More than half of 2009 is in the books, so who is in the "lead" so far for the prestigous title "Player of the Year 2009"?

What major tournaments do you think InsidePool uses for their calculation and summary to decide who it will be?

My suggestions:
DCC 9-ball: Shane Van Boening, Van Corteza 2nd
Turning Stone Classic XII: Ralf Souquet, Hatch 2nd
World Pool Masters: Darren Appleton, van den Berg 2nd
Qatar 9-ball Open: Mika Immonen, Ko 2nd
Predator 10-ball: Dennis Orcullo, Souquet 2nd
Philippine 10-ball Open: Ricky Yang, De Luna 2nd
Pro 10-ball Expo: John Schmidt, Deuel 2nd
China 9-ball Open: Thorsten Hohmann, Feijen 2nd
World Games: Ralf Souquet, Yang 2nd
Million Dollar 9-ball: not happening
Galveston 10-ball: Mika Immonen, Luat 2nd
Galveston 8-ball: Ronato Alcano, Archer 2nd
Galveston 1-pocket: Efren Reyes, Daulton 2nd
US Open: Mika Immonen, Souquet 2nd
World 14-1 Championship: Stephan Cohen, Immonen 2nd
World Ten Ball Championship:
All Japan Championship:
WPA-ranking: Darren Appleton is currently the #1, Souquet 2nd

Tournaments/rankings that I believe can add value if very close race between players:

Eurotour-ranking: Ralf Souquet current #1, Feijen 2nd
BCA-ranking: Johnny Archer #1, Immonen 2nd
DCC 10-ball Challenge: Lee Van Corteza, Souquet 2nd
US Bar Table Overall: Glen Atwell, Appleton 2nd
DCC Master of the table: Brumback, Hennessee 2nd
World Cup of Pool (teams): Efren Reyes/Fransisco Bustamante, Hohmann/Souquet 2nd
European Championships 9-ball : Nick van den Berg, Ruslan 2nd
European Championships 14-1 : Dimitri Jungo, Feijen 2nd
European Championships 8-ball : Andreas Roschkowsky, Ekonomopoulos 2nd
Mezz Classic 14-1: Johnny Archer, Immonen 2nd
Mezz Classic 10-ball: Mika Immonen
World Classic 10-ball: Mika Immonen

So far I can't see anyone dominate the first half of 2009, but Souquet has some very good finishes in all tournaments, plus he is so far ranked #3rd on the BCA-ranking. Very small (tiny) favourite so far, imo.

Should there be other tournaments added to the list? Please come with your suggestions

Three horse race to me. Souquet, Schmidt, and Appleton.

If John Schmidt, not even invited to compete in the World Pool Masters, adds the World 14.1 title to his 10 Ball title at the Valley Forge Expo and his DCC One Pocket championship, he might deserve the nod as 2009 Player of the Year.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. Still a lot of pool to be played!

I do agree that if John Schmidt snaps of the World 14-1 Championship, combined with his victories in DCC one-pocket and the Valley Forge, will give him great chances of becoming the Player of the Year.

Hopefully John will also try his luck in the upcoming World Ten Ball Championship this year.

Ralf Souquet should get player of the DECADE in 2010. Since 2000 this man has just played so consistantly, and winning everything. Very rare to see this man not get top 5 in a tournament nowadays.

I vote Ralf for player of the year 2009

I really don't see anyone else in the conversation for player of the decade. It's time to count Souquet among the greatest that has ever played our sport.

If Yang played in more US/European tournaments this would be no contest.

Souquet cleaned his clock, 11-4, in the final of the World Games earlier today.

This is not to suggest that Yang is not among the most elite, for he obviously is, but your suggestion that he'd be having his way with the biggest stars of today given the opportunity does not stand up to scrutiny on this occasion.

guys the big factor gets played at the end of sept-decade ralf can have but the year is still up in the air

You forgot to quote everything I wrote. I said Ralf Souquet should be player of the year 2009. But I beleive there is also a "player of the decade" aswell. And that would be coming up in 2010 no? Johnny Archer got it for the 90's, and Souquet should get it for the new millenium.

Actually, I read wat you wrote and agreed with you. Ralf, as you note, is defintiely the player of this decade.

Ralf

I agree, Ralf, should get 'Player of the year' and 'Decade'. No one is as competively consistent as he is, but it also should be noted that he probably plays in more high profile tournaments than most players do.

He is the ultimate professional, and a definate credit to the sport.

I also believe that Ralf is major favourite for the Decade, but he is just a tiny favourite, if at all, for the year.

Tournaments still not played:

World 14-1 Championship
US Open 9-ball
Galveston
World Ten Ball Championship

Glen Atwell

Glen Atwell's sweep in Las Vegas this year and doing something NO ONE has ever done by being in all THREE finals and winning first in one and second in two others OVER names like, Appleton and others deserves Player of the Year in my opinion.

Now, I am sure people will flame me or say Glenn who? But consider this, over a week, he player better than Appleton over four or five days in three different games and Appleton, is arguably one of the strongest this year over the other names such as Ralf and others. And it cannot be disputed......

NO ONE has ever in the history beein in all three finals of the US Bar Table Championships in the history!

Flame on!
