Decal cues

It seems that decal cues get very little respect.
So i ask this question. Let's take a Joss plain jane that sells for $200 or so. I think most people would agree that this is a
good cue. If they slap on a bunch of decals to spruse it up, it would still be the same cue.
But i think it would get snubbed.
Thoughts ?

Wood is graded. Superior grades cost more. I would trust a reputable company to buy the best grades. Would you trust a Decal cue co. that you have never heard of to do the same?

I myself would never buy a decal cue. I would definitely take a plane cue with a nice grain any day.

Point well taken. But what if it was the same Joss cue that they put decals on?

Interesting question measureman. I have always been told that 90 % of playing good is mental and this is a good example. Yes it would be the same cue and would in all probability play exactly the same but if most players new it was a decal cue I bet they would not shoot as good with it. Being proud of a cue is all it takes sometimes to gain confidence with it and shoot better.

Good example. But for me the same can be done with true inlays (talking about cues now :) )

In fact my own cue has more inlay work than I typically care for, but I got a good deal on it and like the way it plays so I decided to keep it. If I were to purchase new cue it wouldnt have as much detail as my current player does.

As far as Tats, I knew what you meant, and sometimes trashy can be fun LOL.

Your question has some holes in it, why do you think that decal cues were made in the first place?

It is really pretty simple, to hide what is under the decal. In most cases when companies use a black stain, dark brown stain, or a decal it is designed to cover up wood that is substandard in appearance.

Around a year ago I had a customer bring in a decal cue that had the hell knocked out of it, and they wanted the cue refinished. The decals could not be saved due to all the damage to the finish and the decals themselves. So I had to take the cue down to bare wood, the wood under that decal was some of worst looking wood I have ever seen used in a cue. In another case I had a low end Predator cue brought in for the same reason, and again the finish was so badly damaged that the black stain was gone on half the cue. When I removed the remaining stain the maple benneth it was just like what I encountered in the decal cue.

I have had aroiund 5 or 6 cues over the years like the two I listed above and every single one had similar nasty looking Maple either under the decal or the stain. This is done in my opinion so that materials that can be used for nothing else are not wasted which in the old days they would been. Now I have no problem with these people making money, that is what anyone in business is trying to do. But to me a decal cue is nothing but a cheap low end cue designed to use materials that can not be used for anything else do to their astetic appel.

So, to compare decals to any cue that is plain jane with a nice piece of wood is an unfair comparison.

Please stop with generalizatios.

And then Manwon there are many overlay cues with great wood underneath and tasteful overlay designs.

I have a bunch of tattoos myself, some I like and some I might do some cover up work on as I am older then when I got them. Here is one lady that I think her tattoo does not take away from her at all, what do you guys think?

Personally, I hate painted or Decal cues for one reason.

They chip, crack, and wear of the finish. My current player is a £25 cue that I rescued from the bin. I took a blow torch to the paint and scraped off all the 'fake' that was concealing the sh1tty wood underneath.

The cues is surprisingly becoming my new player despite all of its hideous looks. It hits well and feels better in the hand after about 1hr on the lathe and some 80/400/1400 grit paper.

ok, loosing my way a little here:sorry:. What I guess i'm saying is that decals are ok in the short term but they are no substitute for real, honest materials. I'd prefer using an ugly piece of wood knowing that it wont chip rather than a decal defiled POS that is gonna flake away anyway. Might as well do what i did and remove the crap and re-finish the wood with some oil or wax for a natural feel.

...rant over
