Sarah Rousey comments on the Women's Worlds

Man oh man, where should I begin. Some serious trashing going on in this thread. First of all, unless you've done it you have no idea the amount of work that goes into producing an event like this. NO IDEA! I could write pages telling all the details, but I won't even attempt that now. My hat is off to Cindy and Charlie and their staff for pulling it off and making this such a momentous event. Pool needs more events like this and more promoters who will go the extra mile to make it happen. I didn't agree with Makabenta and Raya Sports for being slow to pay the players, but I commend them for their efforts as well. Being a pool promoter is a labor of love. Making money is not easy in this racket. If Dragon has found a way to make money promoting pool, then God bless them is all I have to say.

In the Round Robin stages we played short races it's true. But each player got to play the other five players in their group, so there was quite a bit of play to get thru to the Knockout stages. By the way, a Race To Five in Ten Ball is not as short as it sounds. Most matches took an hour or more. I would compare these races with a Race To Seven in 9-Ball (Derby City anyone?). Half the field got thru to the Knockout stages and here the matches are Race To Eight and longer in the Quarterfinals, Semis and Finals.

I personally inspected every tournament table, and got the (very experienced) Puyat mechanics to fix certain things that I found not acceptable. A Puyat mechanic was on duty throughout the tourney. He brushed tables between matches and checked table levels every morning. True they are not Gold Crowns or Diamonds, but they are better than some tables I have seen at other events. I would give them a rating of B-, passable but not great. They are rolling true, the rails are consistent and the balls are cleaned daily. Some of our refs are better than others. It will always be that way. Overall I'm happy with them though. They aren't amateurs, most being long time players over here. I have watched every ref in action, and I'm comfortable with their ability. The refs are getting the calls right and that's what matters to me. If a ref was truly bad, I would know about it, QUICK!

We have had one forfeited match, by the Russian lady. Her match was scheduled for 5 PM, and we began calling her at 5:20 to let her know she was next up. At 5:25 we called the match and she had fifteen minutes to appear. She did finally come into the arena at 6 PM, twenty minutes too late. She said she thought the matches were delayed until 6 PM because of the rain affected table. Nothing like this was ever said. I know because I was the one making announcements. What I said was that there would be some delays in playing matches because one table was out of commission and we would play the matches on an available table basis. She was never scheduled to play on the rain affected table either. Her big mistake was leaving the arena and going over to where the TV matches were being played. She couldn't hear the announcements from there. When she told me where she had been, I asked her why she didn't stay in the Sky Dome and wait for me to call her match. She thought someone was going to call her and let her know when she was up to play. Bottom line, she learned a good lesson she will never forget. Don't depend on anyone else to look out for you. They may get distracted or side tracked (what happened here).

What I am very aware of is that we are communicating in English and these women are from all over the globe and many don't understand our announcements. It behooves them to check with tourney staff if they are unsure and the more experienced ladies do that (the Taiwan players ask me about everything). Having someone translate is also very helpful. I felt bad for her but there was nothing I could do at that point. The match was over.

One more thing, the $75,000 is not a bad prize in Women's pool and the 20K on top is serious money. Say what you want about Dragon (I particularly don't like all the below the belt punches), but they ALWAYS pay off and right away! That puts them ahead of a lot of current promoters. There were many other top women who were invited to this event who didn't attend for one reason or another. Several were kept away by their various federations. Don't ask me why. I have no idea. More pool politics I guess. Whoever wins will be a deserving champion. There are many quality players left.

By the way, I met Shanelle Loraine for the first time here. She is a lovely person, very intelligent with a glowing personality. She knows her game is not on a par with the best players, not even close. But she is willing to do what it takes to get there. She has a lot of determination to be a good player. I remember when Jennifer Baretta first came on tour. She was derided for being a pretty face and not much else. She sure showed them! P.S. Shanelle won her match with Hubrtova, a top player from Europe, firing in the Ten Ball from distance. The girl has heart, she just needs many hours of practice. I believe if she sticks with it, she will continue to improve.

Feel free to respond pro or con. I have to go do my thing now.

I'm sure it takes a hell of alot of work promoting pool. All I want to say is charlie is not the guy for the job. He's about treacherous as don king.

Women’s sports are harder to promote then men’s. If adding a few playboy bunnies helps get it out to the masses then good. Plus, having a few average shooters in the field would be a good thing for the real shooters.

It’s not so much about the sport as it is about marketing. Women’s tennis wouldn’t be as popular if not for the sexy outfits and sexy women playing. Since 80% of the viewers are men you need to cater to them. If the guys want to watch the best players, they’ll tune in to watch the men play.

If DP can provide a venue for players to earn cash, showcase their skills and give us pool players something to watch then good for them.

Promoters jobs are to promote, the players play.

And im not bashing Sarah. If she wants to vent about crap she doesn’t like fine with me. I’ve told my boss where to go many times.

So basically you saying the tables weren't good, the conditions weren't good, the races were short but because it took awhile its okay, a girl that cant play and looks good was allowed to play in what was suppose to be the best of the best in womens pool and the refs werenot great but didnt make any big mistakes so they were okay.

Sound like because you were involved you are sugar coating a piss poor run tournament for the top women players.

Just because charlie talked some sponsors into putting big money up doesnt mean its a good tourney. Just means that charlie would sell out his fellow pool players to make some good money by putting them on crap tables, with short races, bad lighting, and a place that has leaks i mean wtf Jay. Get off charlies nuts because he ispaying you money you sell out.

I suppose the challenge of champions is a great tourney too ahhahaha..I mean they give 50k to a pool player its great too!!! races to 5 best 2 of 3 sets on buckets and they never even have the best players usually.

If you know somewhere else the women can go to play longers races, on better equipment and get $75,000 in prize money, I'm sure they'll go there instead.

This whole thread is not about prize money.. its about the quality of the tourney and its setup

For example even though the Ipt turned out to be a bust it was probaly the best run pool tournaments ever for professionals..They were treated like celebrities at the events. They were treated with respect for being the best pool players in the world. They had good equipment , long enough races, tough tables, lounge areas, and even masseuses.

The players raved about how great the setup was for it but in the end the promoter claimed it a bust but for a few months the best players in the world felt like thay had a true professional sport

We are being infiltrated by newbs! Hey Jay I think the most valid thing is Dragon Promotions is putting big money in players pockets which is not a common thing these days. I do believe some things could be better in the event and wish they had invited some more of the top female players. I do not understand how people can feel that pool will be better off without Dragon Promotions in it, it means less money for the players for sure and hurts the game.

I would rather have Dragon Promotions where the players get handed a check that will cash instead of the IPT where you get money in a payment plan regardless of all the smoke and mirrors.

Blogging is impulsiveness waiting to happen. Let's give that to Sarah. I don't think she should be bashed here. She blogged from the heart.

Regarding the tables, I don't think that Puyat still makes tables. These are old tables that have a lot of playing time and history in them. How many tables do we find in tournaments that have been used over and over again by the greatest pool players in the world? That throws in some premium but they should really think of rebuffing the tables to world-class playability and spend for new cloth, banks and leather before every tournament.

As for Jay, he remains to be consistent. In the last WTBC, he saw and mentioned only what was good and he got bashed for it. I was guilty of that during those days when I took sides. I guess some can call it sugar-coating, but I think that's just the way he is.

Maybe if there were bad calls by the refs, somebody can complain. Until then, I think they're ok. Re shot clocks, I remember Edwin Reyes sourcing tournament shotclocks. I just don't know if they had time to install them because they're relying on refs to time the intervals.

Personally, I think that packaging sex in the tournament was okay (maybe a bit too much), except for the fact that some players are not comfortable in a subliminally labeled sexy tournament; and that the sexy ones (in male drooling eyes) are the ones given the TV table. I don't think though that it would have made a difference in attendance. Perhaps the sponsors liked the idea, we don't know.

Jay made a good point about the short race. Race to 5 in 10-ball is different from a Race to 5 in 9-ball. Since all the seeded are still in, I suppose the format works.

Let me just commend Bob Guerrero. He's a fantastic anchor and I think he really upgrades the tournaments that he covers. He has presence of mind to talk about a whole lot of things in his databank aside from doing play-by-play. What's nice about him is that nobody owns him.

What I am excited about is our 11 year old Gillian Go. She's into the round of 24 and I think this tournament will place a mark in her history. Her first "big" tournament was just last month in the fundraiser Bandido Cup. I was her first game and she really got an instant fan. I immediately called Coach Boyet Asonto to watch our game just to find out that she already had caught his attention. That was last only month!

Go Gillian Go!

all people remember is the last payoff but what about the ones where the pros got more money than they ever had before and the tournaments were run great..if charlie gets them to put up that kind of money for a crappy tourney just think what he is robbing them for???

Almost every pro pool player hates charlie williams just to let you know they think he is a croook and thats because he is...he isnt trying to better the sport he is trying to make a living i cant fault him for that but just dont like to see people pretend that he is just doing it to better the sport

Actually, the IPT set the standard when it came to arbitrary slection of the competitive field. The tour was chiefly comprised of people that had submitted an application, not those with established competitive credentials. In fact, a former world champion I know of that applied was denied entry. Sorry, but that's not the way it's done.

Perhaps the races to 5 are taking two hours because the Pool Player Barbies can't sink a ball.

I don't understand how anyone can defend these conditions when DP has been holding tournaments long enough to know better.

Any player male or female player who has a problem with bringing sexy to pool probably doesn't realize how much more money they will make because of it.

I guarantee every person watching Shanelle Lorraine on tv did not care when she missed shots. I will pay for any live stream she is on. If he didn't put her on tv every match he would be a foolish business man and would be hurting the player's financial future. How were the ratings when Shanelle was on tv I wonder.

I understand what DP is trying to do, but there are already enough beautiful women that play on the WPBA tour or regional tours that play just as good. Get one of them to play and put them on the TV rounds. It's not much fun watching two girls play that don't play much better than I do:(.

I watched Sarah Rousey playing on ESPN at a bar the other night. Two guys were watching talking about how cute they thought she was. Jennifer Baretta, Ming Ng, Chris Delagarza and Kristy Carter are also beautiful women who are pretty, would look good on the TV rounds AND (more importantly) have game!

My own opinion, if I go watch a billiard event, I want to watch GOOD pool otherwise it's a waste of time!

Race to 5 10 ball in round robin portion of the tourney sounds fine for tv. That way you can see more full matches and different players. Everyone was agreeing with Sarah because she left out the part where the races get longer as the tourney progresses. Bad judgement Sarah.
