I hear both sides of this issue...
Recently I was told that a snooker cue, for 6x12 play is shorter than a pool cue"
I was told Efren Plays with a 62- 64 inch cue"
A friend once told me that Buddy Hall played his very best with a 57 inch cue"
A cue-maker stated that shorter cues play better"
I would like to hear more here,
THANK YOU

This has been discussed a few times. I am sure that you can find a lot of threads on it using the search.

Jimmy Reid does a good explanation in his DVD series. The series are worth the money and Jimmy could use the help at this time.

I would try to explain it but bascially it is all a matter of choice. I think that the so call standard length can be blamed on Mosconi.

About 4 hours ago I set a 54" and a 60" cue on my pool table. I put a cue ball and object ball in front of them. I'm still waiting to see which cue plays better....SPF=randyg

At one time I had an old Palmer with 6 shafts(57.5", 2 58's,58.5,59,61). The longer shafts felt natural and correct, but the few times I used the 57.5", I played better. The longer the shaft, the more I missed. Of course that's just me, but I firmly believe that slightly shorter cues play better. Short guys, imho, need longer cues more so than tall guys.

wow

I am 6'2" and have played with a 64" cue for years. No one at the time I bought mine made them and now they are becoming quite common. How can anyone believe that someone 5'2" should play with the same length cue as some one 6'6"?? Most other sports such as golf, tennis and baseball accomodate size. Maybe it is because we are still viewed as a "game" instead of the sport we actually are. A taller player with a short cue has to grab the cue at the end to get his forearm anywhere near vertical at contact. That puts him as far as possible from the balance point of the cue. With a correctly sized cue, one's hand is more toward the middle of the wrap and closer to the balance point. Remember the old Mosconi books we read as kids that stated your hand should be about 6" behind the balance point to stroke properly?? This is a no-brainer, if you are 5'10" or over and try a correctly sized cue, you will never go back.

When this snow is over my 61 incher challenges the winner.

I had a custom at 54 3/4" and it played sweet, perfect on a bar box. On a big table you would find yourself dropping your elbow more to get the distance for the shot.

I like my cues at 57 1/2" I've played with longer cues and shorter and 57-58 is pretty much what I like. If I played with a longer cue I would rather the length come from the butt than the shaft, but thats just what I like.

And I bet neither one has missed a ball yet!!

Well put Randy....

The cue doesn't play the game at all. If a player can beat you with a 60" cue...he/she is going to beat you with the 54" too.

I have a 57.5 inch Josswest that I love. I'm 5'10'' but I don't have much of a wing span so it feels nice. I'm not as accurate with longer cue for some reason.

Ok then would one of the naysayers explain why when I am in my stance and from my bridge to my back arm (at 90 degrees) is 53.5 inches...with the Fanelli I have which is a 57.5 I cant stroke at all....everything is a poke....with my old helmstetter with a 30" OB1 I can at least stroke it comes in at 59.5...

Why would I not want a longer cue? I understand that a good player can play with a house cue....but we never see them do it now do we?

The best tool for the job....

Incidentally I have several longer cues coming ranging from 60 to 62

I hate to use the bridge/rake so I would like to get a cue extender for shots down the far end of the table. I also don't like to hit the wall with the butt of the cue when I have to bridge on the rail.
