Looking for an upscale room in San Francisco

Going to San Fransisco in a couple of weeks on business and I am looking for recommendations on good places to play. I am looking for an upscale room (but not gay, please), someplace where I can bring my wife and we can relax without getting hassled, hustled, or hearing too many F bombs.

I don't gamble. I would like good 9-foot tables. I don't mind paying higher-than-average hourly rates if the room is nice. Good food, beer and music are a plus, but not necessary.

When I went to Denver a few months ago, several forum members recommended the Wynkoop Brewery, and that place was exactly what I was looking for. I am hoping you guys can steer me in the right direction again.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

The only pool place I know of is Family Billiards on Geary Blvd. near Masonic.
It's not exactly "upscale" but it's clean and well-kept. It's owned by a pool player, Delbert Wong. There might be some small upscale place downtown, but I don't know if they exist anymore. Other than Family, the California Billiard Club is about the nicest around the Bay Area. It's in Mountain View, about a 40- minute drive south of San Francisco. I recommend you check it out, if transportation is not a problem.

Family is the best for pool Monday and Thursday night is tournament night. Every last Monday and Thursday on the month is the big ones where all the dogs come out. I highly recommend going to a tournament. Billy Palmer.. Gene Ventura... Bobby Hunter.. Jason Williams.. Michelle Rakin.. Gobbs of great players.

Ernesto Domignez did the front five tables with 4" pockets!!! Real mouse holes i tell.. Toughest tournament on the west coast ;)

The BEST San Francisco has to offer, and honestly the COST for a Square Foot of Dirt in the City by the Bay is so high, I m surprised there is any Pool Rooms.
 
Isn't Bob Jewett part owner of the San Francisco Billiard Academy? I'm not sure if that is in a pool room or not but If Bob has his name on it, I would imagine it is of the highest quality.

Jillians in the Sony Metreon at Mission and 4th (roughly), which is down town. It is mostly a sports/yuppie bar, but it does have about 10 9-foot tables. I have never seen anyone there who can play a lick.

Family is reasonable as far as a pool room goes, but not upscale. If you can get down the Peninsula to Mountain View, try Shoreline or the California Billiard Club. In the East Bay try The Broken Rack in Emeryville.

Chalker's would have been the ticket.

Bob is right on the nose. Definitely Jillians would be the most 'upscale' room in the city. The Broken Rack in Emeryville would be 2nd on the list.

I second this. Broken Rack does a Tuesday tournament, must join USPPA ($20 a year) then $15 entry, although I have not been there in about a year so it could have changed but I doubt it.

They have a full kitchen and good food, round dining tables and bar area, smoking room, lots of pool tables, and the atmosphere is nice. A cab ride from SF, over the bay bridge, and into Emeryville to the Broken Rack will probably run $30-$50 (I am guessing) in about 15 minutes no traffic.

There are a lot of good players that come in for the tourney, not sure how many hang around daily, seems to be a lot of 1pkt going on.

You should have no problem going there and not getting bothered, having good food and drinks, pretty decent service, a decent 9ft table, and not stand out wearing business or dress attire.

If you are interested in meeting up for an hour or two for some games PM me, if I am in the area I will buy you and your wife a beer or glass of wine.
 
Jillians is the fancy one but the tables are all small. No real serious players. Onne afternoon, played some small money games and cards with some mexicans and filipinos who seemed to be waiting for somebody to show up but moved out of frisco 2years ago so thngs might have changed

You don't gamble? why not just hit up a coffee shop or something then. you gotta bet something otherwise you might as well be twirling your thumbs.

i like that place but the pockets are a little too big and the rates are kind of high for a poor boy like me

check out the broken rack (emeryville) or family billiards (SF)

I hope your seriously joking about Jillian's as a decent place to play. When i first went into Jillian's in 2001 (right near my work) the tables were covered in Shag carpet... They were almost all unlevel and had wacky rolls... The service was ok but the food was awful..

Go to any hall mentioned but Jillian's.. Its was absolute gash 9 years ago and probably still is.
