American World Straight Pool Champion 2009?

Black Balled Put me down for a 100 if you are still taking stakers. PM me if I am in on this or not. I am hoping to get in because I think it is a good propisition.

Max, I hope you start posting here whether it is technical stuff or road stories or whatever. This AZ site gets stale with some of the haters but there are some dedicated pool lovers on here to so don't worry too much about the negative vibe it happens on a web forum.

In closing Good Luck Max

Yes. Beware the all the "haters" here, lads. And the negative vibes that ruin your mojo. And don't forget all the people here who also see the pink elephants, Sasquatch, UFOs, and the Loch Ness Monster here too ;-)

Lou...Come on man, I love ya, but please just let this go!...and that goes for EVERYBODY else who has been bashing Lou, et al. If you don't have a positive comment about helping Max get to the tournament, please just don't post anymore. It's hard enough to get through long threads like this, without them being made longer with the back and forth stuff. Lou...I know you didn't start it...but let's just finish it here and now. Good luck in the 14.1 qualifier in Chicago. I really hope you win, and get YOUR shot at the Big Show in NJ!

Scott I'm happy to let it go.

BUT, if anyone with any outstanding questions to them, that I have posed to you, after some BS accusation about "haters," wants to PM me with their answers (you know who you are), I'll be more than happy to continue this in private.

And thanks for the good thoughts about Chicago. Really, it's just my birthday and I made the mistake of telling my wife and she got all excited and said, "Cool. I'll take you out to a great dinner downtown; we get to see John (Lavin) and BJ again; and you get to play some straight pool." So we're going.

I've played like maybe three games of 14.1 in the last 20 years. But whaddahey. I'll get a good seat for at least two matches and get to see my very good bud, Monsignor Lavin, again. It's all good. Who knows. I might get even lucky :-)

Lou Figueroa

Thanks Lou! Not sure if you meant downtown Chicago, but if so, and your wife's budget allows, there's some really great restaurants! PM me if you need some suggestions. If you're talking about down nearer Red Shoes, there's a really excellent Italian restaurant in Cicero, which is just a few miles from Red Shoes (let me know if you want the name...I've eaten there a few times, but the name escapes me, at the moment. I can call a friend and get the name and address if you need it)! Oh...and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Good guys always finish first

I just got back from traveling for a while and came home to this thread. I met Max last year at the US Open in Virginia; I had taken my 13 year old son to his very first pool tournament [he plays, I watch.] One of the first people we met there was Grace Nakamura,[a GREAT lady and an amazing person!] who told me I needed to find a good coach for my son [Brendan] ASAP, and suggested that we track Max down in Chesapeake. We did, and in spite of being in the middle of play in the tournament, Max spent a lot of time with Brendan, encouraging him, giving him tips and pointers, introducing him to other pros [Brendan knew them all from watching match videos] and helping him get started the right way in the pool world [remember I don't play so I don't know $#it.] Max was living in LA at the time, and when we all got back here he kept playing with Brendan, working with him daily for a month in anticipation of Brendan competing in a qualifier to represent the US in the Junior World Championships in Reno last Thanksgiving. Max could not have been a more empathetic coach, and really helped Brendan understand what it would take to get his game in shape to succeed. Brendan went to Reno, won the qualifier, competed in the Jr. Worlds, and really got a taste of what it's like at that level of competition.
Max left LA about that time, spent some time in the Far East playing pool, and came back to the US but not to LA. As a result, Brendan started working with Sal Butera, and with Sal's coaching has continued to succeed [he just won the 14 and under championship at US Jr Nationals and is going to Nicaragua to rep the US in the Jr Worlds in November.]
But Max got Brendan started in the right way, and made him feel like he could be a winner and a success. He was exactly the right guy at the right time, he taught, he challenged, he inspired, and he did it all, as far as I could see, for the love of the game and the chance to give something back. [He did like my wife's vegan broccoli pasta....]
So two points:
1. IMHO, you can be a great ambassador and asset for pool without having 1000's of posts on AZB.
2. What goes around comes around; count me in for $500. Go get 'em, Max.
best,
bill crockett

Mr. Crockett, excellent post, and thank you for your insight into differen't ways people can be judged. If Max, or for that matter if anyone had to live up to all of our expectations on what makes a person worthy to support, than very few if any would pass the test. Max happens to be an excellent player with the capabilities to win any event, and in addition to that he certainly qualifies and passed the test on building character through integrity.

I would like to donate $200 to the pot, and if Max does well he can keep my % no matter what it is. Play good Max, and even if you don't do well i'm not mad at ya. Stay at a nice hotel.

Jay Helfert will pay my $200 and I will get it to him the next time we see oneanother. OK Jay?

That's AWESOME generosity Bill! Thank you very much! That takes us over $2000! Do you remember the "king of the hill" tournament, at Cue Can Do (Karabotos's room), in Schaumburg, years ago? I beat Neal Jacobs, Larry Schwartz, and Marco Marquez, to get to you in the finals...where I proceeded to be your RACK BOY (IIRC, you beat me something like 15-3)! LOL In every match, I was down, with just 1 or 2 games, and my opponents were on the hill. I clawed my way back, in every match, to win! Too bad that didn't work against you, sir! Thanks again, for joining the Mad Max Backer Fund Group!

What happens if Jay says no? LOL. Just kidding, I am sure he won't.

I find this entire thread kind of funny. I love the support that Max is getting from most people; however, I do find it funny that people that choose not to support Max, or even ask questions, are getting blasted.

I know Max, somewhat, because he used to live in the MD/DC area and I agree that he is a great guy. However, I also agree with a lot of posters regarding who we should support (ie., someone who contributes to the forum).

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Amazing!

Bill! I'm touched man thank you! In addition to all these great folks, I have a hall of famer jumping in the mix :) Being a one pocket hall of famer, the best 9-ball player in the country at one time from what I've heard, and a very intelligent commentator, I'm sure you can play some 14.1 too. It makes me think, are you playing? Commentating? Watching in person? Either way, thank you!

And...
Thank you Roy Steffensen!
Thank you elvicash!
Thank you Dana!
Thank you PoolsharkAllen for adding more!

Thank you Hilla!
Thank you Darlene!
Thank you Marvel! ...I was at Yellowstone last week for a day, for the first time ever, what a wondrous, beautiful place! I recommend it highly for anyone's bucket list haha! The brink of the Lower Falls will take your breath away.

Thank you Scott Lee! Hey, sounds like you can play some tournament pool too besides all the fancy stuff, haha!

Thanks again to you Black Balled as well, much appreeech.

Max

...gonna go run some frames of straight...

JDB...How can you say that someone who wrote a column here on AzB, is somehow not a contributor to the forums?

Am I reading this right.Max is begging for money to enter the tournament?A world class player and cannot pick up a sponser...We are in a sad state...

I just shipped $ 100.02, for me, and Lou :D

I don't know about Lou's .02 but my $ 100 is not considered a donation. If he makes it deep in the tournament I hope to get some $$ back :)

No matter what happens I hope that Max will start contributing more to the forum in the future.

Good luck in the event, Max.

He is not begging at all, he is looking for a sponsor or a backer and this is a great network to do it. All of these people are backing him and if he cashes they make some dough. As for legitimate sponsors, there are a ton of pros who do not have one, your right it is said but it is how pool is and has been for a long time.

billaur...I would hardly call this "begging". If anything it is being driven by myself, and a few others (not Max). I want to see this elite level player get a shot to win this event...and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. Fortunately, there are many others who feel the same way! When Max played in this event in 2006, he placed 3rd! He's playing even better now! We consider it an INVESTMENT! It's certainly a lot better potential return than the stock market, where, if you lose your money, you get nothing. Here, we have the satisfaction of knowing we've helped our sport, supported a top American player, and a great ambassador for pool!

Show me, please, where ANYONE "hates" Max?

Lou Figueroa

I think I see the problem. Somebody hijacked your username and posted this..

And part of me -- after looking at all 14 of your posts in over two years as an AZ member and not finding a single post that remotely approaches helping other board members with a tip, a suggestion, a shot explanation, an aiming system(?!), a trip report, or at least an entertaining story from your tournament experiences or matching up -- just wants to say, "eh."

Perhaps the moderators can conduct an investigation and figure out who posted that under your username.

I can't see how that means that Lou hates Max.

Please explain.
