WPBA at Hardtimes this Friday 19th -Sunday

To my understanding, top 4 girls in each flight will advance to a double elimination board of 32. Top nine get their cards. At least thats how I understand how it works.

OK folks, where are those updates? I know there's a lot of pool being played and the only score we got is Chang over Andoni - and that was from yesterday.

I've been at home, sick as a dog, waiting to hear the leatest scoop. My dial-up service won't allow me to see the stream and I'm going nuts. I don't wanna have to come out to Hard Times in this condition and spread this nasty cold to everyone in the room. So cough up those updates and no one gets infected.

The format is:

Stage 1: 8 groups of 8, with the top 4 girls with the highest percentages of games won advancing to Stage 2.

Stage 2: 8 groups of 4, with the top finisher of each group with the highest percentage advancing to the single elimination brackets.

Stage 3: Single elimination 8 person bracket, race to 9.

I wrote down a whole slew of scores and I hope to have a majority posted later tonight, unless someone yells at me for giving too much info or hanging around the boards too much......

Sorry, but I don't have any scores for any of them tonight. Maybe tomorrow, unless someone else posts them first.

The smart money is on the girl from Taiwan, Shu-Han Chang. She can definitely play some. Stacy (Novack) Hurst in her bracket is a seasoned player, with many WPBA events to her credit. That should be an interesting match.

i watched some of the matches on the stream.
no disrespect but they should not have played on that tight table.
i would rather watch them run out on a normal table.

The tournament side to Hardtimes Bellflower has always been known to be tight pockets and plays tougher than the standard setup tables on the other normal side behind the bleachers. Its been like that forever and I doubt they'd change that. The tournament side is also in better condition overall than the other side to Hardtimes.

I'm sure that it would be more fun to watch some run outs, but its a true test of skill when all the ladies were in the same boat to play on those tables against each other.

The tables in the tournament room at HT were done by Ernesto and are fast with tight pockets. There werre 4 tables outside with old cloth and play slower with wider pockets Chang and Chen played on these. They seem to have adapted to the tournament room well enough.

Several players had trouble with the tighter pockets. Most tables in CA have tight pockets. How about on the East Coast?

Not a lot of rooms with tight pockets out here LAMas, some rooms have 1 table set up for 1 pocket, but its rare to see any more than 1 table setup tight, in the northeast anyhow.

on the east you go to a pool room might have one or 2 tight tables.

I agree. Not very many good matches on that table. IMO tournament tables should all be the same size pockets (like 4 1/2") and play about the same speed. Action matches are different, you play on one table and you get time to figure out the table and they are usually "A" players or better. But in a tournament with a race to only 6 and mostly "C" and "B" players in the tournament it doesn't work well. Did all 64 players and then 32 players in the second round get to play on the the stream table the same amount of matches? I think not. Bad for most of the players and bad for the fans watching IMO.
I watched quite a bit of the stream and I would say it was 95/5 for they didn't belong on that table in the chat...but what do the pool playing fans know? Most of the 5% were in the booth. Johnnyt

Out here when you hear someone say "Ernesto-tight" tables, that means 4" pockets. There's a lot of good players out here who learned to play on this tough equipment. When they go somewhere else they always seem to do well. Wonder why?

Welcome to AZB Forum, Nicole. Is your avatar a picture of yourself or of the prettiest lady you could find ? Are you an accomplished pool player? You're allowed to brag.

For those not familiar with the Hard Times layout:

We played Stage 1 of the tournament on 24 tables. 10 of the tables are in the "tournament room" and the rest on the other side of the pool hall. The tournament room tables are all tighter and faster than the other tables. To try to make it as fair as possible, each round robin group was assigned 3 tables to play on for the entire round. So, we had to only get used to 3 tables. Some groups only played on the tight tables, and some groups only played on the other tables. But everyone in the group had to play on the same table. This was announced in our players meeting on Thursday night and no one objected.

The live streaming table just happens to be on one of the 10 tight tables.

In my opinion, this is as fair as they could be, and the players appreciate it.

Stage 2 is now being played only in the tournament room, so everyone is playing on the same tables.

We are grateful for the WPBA to put on this event for us, and also grateful for Hard Times for hosting the event. Its not easy to find a pool hall who has a lot of quality 9 foot tables and who are also willing to allow 64 women to come in and take over for 2-3 days and forgo their normal table time revenue for the weekend. We really do appreciate it.

If any of you fans/spectators know of any other pool hall in the country that has great equipment and willing to put up the prize fund and host the tournament for a weekend, I'm sure the WPBA would love to hear your suggestions for next year. We appreciate your support, too!

Yes that is a picture of me. I wouldn't call my self an accomplished pool player just learning as I go. As far as what my speed is I'm still working on beating the 6 ball ghost. Lol! (on tight pockets I haven't tried on buckets yet. Need to try that)
