I recently played against someone who i know is far better then me and I beat him every game of 9 ball we played except one.We weren't playing safeties or push outs.At the end of the match he said i don't know why but I can't beat you.Nice to hear but I feel i wasn't getting his A game.

You should post his name. I mean, imagine how you'd feel if you got your butt handed to you by an inferior player, he posted the results on azb and he forgot to include your name.

Maybe now you are the better player....SPF=randyg

Don't take offense at this Bob, but if he new he was the better player he may have been doggin' it a bit. Throw a C-note out on the table and see if he improves any.

styles make fights and sometimes people are intimidated by others. lots of things can effect a match.

Beating someone over the course of a night means nothing. Do it over a number of weeks and months then you can start feeling your oats. He may have been off.

Whatever the agenda of the beat down...I remember the first day I beat my mentor in a race to 9 9ball. We had been playing for about 2 years at this point and I had gotten close, but to win seemed like a monumental challenge.

I went from racking and winning "0" games per set....to winning a couple here and there....to actually mounting a legitimate challenge. For the record...my teacher was a WORLD class player that vowed to NEVER ease up no matter the circumstances.......on the other hand I never accepted weight and lost with as much grace and poise as possible.

During this time I would venture out to the weekly tourneys to get myself seasoned. I was starting to win enough $$$ to cover my loses to Andy....the actual change over from being the red headed step child to legitimate sparing partner was gradual, yet over night.

The day I reached the peak was like every other at the pool room....except, I was in no mood to play. The tables needed cleaning....I had more then a few tips, wraps, and cues to repair, and who knows what to clean! BUT....I played anyway.

I guess the biggest difference was the fear was gone.....I had been beaten down long enough to not be afraid. I was not scared of a 5 pack anymore. I just got my job done and racked , or broke the balls as the game required....after a while....I went to break and everyone was staring.....I was like...WHAT?...I won the set.....

nice time to be alive.........also a very weird time because I expected it to be some monumental occasion to beat THE MAN.......not really....just the next step in the path to becoming a "PLAYER"

I don't play much 9 ball and when I do I don't often push out but I am curious on why no safeties, for myself that is where the fun is. Maybe if I ran out more I would not need to play safe:embarrassed2:.

If you are truely playing a better player in the long run you will never beat a better player.A big part of pool is mental .If he has a little better skills then you dosnt mean he is better.

Beatin a better player!

Yeah throw a C-Note on the table, like was mentioned, and his true face may be revealed!

But seriously, play push-out and safties, thats one way to find out where your true game is, if you truely know you can't make the shot at hand, Put-Um in Jail!

Making good (great) safties can throw a better player out of rhythm for sure, and may lead to your VICTORY!:)

Good for you it is always nice, it is a stepping stone. However, there could have been many reasons for the result.
Beating balls around it is sometimes hard to find motivation, or he could have been just off, or he was setting a trap.
You will not know until you play him in a money match and I would be very careful if I was you.

Enjoy the win, it is always good to play someone that shoots better than you. If he asks you to shoot again, he thinks you are good for his game too.

I always try to play someone that is a little better than I think I am. I learn more and get better, and Robin is right if the other player asks you to play again you know you got their attention. Playing someone that can just own you though is not good for your game or your confidence.

Not to kickstart the very very old "9 ball is a lucky game" argument but...

At low levels, 9 ball is basically a coin flip. If you average 4 or 5 balls, then maybe you break and run a few and he cleans up... maybe you break and run nothing, he runs a few and you clean up... maybe once a night he breaks and runs out.

Over a pretty long haul, the better player should win more games but if you're not at the level where you can run racks over and over... and you're playing winner breaks... it's really a crapshoot. Could be you shot above your ability but there's a fair chance the coin just came up heads for you 5 times in a row. It happens.

LOL..just what I was thinking, enjoy your win but keep in mind that in real 9-ball your gonna play safe sometimes, sounds like he wasn't truly focused.Like the hustlers here tell me all the time..."You can win all day if we're playing for free, that's called practice".

In leagues on Thurs nights we play by handiucap so someone who's handicap is 9 is better than someone who is a 6 or a 7. I love beating a player who is better than me. All I do is play alot of safes and it gets them really mad. If they complain I just simply say" Hey, no reason to be mad, its part of the game."

Yeah..lol,and they do get mad don't they.Like your supposed to by stupid and keep giving them easy shots to stroke their ego's,that's my motivation to get better and better and I "OFTEN" think of this as I am doing my drills.Hey great post.

thats why im not a big 9 ball fan....weak players win all the time.

i hate 9ball tourney specially if its handicapped....(might as well just burn my money)
or short race

Thanks NineballBen, I love playing people better than me cuz that's the way to only get better. In 9 ball you have to players.

1. Those players who work on their leaves, play safes when necessary.

2. Then you have those players who slop balls in hoping something goes in.
Thats the reason I don't like 9ball; unless I'm practicing by myself to leave myself for my next shots.
