Thanks Lenny. I hope so. Back in the old days things weren't that much different. Some guys were "lock artists" who wouldn't bet a dime unless they thought they had the dead nuts. And other guys were at the poolroom bright and early every day, ready to play. In some rooms, guys would position themselves close to the door, so they could be the first to ask a guy to play, as soon as he walked in.

I can remember walking into poolrooms in New York and being besieged with offers to play, the moment I set foot in the door. These vultures saw my cue and knew I was a live one.

Big games between top players did happen, but it always took some time to get the match-up right. Usually a matter of an hour or more, not days like we see on here. When two guys wanted to play they found a common ground fairly quickly. Of course most of the time, they had "backer" in hand! ;)

My friend Gil Black said he played at the 7-11 and when he would walk in there any guy sitting on the bench could run 100 balls so you had to play real good to win some money in rooms like that. BTW, what kind of cue were you playing with back then?

Win money in the 7/11? Ha Ha! NO ONE won money in there! I think Lassiter was the only man to ever get out of there with the money.

The regular every day line-up included Jersey Red, New York Blackie, Richie From The Bronx, Johnny Ervolino, Boston Shorty, Johnny Irish and New York Rex. Road players need not apply. You had zero chance in there, I don't care who you were or how you played. Lassiter escaped and never came back. Even he knew he couldn't fade that whole crew day after day. There were much better spots for him and Willis.

I always think about some of these rooms and wish I could have been there to just be a sponge and absorb it all. I am in a great room now for someone like me who is still green and hungry to improve, good players to watch and lots of action to sweat everyday and night. I know there were a good deal of action rooms back then that you would know of, but I am curious as to what the top 10 rooms are today for action and to sweat some good play, what were the top 10 in your opinion from years gone by? For a student of the game being around it is huge for improving and learning things, mouth shut and eyes open.

I don't know the top ten rooms today. In the old days it was 7/11 and Guys & Dolls in New York, Hi-Cue in Jersey, The Golden Q in Queens, Boulevard Billiards in Philly, Jack 'n Jills in the D.C. area, Congress Bowl in Miami, The Sports Palace in New Orleans, The Cotton Bowl in Dallas, The Palace and Cochrans in San Francisco, Tropicana Bowl in Los Angeles, Bensingers in Chicago, and the grand daddy of them all, THE RACK in Detroit. No place before or after even begins to approach The Rack for high dollar action. There were other rooms all over the country, back in the 60's and the 70's, where you could get games.

In those days EVERY decent room had at least a few players who would gamble. How times have changed. I would venture a guess that we had three to four times as many rooms back then. And all with full size pool tables. You had to go to a bar to find a bar table. Even a shortstop player like me had no trouble finding games everywhere I went. Seemed like most of the time, I could grind out a pay day too. :wink:

Back in those days if you won forty or fifty bucks you had a good day. I had a lot of good days!

I think there was more ation in poolrooms in NY in the 60's to 1980 than any other time in pool history. You never knew who whould walk in to Guys & Dolls at any time. There were some really big games in Guys & Dolls in the 1960's to early 1970's. A lot of mob money were in those games also. If you were going to dump in there you better have known who you were dumping...they didn't play that $hit. Johnnyt

Like I said in my earlier post... I am willing to give up any of my singles tournament days to play OMG. I have obligations to other people in my other tournaments that they have paid entry fees for.

I want to make this happen.

Even though Ms. Andoni got a cover on IP, I would venture a guess that Ms. Huang is known by more people in the pool world than Ms. Andoni. Melinda used to have a google gadget on her website that had push pins on a map of the people that read her blog. I don't think there is a country in the world that doesn't have someone that knows who she is (this includes the east coast in the US).

It is my opinion that this particular blog post catapulted her to "stardom". http://massiveunderstatement.com/?p=38

Over the years she has evolved away from commentary of others and now posts her trials & tribulations on the tournament trail & life in general. She is very good at telling her stories in a witty manner that keeps people reading week after week. You might not know who she is but I assure you she is known by many, world wide.

I can't tell you how many times I've shaken my head at some of the more inane stuff you say on here but I think this instance takes the cake. You speak way too boisterously for someone who knows so little.

Tourney play has always been & always will be a scapegoat for not gambling. Common story in this game. Some players step up to reach higher levels, some find reasons not to. If I thought I was a favorite in a $2G match, i'd totally dis the tourney & my team would understand AND encourage it. They have subs to fill in for me just in case such an instance occurs. Just sayin. Some players step up, some find reasons not to. I'm not saying either girl is or isn't doing that, but it's beginning to look like as such.

just because you're betting 2k doesn't really mean you're stepping to the next level. it just means you're betting higher
