Whatever the agenda of the beat down...I remember the first day I beat my mentor in a race to 9 9ball. We had been playing for about 2 years at this point and I had gotten close, but to win seemed like a monumental challenge.
I went from racking and winning "0" games per set....to winning a couple here and there....to actually mounting a legitimate challenge. For the record...my teacher was a WORLD class player that vowed to NEVER ease up no matter the circumstances.......on the other hand I never accepted weight and lost with as much grace and poise as possible.
During this time I would venture out to the weekly tourneys to get myself seasoned. I was starting to win enough $$$ to cover my loses to Andy....the actual change over from being the red headed step child to legitimate sparing partner was gradual, yet over night.
The day I reached the peak was like every other at the pool room....except, I was in no mood to play. The tables needed cleaning....I had more then a few tips, wraps, and cues to repair, and who knows what to clean! BUT....I played anyway.
I guess the biggest difference was the fear was gone.....I had been beaten down long enough to not be afraid. I was not scared of a 5 pack anymore. I just got my job done and racked , or broke the balls as the game required....after a while....I went to break and everyone was staring.....I was like...WHAT?...I won the set.....
nice time to be alive.........also a very weird time because I expected it to be some monumental occasion to beat THE MAN.......not really....just the next step in the path to becoming a "PLAYER"
