The old dog ain't dead yet!

I knew there was going to be a post, soon as i checked the brackets and saw that Jay won several matches!

Nice job Jay, I am impressed

Top notch commentating too by the way, just need to brush up on your post match interviewing skillz and you'll be set

The good thought goes a long way towards winning the set. You obviously kept on believing!!

Now you KNOW you can do it!! :groucho:

I saw you practicing yesterday and I'm happy for you Jay.

After I lost my first match on the TAR table, everyone was quick to write me off. That was a triple tough table to play on, like playing on ice.

I went over to the loser's side and proceeded to win four in a row to get into the money. First was Tony Sardo of the famous Sardo family, creators of the Sardo rack. Won that one easily 5-1. Then I played Duane Jones a strong local player. He had me 4-1 down and somehow I came back to win 5-4.

Next up was Nick Hewko, a very good player who always cashes in Reno. I played my best match beating him 5-2. Now I faced Merv White a terrific shooter from the Northwest. He ran out the first two racks like water. I didn't give up and managed to pull out another 5-4 win.

My final match of the tourney was with Gabe Apollo an excellent young player from Nashville. I just ran out of gas after the previous three matches. Physically I felt fine, but mentally I was frazzled. I just couldn't seem to see the patterns and I made one mental blunder after another. I was still making balls, but getting out of line shot after shot. I lost badly 5-1, finishing 33-48 for $125. So I got back my entry fee but it was a moral victory. I proved to myself that I could still compete on this level if I prepared properly. I have been playing semi steadily since early January and my stroke feels good. You don't forget how to play pool. It's all in the arm and how smooth and uniform your stroke is.

This time I'm going to try to stay in stoke for a while. All it takes is finding a game every few days, and there's a million guys who don't think I can play anymore. I love the look on thier face when they find out how wrong they were. ;)

Taking advantage of their youth and inexperience Jay?

Great comeback Jay, way to go. Thats the one thing I dont like about some of these tournaments....they turn into endurance tests.

I have to get myself in better shape. More exercise and lose about fifteen pounds. It will be a challenge. The best players today are serious health nuts - Mika, Thorsten, Ralf, Shane etc.

As I think I recall overhearing you say to Glen Rogers at the last DCC, you have realized that even though you may have been several things in life, business man, pool room owner, etc., essentially, you are a POOL PLAYER. Right?

I am a pool player first! Everything else I've done comes after that. There's NOTHING I've ever done that's any harder than having to make the case nine ball from off the end rail. And I've made a lot of them in my life!

Congratulations on pulling out some great victories. (i'm not falling for that baloney you've been putting out for the last two years). The GingerBread Man knows how to shake and bake. :yeah:

Besides you can't be that old, especially if you are still creating new pool players. :D

Give Jalo a hug and a kiss from all of us.

I know darn well you are going to visit the pool rooms while you are there. Bring back some human interest stories about the personal lives of the great players of the Philippines.

JoeyA

Thank you my friend. I REALLY wish you could go with me. We'd have so much fun and get to play a lot of doubles Eight Ball on full size tables. Joey, we could clean up! ;)

It's a tough tournament when you win that many matches, play well, and still end up 33rd.
Some very good players from Denver have ended up 33rd in Reno.
You did well and got your entry fee back.
At least we're not having to coax you in off the ledge.
I know that feeling.

I was SO mad after that first match, and I was on the TAR table too. I KNEW I could play a lot better than that. And I did, for a few matches anyway.

Hey Old Dog,

Come visit me in Vegas and I'll give you the needle or gas, which ever you perfer.:p;)

good to see you playing Jay, :angry:Jay and I went to dinner the other night for 3 hours, man it was first class. We had alot to catch up on.

love ya buddy,

fatboy

Thank you my friend. You are one of the few people who have seen me play well the last year or so. How about that Bank Pool exhibition I put on with you and Max and Cotton? It felt good to see all the shots and just zing them in one after another.

I'll be spending lots of time in Vegas in May and June. First pool, then poker. I'm a double threat!

There's only one way you can do well in a tournament and that way is entering it. I rather play like a bum than sit on the sidelines watching.

Nice going Jay.

I only feel my age, the next week or so. In the heat of battle I'm a kid, again.

You know Tom, after the first match where I was basically helpless, I just made up my mind to forget everything and play the best I could from then on. I got really focused after that and played some good pool on some good players. Believe me they didn't want to lose, and neither did I.

Taking advantage of their youth and inexperience Jay?

I've spent the last 25 years producing and directing tournaments, rarely playing. It's fun and challenging to try to play again after all these years.

Mad

I know, you just want to scream but you can't.
Until you get into you car where nobody can hear you.
I hate the "agony of defeat" feeling.

I understand. For other older guys who can play I think it is an advantage at times because the youngsters tend to underestimate an older guy. When they realize the older guy has a solid game it can throw them off their game a little.

I remember beating a young guy a while back and after the match he said "I never thought I would lose to YOU. I just told him I got lucky and smiled.

Two old 'dogs'

Not to take the wind out of Jay's thread BUT I ned to let him know the Mark Griffin also got 33-48.

Also like Jay, I played real weak on the TAR tv table.

In fact I really struggled the whole event.

So --- maybe we got a 'mini' TAR match coming up someday in the future - not too far in the future - we are to old!!!!

Now Jy, don't go and get all wound up - this is not a challenge. But I felt pretty good actualy getting my money back.

(By the way, my wife (Sunny) got 5-6 in women's 9-ball and 4th in the 8-ball). Now that might be tough for me to match!!

All in all, that was the toughest bar table event that has been around for awhile. There were champions everywhere!!!

Mark Griffin

P.S. Most everybody knows that Jays plays a good game but a lot of people don't know that you play a real good game yourself.

Wow a mini tar match sounds good. Maybe we can make it a mini three man old timer ring game.

Most here know that Jay plays a good game but many here don't know that you also play a very good game.

In OC? Look me up...

...

So were you working the tourney too? If so, you da man, Jay!

Nice job on the one-loss side!

If you're ever in South OC, look me up and maybe I can give you some decent practice.
I'll PM you my info.

Hope to see you at the next SoCal event. :)

Best Regards,
Abe - i4pool

now everybody knows

Jees ,Jay. Congrats but with your renewed skill and confidence why didn't you take down some action to pay your way to the Phillipines before you advertised your speed. Word would have gotten around anyhow. I'm sure there some guns out there that would have liked to take a shot at Jay Helfert:grin-devilish:
