There comes a time when a man (or woman) must step back and take a long hard look at themselves and stop lying to themselves. I have done that, and realize I will never be a top player, or even a well known good player, and I am perfectly happy with that. Now the story, lol. I went to a bar to shoot pool with a good friend tonight. I was playing 8 ball with bar rules against a very drunk girl, so I was less than focused. I dont care about beating a drunk that cant hardly stand, and at that point I was ready to break my cue down and call it a night at the table. Well she stumbled out the door and never came back, so I kept on playing. I was just banging around with the casual players, and I kept on winning. It was cool. I was playing good, but thats not why I won, they just sucked, lol. So I held the table for about 3 hours, and it was funny how the same people kept coming back trying to beat me, even though they couldnt run 3 balls in a row, lol. So even though Im not a top player, I was the top player at that bar tonight, lol. I know its meaningless, and I really didnt get much joy out of beating them, knowing that they were half drunk and terrible pool players, but a small part of me felt good about it in a goofy sort of way. Just thought Id share my night with you all.

The other side of that coin is that you will never be the worst player, or even a well known bad player. Keep trying to improve your game, and satisfaction will overcome frustration. I'm glad you had a night where you got to whomp all comers.

I did that when I was 14, except it wasen't a bar it was a after school rec. center for military kids. I just started shooting and thinking I was gettin good. Walked in when they opened at 5pm and left at 9pm. Played for 5 hours without getting beat. I was hooked on pool after that. 34 years later I still remember that night, forgotten alot of nights since then though.

Congratulations on a winning evening!!

Hey Joe,

What you and others fail to realize some times is that you are probably better than 75 to 80% of the people out there that ever picked up a cue. It's situations like this that should only reinforce that belief.

Enjoy the ride when you get on it.

C'mon Joe you know it was that TS sneaky that took your game up a couple of notches ::wink::

Actually I was playing with a new Joss sneaky I just picked up, lol. There is no way in hell im taking either of my TS cues into a bar, lol.

I know the feeling you mean. You get to be the big fish in that small pond. People are like "oh that's so-and-so, keep away from him, he never loses." and it feels good. You might know there are 50 guys better than you in the state (or just in the county) but the people watching don't know that :)

My own story is... my buddy came back from the desert for a short leave and we played against a couple of girls. The girls wanted to make the teams fair and play true scotch doubles, but I really wanted to team up with my buddy. So I pitched the idea that he and I would play on the same team, but eyes closed.

One of these girls is someone I've played with on many occasions. It was really fun to hear her say to her buddy "no no no don't take them up on it. Eyes closed is no problem for them. You don't understand!"

...sure enough we ran 4 at one point and the rack was done in 3 innings. I just got a real kick out of that.. "you don't understand!"

Winning is a good thing..

When I first moved to Panama City I was on the base (Tyndall AFB) shooting at the NCO club. Well they had a little tourney that I did not enter.

After it was over I done what any other person would do and put my quarters up. Well I held the table for almost 5 hours before quitting. Back then I was 10 times better than I am now. (played a lot more)

Banks, Kicks, extreme cuts. You name it I didn't miss it. Or so it seemed. LOL

One of the guys there shooting asked why I didn't get in the tourney you would have won. My answer was I didn't have the money. :frown:

He said Well you should have said something I would have paid your entry. Even though I never would have asked because I had just met the guy a hour before the tourney.

It still felt great to leave everyone wondering who the hell is this guy. (I was 19 or 20 at the time)

It is really nice to think you have skills..we all have pride an a ego..please don't belittle me because your so much better then me...this is not dericted at anyone, just a figure of speach. I agree with the original poster..I to will never achive greatness..but in a few eyes i'am..and they make me chuckle...then I stop an think..an say thank you..but any way what I was going to say was..the other day my brother an I walked in to Jakes to practice..Dennis an Jim were just finnishing up...an ask me if we would like to shot some scotch doubles...I start to say no..an Dennis waves his hand an say for free..okay I say..needless to say we got or butts handed to us until I couldn't take it anymore..Well I could have,I just couldn't take watching my brother get worked up missing shots..then Dennis an Jim would run out..I had informed my brother before we started,we'd only get one shot..maybe two if they were being nice..all in all..we all had fun..

Nice post! Im not even in the top 50 in my state, I am only considered C+ so i am by no means a big dog around here, lol. I like the "you dont understand" comment, lol. Its gotta make your ego flex a little, lol. Im glad everyone has posted their thoughts because I kind of felt like an idiot feeling good about beating lesser players.
