Anybody ever see these pros any more?

Howard Vickery.....nothing listed on the AZB tournament earnings since 2006. I knew he was in Columbus and then Florida, then back to Ohio. Have not heard anything on how he's doing. Never see his name even in smaller tournaments. I liked him a lot.

Jim Rempe....one of America's all time best players. A 9 ball and 14.1 powerhouse. I know he goes to Valley Forge for the Super billiard Expo to help out at the Meuchi booth, but I never hear of him playing anymore anywhere.

Pete Margo....in the 1970's and early 1980's, a 14.1 giant! Quit the game to venture into business (Blockbuster Video) but was one of our stronger 14.1 players. Part of the group from the east coast (Hopkins, Mizerak, Colavita, Ervolino, Ray Martin, Sigel, etc) to have dominated 14.1 tournament play.

Tom Jennings....won the 1976 & 1977 U.S. Open 14.1 Championships when the PPPA boycotted the BCA and started their own group. A math teacher from NJ, he disappeared after Lisciotti beat him in that challenge match.

Edgar White, Earl Herring, Ed Sheahan, Seth "Buttermilk" Brown, Keith Thompson, Mark Beilfus...the list could get very long if we started listing the men who once played this game at the upper level and now, who knows what they're doing?

Does anybody in AZBdom ever bump into any of these guys in poolhalls or even a WalMart? Any stories or info on sightings would be appreciated.

Jim Rempe is my butler. The judge ordered him to do it after he crashed into my car and did not have insurance.

Jim Rempe retired from Pool. He still teaches from his home in Scranton.

Pete Margo didn't start with Blockbuster. He and Gene Balner opened Palmer Video and sold their business.

Earl Herring still plays some, recreationally. He and I were playing in the same regional tour stop in NJ recently.

Allen Hopkins and Earl Herring both played in the 2008 World 14.1 Championships.

Edgar "Shake 'N Bake" White passed away several years ago. After he won the big Tropicana tourney in Vegas in 1978 or 79, "Shake "N Bake" became a popular advertising slogan used all over Vegas. Edgar had the most infectious smile you ever saw, and it was almost always plastered on his face. I will never forget that big broad smiling face. What a lovely guy he was. A damn good player too!

Terry,

I didn't see him at SBE this year. Didn't see a Meucci booth either!

Earl Herring plays in selected Joss Tour Events. He is active and still plays very well. Don't know where he's playing out of however. My guess is he'll be at the Turning Stone in August. Does he know you?

Vickery was a member/player of the IPT.

Todd,
I think after the IPT, Howard, Jim Rempe, and maybe some others (Keith McCready?) packed it in for good. Ed Kelly came out of retirement for the IPT, then returned to Vegas. I think the demise of the IPT took a lot of the wind from these guys. After years of relatively low paying tournaments compared to some other sports, hopes were high with the IPT. Big letdown for many.

Plus, poker has stolen some of the pros....Evgeny Stalev being exhibit A.

I never heard he passed Jay. Sad news....
That smile was captured on one of the covers of the National Billiard News
in the mid 1970's. In fact, it may have been as a result of the tournament win you mention. I'll check later.

He had a very strong game indeed.

I don't know how I missed E.H. playing in that event...I am getting very absent minded with age.

Do you remember Ernie Costa? Herb Lehmann? Howie Pearl? Howie was a frequent poster at the old Billiard Digest forums. He moved to Florida years ago. Howie was a fun loving guy!

Lyn,
Earl Herring does not know me. But you can tell him I been reading about him for 35+ years now, again, thanks to the old National Billiard News. That ought to make him feel nice! :D

Jim Rempe knows me as we've met several times at Valley Forge as well as spoken on the phone. He's a Christian now and brought some great stuff to VF for me. He was classy every time we spoke. I have not been to VF for 3 years now, so I haven't seen him in some time.

Legendary players such as Rempe....you hear and read about them for years and years, then all of a sudden, it's like they dropped off the earth!
I can't believe nobody bumps into him around eastern Penna. Last news I heard of him was that he was starting a clothing business, but I'm not certain that that wasn't just scuttlebut.

Ed Sheahan used to own a poolroom in NJ. Wonder what he's doing nowadays?

Terry,

Every once in a while Ted "Magic Man" Garrahan surfaces in Vegas. I believe Ted runs the poker room at Green Valley Ranch Casino. I ran into "Mad Max" Eberle last week in Vegas. Didn't recognize him. Short hair and clean cut. Mike Zuglan still runs the Joss Northeast 9 Ball Tour. I hoped to see him and / or "Butch" Leonard at the NYS 14.1. Neither showed. Rochester has become the backwaters of pool. We used to see "Weenie Beanie", Danny Diliberto, Liel JR Gay and others come through. I the past few years, the only player who visited us was Will Bill "Cecil" Paye Payton or whatever he calls himself now. It appears even the art of the road player has died, at least in our area.

Hey Terry,

I can't say I blame them for being bummed out. I was lucky enough to travel to the Orlando event and got to witness many of the "Old Guard" Hall of Famers play. I also got just about every one of their autographs too. Lucky me.

It's too bad things didn't go better for the Hall of Famers and all the other players too, but it was nice to witness them play.

Yes, Terry, I knew all of them. Ernie Costa, a fine straight pooler, was ranked about 10th on the PPPA in the early 1980's. I believe Herb Lehmann still does pool table setups in the New York area. Howie Pearl was a fine local player, and was among those I saw play at the Golden Q in Queens, NY, in the 1980's. He was a crackup.

Terry...Howie retired from law, moved to FL for his health, and still lives with his wife in Tampa. His health is not so good these days. He is still a huge sports fan, and loves the USF teams, as they live adjacent to the campus. Howie has a hard time standing for very long. I took him to the poolroom, closest to campus, a few years ago, and we played for about an hour, before he had to quit. He still had some game, even though he had not played in years! Everybody remembers "Mighty Mouse"!

Howie, wife, & mutt

Howie and his wife brought their yammering mutt to every FL tour event. I guess the dog never "sharked" anyone. Everyone seemed to love the whole family.

Pete Margo was at Comet Billiards a couple weeks ago giving lessons.

Earl Herring played in the last Predator event at Comet. I played him and he was running out from everywhere.

Teddy G. and I talk every now and then and he's in Vegas working in a card room. Doesn't play much but can still pick up a cue and run 100+.
