Earl is a complex man. Whatever his reasons are for playing, the love of the fans doesn't seem to be one of them.
Is it just me or does it seem like when Earl is winning, everybody is with him, but when he loses, and acts badly, Earl haters come out of the woodwork.
I've been right there...in his corner...getting ripped by him verbally for no apparent reason, but I never felt like I had the grounds to speak ill of the man. Maybe that is my problem but I prefer to hold my judgement. I have no idea what being a 5 time champion or not being able to find an even money game anywhere on the planet feels like. I'm so far removed from his level of talent that I just can't understand the man.
Whatever I feel, it's not resentment, pitty or disappointment at his "lack of class." Earl was never a model of good behavior in my experience. He has shown great generosity and reverence for the game, but on the table he has always been fiery and unpredictable.
In the middle 80's, at the Akron Open, and old timer exclaimed of Earl: "He'd complain if they hung him with a new rope." So I say today, other than his winning championships, what has changed?
