A thread re-circulated these past several days that was contentious, highly argumentative, and in my opinion not in the best interest of AZBilliards, or it's membership. It violated many of the tenants regarding respect and civility, as set forth by the administrators, and served no other purpose than to stir the passions of the participating members (myself included) in a negative way.
Because of this, and other situations like it, I feel that if reputation points (greenies) are awarded to a poster of a thread by members who feel that said post is positive, then by the same token points should be allowed to be given to posters who have presented threads that are deemed negative by the members. If negative reps were displayed along with positive reps it could, in some cases, cause a person to reconsider a poorly thought out thread before it is submitted. Thank you for you kind attention.

Rep is for fun. It has no official purpose. It's main unofficial purpose is to hilight worthless posters with red rep, but even that isn't 100% accurate (cuetechasaurus had a -1000000 rep campaign a while back).

It also hilights new posters.

If it's going to do anything, it's going to go away. IMO it's just an extra layer of administration that causes headaches, annoyance, and offense.

Well there is nothing like a good rep war to bury you in the rep page placement.
I have noticed that the same people that exhibit both arrogant and obnoxious qualities also tend to take offense to neg rep as well.
Then again there are those that live for it.

Overall rep doesn't really mean much. However its always an eyebrow raiser when you observe a string red instead of green in the upper right hand corner.

I've never issued negative rep but I have received it twice. In both cases I was glad I got the negative rep because it identified the individuals who did it as being a little nuts.

I would never use it but it does serve a purpose.

neg rep

I'm sorry, Tramp. I was drunk, constipated, my dog died, I hadn't slept in days and my wife came back. Please forgive me.

Come on ,Tramp, who was it?

Rep

Forgot if it was here or another forum with rep where I read it but rep was supposed to be for posts that you thought were truly exceptional. Exceptionally good posts get good rep, exceptionally bad posts get red, usually exceptionally offensive posts got red.

Soon almost all of the folks that got into the rep race will be maxed out, the counter quit working at a little over two-billion!! I think that it is a good thing as the folks that maxed out seem to have went back to using rep for what I used it for to begin with. A quick atta-boy, not good for anything but nice to get or a way to send a very short quick note to someone. (not saying the last is proper usage just that it's what I did and still do sometimes.) :D

Funny thing, 94.377% of the people that don't care about rep scream like a wounded virgin when they get red rep!

Tramp, I guess what you're saying is we should be able to see the red reps as well as the green reps? Or were you unaware they have red reps and thought we should implement a negative rep system (which does exist and get used)?

I like the existing idea of unusually good posts = green bar grows and unusually bad posts = green bar shrinks (and eventually goes backwards to become a red bar). You have to take into account the good with the bad and this visual method works great.

The problem is simply one of scale. The bars hit full almost instantly and everything above and beyond that is unknown at a glance. You can check the members list and sort by rep and find out where someone is, but really who cares enough to do that work?

They should scale the whole system so that only the top guy or top 10 or top 100 guys have full green, and everything else is relative to that. As it is now the rep system is meaningless... everyone is 100% green except guys who are 10 minutes from being banned and people who have been here less than a week.

I like it for the little messages you can get, that's about it. It might be interesting to see who has had the most posts flagged for reporting to the mod though :P

No one knows what rep anyone has because we can't see the comments and the rep has absolutely no value whatsoever. You don't get anything for having good rep and you don't suffer anything for having bad rep.

Rep is a way to let someone know privately you agree or disagree with someones post without sending a PM, that's it. No more, no less.

I have never understood people actually getting offended because of a negative rep remark. It is simply someone disagreeing with you in private for cripes sake.

I've left negative rep and I've received it. As long as the rep program is still a function I'll continue to utilize it for both positive & negative comments.

Folks, its only comments and it has no bearing on your real life or your forum life. Don't take it so seriously.

Rep points and even the comments have little to do with real reputation. A quick look at the members list sorted by reputation will leave the people that have never done it amazed at some of the long term great posters that are well down on the rep list. Real reputation is something to be treasured. Rep points are nice for the accompanying comments or purely a game. Anyone that confuses rep points with real reputation is likely to be in for a very rude awakening!(but they could at least give me a gold star for my 2.147 billion points!)

Thanks for participating everyone, and just so you'll know, this was by no means a vendetta on my part. I was only curious as to the possibilities. I have seen negative reps displayed at other forums but whether it actually helps to identify potential, or chronic troublemakers, may be dubious at best. In addition, making the necessary changes to make it happen might not be worth the time, trouble, or expense.

REP is over, its useless now.

We need to put everyone's score back to 0 and race to 2.147 billion it takes a couple years for the set to finish, it would be cool to start over.

put Smorg up #1 with 2.147B and the rest of us at 0 and we can playthe rep game again, i miss it.

You mean I have to start over? :D

I like repping people on good/funny comments. The only reason I would find rep points valid are for the wanted/for sale section to see where someone might have been scammed so people are aware.

I've never given a red rep, and it's been about 2 months since the last positive rep I gave. It's all quite silly, but theoretically the red rep would be useful if it showed up under their signature. It would highlight troublesome posters from those who may just have a controversial opinion.

It would be kind of cool if it indicated what context the person has recieved reputation. Perhaps if the rep is under the "ask the instructor" category for example all new posters would know that said person should be carefully listened to. It would distinguish the pool gurus from the NPR debaters, the for sale dudes from the pool historians and Pool News cats from the table mechanics.

Just thinkin out loud

The thing is, just over a long time you may grab a red or two unless you're extra extra careful not to step on any toes. I've had a few and naturally I think they're all bullshìt :P ...I wouldn't like the fact that I have, say, 7 red reps to some other guy's 1 red rep influence people's take on my post. I sure don't expect them to automatically like the post cuz of my green bar (since everyone else on here has the same green bar).

It'd be fun to see a different rep-based system.

Maybe an alternate system would be something like point violations for speeding. You start with 2 or 3 strikes... several red reps cost a strike. When your strikes are gone, you're banned (without the admin even needing to jump in). But every 100 or 1000 reps get you an extra strike, basically a free pass on a violation. Maybe some other bonuses could be given if you accumulate enough strikes... 1 extra strike = custom sig, 2 extra strikes = allowed to use avatar, 3 extra strikes = custom title, and so on.

The greenies are suffering from inflation like our script dollars. I saw a new poster that had all 11 greenies with only his 2nd post...WTF? Why don't they add 7 more lighter greenies?

I like your idea of starting over.
Have a big one:

I'm not a fan of negative rep. Sure, I can play it safe and kiss everyone's a^s with compliments and get nothing but green, but sometimes things need to be said!!
On one hand, I think the rep system is cool, because it's unique and not like most other forums. I do appreciate when someone gives me a green. I'll say thank you in a message, or return the favor when I get the chance. I don't see the point in giving anyone red rep.
The problem is most people on here don't know each other, so it's very easy to take something the wrong way (especially over the internet)..
Well, I think people should be able to speak their minds on here, and not have to feel like they have to hold back their true feelings afraid of getting a red! Or feel like they have to kiss a^s to the "veterans". As long as there's no personal attacks or vulgar language directed at another member, I don't see the use in red repping someone to death. Y so srs?
