I know that there are certain areas in the country that play certain games more that others. I would like your opinions on where Straight pool is played the most. I have a feeling that its some parts of the midwest and the east coast. Can anyone tell me if I am wrong on that and any other places. If you can be specific it wouldbe great ifnot just a general area,. Let me know, thanks all.

I learned to play by playing straight pool in New Jersey in the 60's.
It was the main game for gambling. Seldom saw 9 ball played.

Yea, around here in the PA/NY/NJ area.....you can't hardly spit without hitting a hundred ball runner! :)

well it's not like that any more, BUT.....if you wanna find a 40/60/100 ball runners....it only takes a phone call.

Straight Pool

Northeast and Central PA still has a lot of straight pool players. Used to be the game of choice until I'd say the early to mid-1980's when 9-ball became the main game. Still today though, at Ashland Billiards in Ashland, PA, that's pretty much all that you'll see being played. Once in a while you'll see a 9-ball game, but not often. There are a few hundred ball runners in the room and Dave Daya plays there a few times a week.

gonna have to add CT to the NE region. 8 out of 11 tables filled with 14.1 last night at pool table magic. on a normal saturday night scattered in between the bangers are one or two tables with either a match or practice going on.

My impression is that there are a decent number of straight pool players in the Chicago area. Red Shoes billiards in Alsip (near Midway airport) has a straight pool league. Not sure how many guys play in it, but I know that there are some strong players.

We have 20 players in the straight pool league at Red Shoes Billiards in Alsip, Illinois. The two top players in the league have run 100 before. This league has been going on ten or more years. It started as sort of an offshoot of the Illinois Billiard Club's Straight Pool League.

The Illinois Billiard Club in in the middle of it's 36th year of Straight Pool Leagues. We have one on Tuesday and one on Thursday, totaling 26 players.
There is a bit of an overlap with the players at Red Shoes. The Thursday night league has one who has run 100, 3 or 4 whose high runs are in the 70s or above, a few 50 ball runners and a bunch of guys who may run from 20-40 any given night.

There are also tournaments at Red Shoes and there used to be a league up North in Grayslake Illinois with an occasional tournament up there.

WOW, it seems that its the East coast and not so much the midwest/

That is certainly my impression. They have a very strong tradition of 14.1 out there and a lot of the younger players learned from some of the best.

Definitely the NorthEast, NY, NJ, PA, CT. Not sure about New England above Connecticut.
