years ago. If so, maybe someone from that tour can jump in here. I believe it was to stop a few of them from making the nine in the side on most breaks. I also think they used the Sardo rack back then. Johnnyt

Johnnyt,

I can't remember which pro events I've seen it at but I think I've seen it with both the men and the women. However I do see them making the 1 or wing ball with regularity from this position especially once they get the break speed down.

This actually makes me wonder if it was to prevent sinking a ball on the break or to assist in doing so and therefore making it more exciting to the fans since it would increase the B&R chances. More break and runs also help to make the players performance look more impressive as well.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that it was done mostly in conjunction with the break box. It's purpose was to cause the player to break the balls up more which made it more fun for television. Again, I could be wrong but I KNOW I heard a broadcaster ( at some point in time) say something to this effect. I also believe they did that for the mosconi cup, in conjunction with the "3 balls down/ past the headstring" rule.

This is just my educated guess, I've been known to be wrong from time to time. lol

I've followed the WPBA for quite a while, and when the Sardo was first introduced, the one was racked on the spot. Players figured out quickly that a solid hit at medium speed usually yielded the one in the side or the corner ball, and CB control was easy.

Promoters recognized this, and wanted to take away some of the predictability. They moved the nine to the spot, but kept the Sardo. Players responded by hitting them a little softer, and hitting half the one, instead of a full hit. It yielded almost identical results, except that it's impossible to control the CB with the same consistency that a full hit affords.

Thank you. Now that I know my long term memory is intact I'll start working on my short term. Johnnyt

9 on the spot, and you can make the 1 in the side all the time with a cut break.

The new angle, vs. 1 on the spot, makes the side play much, much bigger.

I like the predator rules about the money ball going in the bottom corner pockets....Maybe they should make it any balls made in the bottom corner pockets don't count...
hmmmm.....

spot

The first time I saw the ladies put the nine on the spot was in Prescott, AZ when they had a tour stop there. They hadn't did it earlier in the tournament and I thought Steve Tipton made a mistake when I saw him do it then.

They are making the rules now too...? :grin-square:

I know that the International Tournament of Champions (woman) and the International Challenge of Champions (men) puts the 9 on the spot.
