Backers vs. Your Own Money?

Is the anxiety, nervousness, or pressure to win any different if you are being staked than using your own money? There's pressure either way you look at it. Just curious to know how some of you feel.

I have to bet my own, I get too nervous when someone offers to stake me.

I only play cheap.

I believe if you are a good player and feel like its a 50/50 and you are being backed then it changes in your favor a ton. You have nothing to lose and something to gain(monetarily speaking). however you dont wanna kill your stakers wallet either. chances are if he backs you hes not putting up his rent money. He prolly has a ton.

Ive done both ways and i feel the same pressure both ways. Id rather bet my own so i dont have someone watching over me though.

I have backed a lot of players and what I notice is they perform extremely well for me because I put zero pressure on them. I don't care if the miss and I never say a word when they are playing. I just let them play.

So many backers sweat ever shot and basically scare the sh-t out of their horse. A nervous backer usually makes a nervous player - a calm backer usually puts your horse into deadstroke. JMO.

This is all predicated on the fact that ou choose the correct horse to back.

I used to back a guy that was a beast on my money, but the second he had to put a nickel of his in the ring he was useless.

I'm not a great player, but if i'm gambling i want it on my dime. Period. Makes me play better.

Amazing the correlation between real horses and pool playing horses!!!

I greatly prefer gambling with my own. having a backer is very nerve racking for me, I feel bad if I lose and I hate seeing them on the rail looking nervous as hell. I don't feel nervous at all when betting my own, plus I like getting all the cash for myself!

Anyone who has seen me play and still backs me is obviously an idiot :D

Therefore, I feel no sympathy for them....

I actually play better when someone is in on me.....I bear down just a bit more and feel more responsible......and it feels freaking awesome to line a friends pockets....

NEVER LOOKED AT IT THAT WAY, BUT YOU ARE 100% CORRECT.

I'M ALSO VERY CALM WHEN I HAVE MONEY IN THE BOX, AND IT SEEMS TO HELP THE GUYS PLAYING. MAYBE BECAUSE THEY FEEL THAT THE BACKER HAS CONFIDENCE IN THEM........ WHO KNOWS, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT POOL PLAYERS. I'M NOT TRYING TO FIGURE THEM OUT

the one thing i have to say about this is i think its a joke when your potential opponent uses the fact that you are getting backed as an excuse not to play. there is just no more of a joke than this if you use it as an excuse. if you dont want to play because you THINK a guy is getting backed, fine, but dont blurt out "i play on my own and you need a backer" that is such crap and if the moeny is there you need to either play or dont play but dont make that statement or you are really, truly a very "small" man.

the main thing here is, nobody can ever really tell if a guy is getting backed is the truth. and if you think a guy is betting his own maybe he isnt. it would be so easy for me to just have a stakehorse give me 2000 insted of having him come in, do you see the point here. and nobody except for the backer and the player know the exact arragement (unless they tell people). its just sematics, if a guy says i wont play cus you have a stakehorse and you'll be loose, will he play if i come in next time without the stakehorse.... its just useless, just play ir dont play. people shouldnt open their mouth about it cus if the money is there that is really all that matters.

Using your own money vs playing with someone else's money?

This is the entire argument behind the current mortgage crisis. Ever notice how the chances of foreclosure goes up dramatically when you have nothing invested? Doesn't that happen in pool too? If you are gambling with a backer's money, are you really pressured to do your best?

Just open questions since I never gamble. Never met anyone successful enough at it to tempt me into trying it. Most people are lucky to break even.

Would you go to casinos more or less if you used someone elses money?

Opposite for me. I dont need the money, but when people either bet on me or offer to stake me, then I am losing their money.

Either way I play to win, but for me, it is more pressure.

Great responses people. It comes down to what makes the player most comfortable. Some of you are more at ease, so to speak, using your own money where as some of you are more at ease having a backer. I can understand both sides.

Am I fair in making that statement?

i'd have to agree......

I'm gonna say a 50-50 split as to what people prefer.

I never liked losing my own money and I would feel horrible losing someone elses. I felt comfortable playing games up to $50 a game and short sets (5-7 games up to $200. After that I thought about the money too much to play at my best speed. I never used a banker for another reason...I liked to keep ALL my winnings. So I never used a banker and almost always had the nuts...in my mind. Johnnyt=nit, but I almost always made money when I played. Johnnyt
