I feel so dumb for asking this.. I just got a new McDermott cue, and its my first cue. I've always played with house cues, so i never seen a tip without chalk on it..

Are new tips supposed to look like this? It almost looks like the tip was ripped off.. Then again i've never seen a new tip before

That would be a G-core shaft with a Tiger Everest tip. So, yes, it has a tip on it. Just chalk the top, and you're ready to play.

Thats definately the tip. Put some chalk on it, and it will look a little more familiar.

Thanks for the replies :) I feel relieved

If you don't know, you should always ask. I sold a cue with joint protectors at a Gun and Knife show to a guy who just loved the look of the cue. He came back to the booth about half an hour later and asked me "how the hell do you put it together?" He didn't realize it had joint protectors, and told me he thought at first it was magnetic!

nfs2,

The replies are accurate. You indeed have a tip, it's a Tiger Everest tip and it's attached to a G-core shaft.
What hasn't yet been mentioned is that the 'red' layer is your replacement indicator. When you've worn the tip down to the red layer, it's time to start thinking about replacing the tip.

Enjoy your new cue.

now that would have been funny to hear...talk about a head scratcher lol:grin:

So which cue did you get?

I'm in the process of getting my first cue also but with so many choices I don't know which one to pick.

Nothing fancy, but i liked the contrast of maple on rosewood.

That happens more often than you would think.

That happens more often than you would think.

People make all kinds of mistakes which people who do something everyday are amazed at.

I've seen people want a one door car (A coupe with a single door on each side.) a two door (A sedan with two doors on each side.) and my all time favorite ... 25 +/- years ago I worked in an Oldsmobile - Toyota - Jaguar - MG - Triumph - Bertone - Pininfarina dealership. A long time Olds customer called me and wanted a new Totota Tercel for their grand daughter who was graduating from college. They wanted it with air and a "standard" transmission. I gave them a price on an in stock car which they agreed to and they said they would be down within the hour with a check.

When they saw a clutch pedal they recoiled in horror ... they had expected the car would have the "standard" transmission just like every new GM car they had owned for the last 20+ years had been equipped with.

In business you just learn to grin and bear it sometimes.

That could be like the golf club swing training aid. If you don't stroke the cue right, it comes apart. lol...
