IMHO, the exact same (or very similar) story could be written about any animal we as the human race use at our disgresion be it for food, clothing, shelter, decoration or other by products.
I like the look and feel of ivory in my cues just as much as I would like buckhorn, but for some reason buckhorn seems to be the more politically correct material. I've hunted deer and elk all my life, and it's no less gruesome than the stories of elephants, but (and I speak from my own experience) it becomes more gruesome when wildlife populations are not controlled and the deer and elk end up dead at a rate of 2 animals per mile of highway.

Can't say that I've ever seen a cue made out of a near extinct species of tree. Trees are much easier to cultivate than elephants, as elephants die much more rapidly when in captivity rather than in the wild. Elephants also don't breed well in captivity due to a couple of factors such as courtship training, medical problems, and social disorders.
Honestly I don't really care for ivory in a cue, not only because of the moral or ethical problems, but because I simply don't care for the look of it. I think a lot of people want it simply because of the "cool" factor of having ivory, something not a lot of people can afford to have, which is a shame.

I read the whole story... word for word... and I still feel the same about using ivory. I'm dead-fuvking-set against it! .... and always have been. It's just plain wrong.
Since you were able to read the story, could you relay it to the rest of us? Thanks
Some big shot military a..holes wanted ivory trophies so several men and elephants were killed and mutulated.
So he wont use ivory in his cues to each there own is what i say. But does he feel just as strong about elephant ear wraps ? Or ostrich wraps as well or how ever you spell it. I mean if your going to ban Ivory on your cue making that is very respectful but what about say shark skin wraps ? You just cant knock on one door and not knock on the other doors.
All I know, is I want a cue with "banned" ivory. Most cuemakers use pre-banned stuff, and everyone knows that illegal materials play much better than "legal" materials.

I was wondering exactly the same thing as JoseV. What's the answer, 3kushn? Does he make his cues with any kind of leather wrap or use other animal products?
I believe the only leather wrap Dieckman ever use was Cowhide, otherwise its irish linen, or natural wood. That all I've have seen.
Not all ivory comes from elephants. Hippos, rhinos and whales have all supplied ivory. Cue inlays could be made from non-elephant ivory, while balls, because of their size, require elephant tusks.

I don't see why wildlife cannot be managed (and yes, harvested) to get the best of both worlds.
But, I am not attracted to, or impressed by, or disgusted by, ivory. I believe it is a case of a "connection to tradition" or a "status symbol" rather than the best material for an application.

No, he was flying in the airplane. I think the story indicates officers were the pilots, he was the FAC guy in the plane.
