Interesting Early Joss Box Cue

Thanks Bill Grassley at Cornerstone for another great find. I bought this one in June and thought I should share some pics. The stylized lettering in the "JOSS" name makes me think it is an early cue when Bill Stroud worked with Dan Janes.

Nice cue and a great find!
I've never seen it done like that where the boxes are going into/under the wrap and not floating on the forearm.

Dan Janes did a pair for Nick Varner and his girlfriend many years ago. Other than that set, I had never seen the concept either. When this cue turned up, in ivory no less, I had to buy it.

Due some time this year is a Richard Chudy box cue in this style. I discussed the concept with him and he agreed to do a retro design. This style is uncommon, but as you can see, it has been around for years.

Cheers to Dan Janes and Bill Stroud.

Strange that they changed the veneer order on cue.

Ken

Just when I think I have noticed all...along comes someone truly observant.

My thinking about the butt sleeve has been around the inlay, not the veneers. We have seen this stepped diamond form in many Joss cues over the years. Jim Rempe once told me that he sketched it for Dan Janes on a cocktail napkin. I haven't shown this cue to Jim yet but I am hoping he recognizes it and has a story.

At least the colors speak to my Italian heritage

i believe this cue was done after Bill Stroud left

Don

I spoke about early Joss identification with Bill Stroud some years ago when I mistakenly credited him for building one of Danny's cues. What I was told then is that if the "J" in the JOSS name is angled rather than block printed, then it is a Stroud era cue. The ringwork looks more modern era to me though. You may be right after all.

I would love to hear from any Joss specialists about this. I am a big fan of both Bill and Dan's work, but would hate to confuse the two.

Here is the photo of the printing on the cue's butt cap. The J is itallic rather than block printed like the letter S.

Such a great looking cue.
Tough to find the box cues when there is such a demand for them.
Good thing there are friends looking out for you.

Hope to see you next week.

JOSS box cue

Myron, i might have a couple you would like also. some eye candy at U S OPEN. stop by & visit don aka Sureman Cues

To me, personally, box cues belong to a very-very close group of cues that show the real class that one good maker / designer can gain from a cue, using it as a canvas. What I mean is that when I saw that picture of the cue's butt sleeve hanging out of that case, it was everything I look for in a cue. Of course, there are other favourites as well, but - like I said - these box cues are just fantastic.

Very-very nice find that reflects good taste,
Congrats!

Your cue was made 1968-1972 when they were together. I have 5 68-72 and 1 73 hoppe Joss cue In 1973 the J is vertical not italic. That's a nice one., Bob

Post a couple pics, I'd like to see what gems you have hidden. Thanks.

You Are Correct........

Gian,

Bill Stroud has mentioned to me more than once over the years that he did the JOSS script slanted if he was involved in a particular cue, vertical script was Dan.

I own the box cue that Jim Rempe had them build, the one that was the first time they ever did the stairstep Native American design in the buttsleeve. They sat down after Jim won a major tournament (without looking it up, I think 1970) and the design was drawn on the back of a statement of some sort. I have a copy of the (bank?):o statement in my file that goes along with the cue. I bought the Rempe box cue in 1997 and had Bill refinish the cue for me.

I am fairly certain I remember a Sigel cue by JOSS that had the boxes come out of the wrap in the forearm also. It was the first time I saw this done, and liked it a lot. :)

You`ve got one to be proud of and enjoy for a long, long time.

Take care,

Will

Gian,

I had fun for over an hour going through my entire files of John Wright photos from his mailings. I have ALL of them, categorized by date in sequence. Several large photo albums. I thought I had seen the box cue Sigel had owned for sale in John`s pictures......I was wrong :o:o....... but had fun anyway!

But then, I found a couple of pictures of Mike Sigel playing with his box cue that has the boxes coming forward out of the wrap!!! Go to Bill Porter`s pictures of the 1982 Dayton 9 Ball Open, and go to picture # 43 of 50. Or search by "Sigel" once in the photos. Then expand the photo using the X3 enlarger option..........Voila! :grin-square:.............Sigel playing with his box cue. Easily seen. At first I thought it might be your cue, but his was different between the boxes. A very close twin to your cue.

Take care,

Will Prout
