Karen Corr's Creative Safety Play

During a recent (Fall 2009) WPBA 9B tournament, Karen Corr found herself straight in on the 6 ball with no reasonable way to progress to the 7 ball. She responded with one of the most courageous, well-played safeties I've ever seen. I doubt very few players could THINK of this safety let alone EXECUTE it. A slight error would be disasterous!

Sorry for the ghetto recording, but I don't have my DVR tied to my computer yet. :o

I saw Karen do another safety that I'd never seen before. The object ball was close to the head rail and she was hooked. She kicked off the side rail to roll up and just knock the object ball to the cushion, leaving the cue ball almost frozen to it and straight out. Most players would shoot the shot at speed and try to get separation. The "smother" safety -- cue ball nearly frozen to the next ball -- is quite effective at snooker which I suspect is where she got it.

Most courageous? I disagree (respectfully, I know how you WPBA fanatics can get...LOL)
She had some angle to draw off that six, OR she could have played off the rail, which would have been more courageous, IMO.

Oddly enough, I don't even agree with playing safe in that situation.

She had a fortunate result, but it's the best that could have come from that option. It's an easy kick for her opponent, so much so that Karen will be lucky to even have a shot when she returns to the table next.

You gotta be REALLY confident in your cue ball control to pull off a safety like that! Kudo's to Karen!

that's a great shot as far as i'm concerned. it tilted the chances of winning the rack in her favor. even if she made the six there's no way to get any decent shape on the seven, and at that point the percentages would be out of her favor so why not play the safe and make the opponent shoot the small percentage hero shot?!

I think I would try to get out from there. She hit the safety about as well as it could possibly be hit, but still left an easy return safety (from behind a computer screen of course).

CueTable Help

Letting a good player back to the table when you have a reasonable chance for an out is never a good thing. I think the ticky on the 6 was available and fairly reasonable percentage getting to the 7. In either case, I'm interested in what happens next.

She shot the wrong shot in my opinion. Your giving your opponent a chance at the table to get lucky and turn things way around. She had a bit of angle and could of done something with the 7 and probably go 2 rails out with top right english. You would never see a top male player refuse that shot to a safety.

Atleast make the 6 and if you have nothing on the 7 play a safety. If she can play safe like that with the 6 why not with the 7 if things go wrong. The tables are with new cloth and huge pockets, she could of forced that ball with some english.

If I saw my opponent do this I would be happy that I'm even getting to the table with the chance to jump or do something to get lucky. Not shooting that shot shows a lot of weakness.

that was a difficult play.....
but imo the saftey there, was just as tuff, as it would have been to make the 6 and force the cueball out to the middle of the table....
but to do this you have to hit the 6 real good (to me there looks to be enuff angle to beable to force the cuball out to the middle with draw or follow either way....most players that try the shot either rattle the 6 or end up scratching and depending on how tight the table is and how strait the shot really is(but it looks to me like there is a pretty good angle to cheat on this shot)....playing safe was smart but if she wouldhve left her opponent the window to make the 6 then that shot would have been retarded.

kindof like Bill Bellachek going for it on 4 th down vs the Colts.

honestly she didnt have to force anything really she could have rolled up and left herself long and made the 7 pretty easily as long as the cueball is off the rail. she must not have been confident with her offence at the table that game. and if the 6 is off the rail a quarter inch or so just make the shot hitting the cueball to the rail first to create more angle for yourself

I wish the video went a bit longer to see what her opponent ended up getting out of that kick. I wouldn't be surprised if Karen got the worse of it.

i always wondered about the tables that the ladies play on....are they lowered so that they have a easier time reaching shots being alot of woman players are like 5 foot 2....and are the pockets bigger than the tables that the men might play on?

Yeah there lowered by 6inch's and 12 if Sarah is on the TV table lol :grin-square:

And I only know there buckets because a good friend of mine plays at every WPBA event, and new cloth makes the ball slop in easier aswell.

LOL i wondered because im 5'8 and a half with proportionate to on the long side arms, and i have a hard time reaching alot of shots on a 9 footer.....and i watch these girls that are barely 5 foot with little short arms and it seems like they reach everything pretty easy.....

i know i get pissed when jumping on a 9 footer how big my cant reach the shot without a crutch zone is. ill play what i think is perfect shape just to end up pissed off that im using the crutch or stretched out aukward....i dont get to play on a 9 footer much....but when i do get a chance it takes me about 5 games to get adjusted, to how to play shape so i can reach

I was only kidding man, they don't lower the tables . Although those Asian girls wear like high heels all the time, so i'm sure that helps a bit.

lol ,
well they should lower the table 6 inches, specially when the girls got there cleavage shirts on.:grin-square:

"get down nice and low sweethearts"
kindof like when i have a party i leave the beer on the bottom shelf so all the girls have to bend over farther to get one....its awsome:wink:

I would have made it and tried to run out which is why I'm a banger and she is a champion.

Spot on. I did play once in a local tournament and my opponent got himself in the same situation. He absolutely stunned me by jacking up and shooting a 180 degree masse. He made in the object ball rail-first and sent the cue ball down-table for perfect position.

Without question it was an awesome shot but I can't imagine any Pro anywhere attempting it in a serious game. (Well, maybe Earl Strickland might!)
