What can we all do in Vegas to Help Edwin's family and Start a New Tradition

I don't know how to open this and at times I am not really sure what to say, so it may seem like i'm rambling (sorry for that). I know this world has lost a great person. I know many of us knew him and he was much more than a cue builder, much, much more. Now I am wondering what can we all do to help. I have read threads with people Like John Barton stepping up to the plate and telling folks he will not rest until we can do something. I can feel in my heart where he is coming from and I no we should all be in some way beside him to help. There are way to many people here for us to just sit around and do nothing. I know at time's some people in this industry have difference's about things. BUT this is a time when we all need to do something. I have grown up living my life with two main life rules. 1. Do on to others as you would have them do onto you and 2. Always do something to help rather than nothing. If anyone of you truly feel the way I do. Please help me out here. This year 2009 is going to be the first year we have a chance to virtually change the billiard community! How many people come to play every year? Thousands!! We will have so many people from so many different walks of life all in the same place just for one purpose and not to hit the slots. But to play a game that has consumed all of our lives. I am not asking for major sponsorships and I am not asking for handouts. I know we have the TAR guy's out there and this is the first thing that comes to mind. Challenge matches againt the pro's for donation's to a proprietay fund for Edwin. I know there are many other things we could do and I want to hear some ideas. I know we as a community can always come together as a family when we need to. Look what folks did for Alton Takata (CueCaps). All he ever did was be very humble and modest and a group of folks with large hearts got him off his island and to Valley Forge. If we can do something like that I know we can do something here. I am not looking for everyone to jump up and say "Let's start a Revolution" but why not. This is our game and we need to take care of our own, we can and I whole heartedly feel we can, RIGHT NOW!! Please if you have anything on your mind post it. If you have anything negative to say please take it else where, that's what NPR is for, lol. All I am saying is we are a family cut from different molds all brought together for one common purpose, and the purpose in my eyes is to play pool. But not just play, play with your family, play with your friends, play with folks you have never meet before and call them your friend afterwards. It's about the stories you hear and never believe, even if it really did happen. You know what I mean. It's the good times and the good people that keep us here and keep us smiling.

I am in for whatever I can do. Jamison Neu has said he will help so perhaps if you have a table he can do challenge matches or shows for donations when it's good.

I know it's hard to give up time at the show - maybe even a small poster with Edwin's picture and an explanation that he was murdered and leaves a widow and three children would help. I'd include a bio of Edwin for people to read.

Anito Kid, you are a brilliant writer, would you write something for this and help to design it? If so I will pay for the printing and delivery of these posters to whichever booths at the show will agree to display them. It's sad that Edwin was a cuemaker of such talent and is unknown to 99% of the people at the Vegas tournaments. It's also sad that he was fighting for a cause that doesn't affect those people's enjoyment of billiards so they may not care. BUT people are compassionate and some will care about the tragedy of a man cut down in the prime of his life who leaves a family behind.

The real answer to what we can do to keep Edwin's ideals alive is to work together, both internally and externally.

The history of American pool has been one of organizations and professional tours competing with, and, far too often, undermining each other. On far too many occasions, our game has been the real loser in the conflicts, which have stripped pro pool of some of the unity it needs to move forward.

As for world pool, we've made some progress but need to make more. BCA week provides the year's single best opportunity to interact with pool dignitaries of all nations. I have, over the years, met administrators, sponsors, and tournament directors of American, Asian and European pool.

To me, there is no greater moment of confluence in the world of pool than BCA Week, in which a) male and female pros and amateurs of Asia, Europe and America will compete, and b) people covering the entire landscape of pool will gather.

Reach out to those of your own nation but also to those of other nations in a spirit of understanding and mutuality of purpose regardng our sport and its future. I think Edwin would have appreciated that!

Maybe someone can put together a tribute T-shirt with 100% of proceeds going to Edwin's family. I know this would take some work to ensure the money is received and someone more familiar with shirts could get us a deal.

Look at the Indian Larry memorial shirt as an example.

Single color image of Edwin on front with a quote "if it is good for the players, then it is good for pool." with name and nickname to right below.

Back could be both pool organization logo and his cues logo in multicolor.

Not sure how much profit T-shirts raise, but this seems to be something folks would be willing to put some money up for who might not otherwise participate.
 
How many AZR's are going to Vegas?

Right now, I'm finishing a sneaky I will raffle here. All proceeds will go to Edwin's family. Two local AZ'rs have already bought spots ( 10 spots max, $35 a spot ). School opens in June down there and I plan to send the funds before that.

I will get everyone I play to sign a list. Then I will post the list on AZB. Professorqball has agreed to put the reults on his site, and if I move quick enough after Vegas in his Magazine.

I think the three of us need to see about what we can do for the guy/girl that beats me the most. Maybe a JBcase with a cue in it...this will help to stimulate the donations.

I have talked with Jim and he is going to donate a cue with two shafts and John is going to do a Matching case, he is also sending a Fury Break cue to fill the case up!

I am looking for an idea also for an "In Memory of Edwin Reyes" inscription to be place on the cue and case.

Joey let me know what I can do to help you with you Raffle.

Mr. Jim lee and Mr. John Barton,

I have been torn between taking these items to Vegas or doing it here on AZB. I feel that everyone here on AZB would appreciate the chance to support a worthy fundrasier/raffle for these items. I think that it would go over better here. I have also looked into the tournament rules out in Vegas concerning raffles and if it done out there it has to be finished prior to the end of the tournament and this is my reason's for my new thought's. I will leave the choice up to you both and that is what we will do. I am completely torn and just wish I could personally do more. But with out great people beside me I would be able to do nothing, so I Thank You very much....

If anyone has any other ideas I am still very open and willing to try and get anything done. All proceeds will go to the family of the late Mr. Edwin "Bandido" Reyes.
