Alleged padding of B&R's in the UPL tourney?? WTF?

:mad: I was just in the chat room watching this fabulous tourney that Corey's UPL is putting on, and there's been some serious discussion @ alleged padding of scores. Other than this, word seems very positive @ this tourney and unique format. :thumbup:

In case you didn't know, players advance - based on among other things - the # of B&R's each has. When a match is over, the players mark scoresheets and turn them in.

On one match, there's been much scuttlebutt that the 2 players may have padded their # of B&R's.

One of the pros, not one in question, apparently touched on this while he was in the booth.

If I missed the cut because someone cheated, I'd be one hot SOB.

If this is true, I hope the truth comes out and there's consequences.

On site spectators have spoken up from what I hear and stated there were about 3 B&R's in the 15 game match. However, word from one guy that saw the erasered up scoresheet, each player recorded five with two additional ones recorded but not in the total!!!

Again, these are allegations, but the prevailing wind is gale force.

As soon as I saw your post I knew exactly which two players you were talking about. Extra break and runs not only adds to your points, but subtracts games you played in when you are dividing your points by number of games played to get your average. It gives a HUGE advantage! If they really did cheat, it corrupts the entire tournament because it affected who played who after the fact. I know of one person who missed the cut by one place, and is out of the money. He deserved to still be in it. That really ticks me off!!

When i asked said shall remain nameless pro in the booth if the B&R was how they padded it, i knew that's how they did it.

Let me tell you something, people are only as honest as their options.

Sure you have these 2 that were scrutinized, but i can guarantee you that as soon as word got out, that more people ended up doing it and had the foresight to know they were going to do it before hand, and not destroy the paper with erasers trying to do it after the fact.

ALSO, i can guarantee you that if one pro is playing his buddy or road partner, and he is definitely IN the cut already, that it wouldn't be that odd to toss his buddy a couple of games, so that they BOTH make the cut.

I've seen it happen first hand in round robins too many times, i highly doubt that it would be any different here.

As for the people who are going to get all bent out of shape because they don't like me lumping them in with the cheaters and want me to believe that every single pool player is a saint.

It's quite simple.

Expose the cheaters and forfeit them.

If the people running the tournament can't do that, or players aren't willing to rat out fellow players that they know are doing it, then EVERYONE is guilty and it taints the face of pool yet again.

Toss them out, and BAN THEN from everything.

TAKE ACTION for once.
Get rid of the scum so the game can stand alone as something you are proud of, and not something to be ashamed of.

But, if i know pool players, if the ones who cheated, got away with it, they don't give a crap if they weren't caught.

If it was my tournament, i might just forfeit everyone and cancel it, and let the honest pool players beat the living crap out of the cheaters that ruined it for them so that they might learn something.

There's always some clown who has to ruin it for every one of the honest guys.

They do nothing but bring the game down.

Yet people still wonder why we can't find a serious sponsor for pool. It is a shame that the players do it and the TD lets them. PU.

There was a pro golfer who got caught moving his marker on the greens closer to the hole with his Ping Putter. He was thrown off the tour immediately. It was permanent as far as i know -perhaps he could reapply after a few years but he never played a Pro Event again. He was House Pro at Westchester Country club but i cant remember his name.
Anyway -Obvious cheating and you're gone. Thats the only way to do it.

This would be a fine time to make an example of a couple people early on if the cheating occurred and is proven. The catch is knowing something and proving it is two different things. As an employer I had two rules about drinking and drugs. You had to come to work in shape to work and using anything on the job was a firing offense, no warnings no debate. However, I had to know beyond any doubt that they had did something to fire them. The same thing applies here, does anyone have a level of proof needed to bar these people from a decent paying series of events?

There is another issue too, if the system is this easy to game it simply isn't going to work. How do you prevent gaming the system by people who plan it in advance instead of after the fact as seems possible happened here? I like the idea of a handful of volunteer score keepers but they may not see the whole match or of course they could be pard's or backers of the players. Seems better than just needing two people in collusion though.

Without an official or three at every table it seems there are always ways to cheat. Video has gotten reasonable enough now that I would think that shooting video of every table might be practical. If no questions arise, the video is forgotten. If questions do arise, check the video. Broadcast quality video wouldn't be needed, just a bit better than security cameras in stores.

I don't really know the answers, every time pool takes one step forward somebody seems to help it take two steps back.

ask for spectators to also record the scores and compare both players score sheets with the volunteers...

When you start using a round robin format, you open up the chance for a little buddy work. Everyone knows poolplayers are notorious for working a system to get an advantage at the fast buck. That was obvious when the $500 bonus was offered for anyone who banked in an 8-ball, in KT's tourney. I've seen the finagling of scores at round robin events before. It will happen again.

My post was humorous, relevant, and analogous to the situation, and anyone who is not prone to knee jerk, spasmodic reactions took it as such.

Your problem is the searing burn of truth you felt from it, and felt you needed to respond in your typical anti-social behavior.
