Well, I tried to keep my mouth shut but it has been eating me away and I can't keep my lid on anymore.

We all wonder why big Asian Pool Stars such as Wu Chia-Ching http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_Chia-ching or Yang Ching-Shun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yang_Ching-shun in US tournament.

The answer is simple...

It's not worth their trouble to come to US. Even if their sponsors pick up all their travel expense, lodging and whatever. It is not worth it to them to deal with the hassle of foreign culture/ discomfort, jet leg, loosing time with their family... yada, yada, yada...

Mainly, NOT ENOUGH MONEY to win.

So, I thought when this Galveston was buzzing, I thought the $50,000 first place guaranteed may entice them to start competing in US. But now after the Galveston fiasco, I don't know if US "Guaranteed Money" will mean anything to these foreign super stars - EVER!

I know many people expressed that Galveston was good for pool with our without all it's failures.

Those who thought it was good for pool were all you people who stayed at home and enjoyed the crappy "free" feed.

If you BURNED your "limited" vacation time and SPENT your hard earned money (during this economy) and went there, you would be pissed about :

1) Promoters cancelling divisions without notifying the players. If notified
properly, players had an option to cancel their travel plans.
2) Lack of added money which they promised. Do the math! They
promised to add $ 190,000 and I can only see about $80,000 added.
3) 1st place money was reduced from the advertised amount after the
event was underway.
4) Changing the criteria of Amateur - which opened the doors for the
pros to enter into formerly "No Pros allowed" amateur events.
5) Matches lasting until 3-4 a.m, because they couldn't start the
tournament until 2 days after the scheduled dates...

People got screwed left and right and all that people could say was "It was good for pool?"

Well, I think by giving good credits for events that was less than what it promised to be only brings our expectation and value down from people who strive to do things right.

You might be in for a surprise come Derby City time. That's all I've got to say now.

I have a friend who met with Yang a few weeks ago in Taiwan. He is interested in coming to Derby if the dates work and his expenses are paid. We are working on it. Good news is we actually have a way to talk to him now.

As for Galveston...ummm yeah.

<----tired of being a naysayer

Actually such stars as Fong Pang Chao and others have been to the USA at tournaments such as the US Open, Challenge of Champions, Predator events, etc...

It is actually not very easy for a Taiwanese to get a visa to the USA. Wu came to play in the last IPT event didn't he?

It is understandable that they might be gun shy about tournament structures but that hasn't stopped the Filipinos from coming and taking home the majority of the money.

It seems as though the Americans might be somewhat relieved not to have an influx of foreign superstars with nerves of steel taking down the money.

Yang

They are trying for Yang at the Derby .This is what Greg told me in L-VILLe this weekend at a bank tourny .Well see might be action ?

WU comes to the World pool masters no? And that tournament doesn't payout as good as some of the other big tournaments in the US

That is great new! Derby City Classic is a reputable tournament with 12+ years of sucessful running and I think it's promoters have been the top notch, always. When all athe top European players show up, year after year, you know there's something getting done right! Maybe, like, no one has t worry about the prize check getting cleared that year, LOL!

All that respect and recognition is earned - not just given! and I cannot wait to see what else comes after:grin-square:

World Maser Pool is not a US event.

It is sponsored and produced by Match Room Sports (UK - broadcasting live in Europe), with no entry fee, bouquet payouts with a prestigious title. Yes, it takes place in US, but the US has no rights or claim to it's success.

The truth for those sharp players not come to state the major reason is the language barrier, if some state big comps sort their living cost and interpreters then.............

Actually, there is more sharp players inside the island.

Anyway, I believe to make pool players interflow through bet countries, it's the best idea.

just opinion

Any talk of getting Yang in a TAR match? I would love to see that!

I understand your concern, Sunny, and your husband, M.G., does a lot to contribute to pool, including selflessly helping others in the industry. It is no secret that he has provided monetary support to several pool entities in an effort to keep them afloat, as well as bankrolled entire pool operations, to include paying off that Arizona fiasco.

One only has to be a member of this forum for a short time to know all that he has done to help others. I certainly hold him in the highest regard, much more so than some of the pariahs with inflated egos that post on this forum, always needing reassurance and pats on the back.

I do feel there is enough room in this pool world for more pool entities to contribute. There is one school of thought that it may not be a good idea to condemn Galveston, as this was their first time out of the gate. Did they make mistakes? You betcha, but they still tried to make things happen. There's certainly been enough forum traffic for all to read, pros and cons.

You see, Sunny, as strongly as you feel about your husband's goodwill, there are others who feel strongly about their pool contributions. Though they may not be as monetarily significant as M.G., they are still done with goodwill, good intentions, and hoping for the best.

I read on the front page about a tournament that took place in the Carolinas this past weekend, the Jacoby tour, I think. Shawn Putnum won $1,500 for first place, and Earl Strickland won $75 for fifth place. Though I appreciate Jacoby and especially all regional tours just like it, it is difficult to swallow, seeing two world champions competing for this kind of dough. However, I'm sure they were both happy to pocket the cheese, when all was said and done. :grin-square:

I hope this year's DCC is graced with the appearance of Wu, et al. Greg Sullivan has always tried to help the pool player make it to his events by offering free lodging, entry fees, whatever he can do. Personally, I have always held Greg Sullivan in the highest regard. He must be doing something right because the DCC could be, in fact, the pool event of the year for most pool folk.

I wish you nothing but happiness, Sunny, in your forthcoming pool adventures, to include getting the opportunity to see our Pacific brethren of players make it to American soil. I hope you interpret my post in the spirit that I shared.

Good to see you posting JAM!

I'm going to spend a couple thousand to attend the DCC for the first time this year and it's primarily because of Greg and the impression he made on me when I met him for the first time a few weeks back at Red Shoes.

What a positive guy! No wonder he's been able to make the worlds best table... to take it from the germ-of-an-idea stage all the way to being at the top of the heap. Positive energy does that. Having a dream and following that dream does that.

If I had money I'd invest it in Greg and his ideas.

Same goes for Mark... from what I've seen.

Both straight shooters who believe in mankind and follow their dreams.

JAM,

I really do appreciate your input and it's all good. But when it comes down to the line, it's not about how deep ones' pocket is but: "HOW GOOD IS YOUR WORD?"

I know Kevin Treadeau had a deeper pocket than anyone that we know but but he didn't deliver what he said he would... Galveston people said that their pocket was deep and their money guaranteed too...

I just wish that people back up what they say, but this is pool, right? Maybe that's why it won't get any better...

I hear ya' and understand your stance completely. What is a shame is those who forget the very ones who selflessly helped them, only to get stepped on like a bug later on when they didn't need to use them anymore.

Some people are users; some people are givers. I think everyone knows where you and M.G. stand. Givers, of course!

Jim, I hope you have a blast at the DCC, but be sure you've gotten your beauty rest before you embark on this journey. It is the place where love blossoms, new friendships are created, and pool players can stay in action 24/7.

I have met a lot of pool folk in my travels, i.e., pool promoters, organizers, tournament directors, et cetera. Greg Sullivan is top shelf in my book. I love everything about him, to include his cute Kentucky accent. His other half is also as sweet as can be. The people he has in his corner are all first class, but what I admire the most about Greg Sullivan is his sincere desire to see pool rise in popularity.

He doesn't post on this forum very often, but, believe me, he keeps in touch with his friends, and I'm proud to say that I'm one of them!

Long live the DCC!

I was going to start a thread on this this morning until I saw your post Jam. From what I've seen in the payout/purses for most regional tours lately...it's pitiful. Maybe those that said more regional tours would hurt were right. If there are not enough players to fill up the tours, or are not interested in doing so, then I would think there are too many tours out there. Johnnyt
