mezz cues gaining popularity in the states???

anyone think that mezz cues are going to finally get some respect in the states now that mika won the us open 2 years in a row using one?

i've been using one off and on for years and nobody in the states seems to have heard of them. they play great but they're just not respected state side like they are over seas. even with all the really strong/popular players using them...mika/jasin ouschan/ sarah rousey..etc

what do you guys think?
 
I don't see why not. They are a fine production cue brand (e.g. Schon and J. Pechauer), and have good service here in the states (Caroline Pao and Mika are Mezz USA).

The first one I saw was a cue that Go Takami was using [6+ years ago(?)], and maybe Kunihiko Takahashi (about 3-4 years ago) had one also. If I remember right, Go let me check his cue out. Looked pretty cool - unique design and well constructed.

Price may be the only thing to slow them down.
 
Ive always thought Mezz cues were highly regarded in the states but I play with a lot of asians who know Mezz very well, so I guess that explains it.

I think they are going to become even more popular in the states, especially with the job Mika and Caroline are doing.
They play well, look good and sponsor popular players that most of the time present themselves in a professional manner.

plus isnt it true that all things Japanese are superior? :wink:

I think Mika, like Efren once similarly did, could pull a cue off a house rack and win a tournament. Mezz, or any other cue for that matter, are not magic wands. The magic is in the skills, knowledge, and mental fortitude of each professional player, and obviously Mika is heavily endowed with these qualities. JMHO.

its not the cue its the player. I think most players know that. I dont think anyones gonna run out and buy a cue just cause mika won the open with it.

maybe you guys that're posting comments like this are taking my post too literally. i realize people aren't mindless drones.

you guys are talking like it doesn't matter at all. i'm just asking if mezz cues are finally going to get the respect they deserve for making a quality product

Mezz sponsors Mika + I don't like Mika = Will Never by a Mezz cue

My next cue will be a custom cue.

jcurry swears he shoots better with his Mezz, I just smile and shake my head. :). He also just got his hair cut just like Mika and wears all black now. :grin:

You would be surprised. You think they didnt run out and buy a Cuetec becuase of Earl and Allison?

When i used to hang out in a pool room, newbies would come in looking for a Cuetec about 50% of the time and were talked out of them by the Houseman. Im sure that was happening all over and if the housemen didnt do that, Cuetec would be twice as big.
 
Mezz cues are really great cues...........

The only production cue I own is a Mezz. It's very well made and that tight fitting joint they make really makes for a solid hit. Caroline special ordered me a 30 inch ob-2 fitted to my Mezz with the miki joint. Only person in the world she knows of that has it so far :rolleyes:

Yes but all those newbies probably saw alot of commercials for cuetec also. There are at least 3 on every morning when espn shows womens pool. Mezz not so much. The people who know mika won back to back opens with a mezz are already poolplayers and not as likely to run out and buy a cue just caus he won a tourney with it.


And like no stroke said, Mika aint exactly the most likable guy in pool. I wont elaborate on my personal feeling on mika ill just say that id rather buy something allison or earl are sellling any day of the week.

Yes, I like my new Mezz. I find it to be very consistent. I updated my signature just for you. :wink:
 
I hit with one in Valley Forge. Yes, Mika can do wonderful things with one, but Mika could shoot with a broomstick. Very stiff hit and I didn't like the circumference of the handle, nor the balance. Just personal preference.

I had one. It was the ZZ-09 model and it was a fine player. Actually, I was a bit skeptical cause I had never heard of it before.

I played it, and it was unbelieveably solid. I honestly though it was too good to be true, so I gave it up...... to Buddy Hall of all people! was supposed to give me lessons to the full value of the cue and his hustlin a$$ never did make good on his end of the deal!:mad:

Buddy actually had never heard of the Mezz when I first got it. He though it was a cheap 'Miz' cue from Taiwan. He played it and he though it was actually too stiff. He turned right around and sold it for $100 less than what I paid for it. He did that in the pool hall until he wore out his welcome.

Buddy actually had never heard of the Mezz when I first got it. He though it was a cheap 'Miz' cue from Taiwan. He played it and he though it was actually too stiff. He turned right around and sold it for $100 less than what I paid for it. He did that in the pool hall until he wore out his welcome.

Mezz cues are the best of the production cues, IMO. I have played with Caroline's cue & it's wonderful. She has an "off the shelf" model cue, nothing custom. I very rarely play with cues, production or custom, that I say to myself, "I can't build a better playing cue than this". But that's how I feel about her cue. I was intrigued & surprised, because it wasn't just banging a couple of balls. I played a few sets with it and liked it every shot. I picked up every cue in the booth & they all felt the same. One thing that REALLY surprised me was the shaft wood. It was as good as shaft wood gets, literally. I don't know where Mezz is getting their wood from but they are getting the best stuff. Every shaft in the booth was top grade, nothing questionable.

Anyway, my point is that Mezz gets my respect. I don't care much for production cues in general. In fact, besides the new OB break shafts, which I found to be a pretty awesome playing shaft, the only production cue I REALLY like is Mezz. Every one I tried felt like there was a cuemaker on the other end who genuinely put his/her heart into making sure the cue was comfortable & easy to play with. That's something unheard of with production cues, and moderately rare in custom cues. Of course, this is all my opinion.

As I remember, it was not a thin as my robinson, nor as thick as a mcd or my Bluegrass. I suppose I'm used to a rear weighted cue, so the Mezz didn't help things any. At 19 oz, it felt light and hit like a brick. Of course, Mika steps up, busts the crap out of the cue and makes the cue ball dance. The cue was just not my cup of tea. If you have the stroke for it, I'd think its worth investigating. Many others that hit with it that day had success with it.

I think this might be the problem. Before I met you (Poolplayer2093) and bought your Mezz, I called a very well- respected, knowledgable person and asked what they thought of Mezz's. He said that it was a cheap production cue from either Taiwan or Korea.

Maybe there's another company with a similarly named cue? (I couldn't find Miz or Mizz on Google.)

Maybe there's a bad rumor going around?

I don't know, but I do love my Mezz, I think it hits fine, and having the extension is very helpful when you're short. The alternative of sending away my cue for a stretch extension modification like Ito's was just out of the question for the time and money.

Mika's success has nothing to do with the equipment he uses.
It would be the same result regardless of what cue he is using.
A cue does not make you play better.
