Pool Terminology

stun

Stun, english, spin, and roll. Explain the difference between those 4 things. Explain why draw and force follow are not english.

Someone came up with a good glossary of pool hall lingo if anyone can remember where it is. Might be a good read from some ideas.

My favorite misconception is how the cloth is often referred to as "the felt". I'm assuming this came from casino tables which actually are made of felt and resemble the look and feel of a pool table. Pool tables always use woven wool.

The kitchen is one of my favorite terms -- has a great history behind it. Understanding the strings, the spot, and the box would be useful for any beginner.

Deflection, Cue ball deflects (squirts), cue stick deflects off the cue ball and the recent trend to correctly identify cb deflection as cue ball squirt. Might as well throw in cb swerve.

Joe T, amazed at how many students come to me already owning low squirt cues but don't even know why they bought them?

Thanks, that's a great one that I would have forgotten about.

My next article for PoolDawg is going to be aimed at demystifying pool terminology for people who are new to the game (articles are located here.)

What do you think are some of the terms that confuse newbies?

Thanks for your help,
Liz

Pool hall lingo, betting terminology. A lot of the physics stuff is pretty easy to find, but "weight", giving somebody the "7 out", what the hell a nit is, are a lot harder to find. I had to search far and wide as a newbie to even keep up with some of the conversations that fly around in here.

Stuff like this is perfect, wish I had seen this post before I posted mine.

Shark. Everyone thinks a shark is a guy who plays ana amazing game of pool when its actually a cheap, distraction technique used by an opponent to get you off your game.

The gambling stuff is what is fun and most confusing (I've even had to explain it to Mike over at PoolDawg) but I am trying to stay away from the topic of gambling for these articles. I can say handicapping I guess.

I will look at the compendia (word of the day, look it up!)

Felted wool is made by matting the fibers together, not weaving.

don't forget the guys (like me) who make up words on the spot.

some faves i created;

duckmanship= one who plays good or bad safeties.

spinage = another word for english, evolves to spinagemanship which is one who applies english good or bad.:grin-square:

I was hoping to get a couple of these along the way, and maybe some funny stories, thanks :)
