Why does it seem that I play better w a House Cue than my 2 own personal cue?

I own 2 Cues one a Fury Dl an a Joss(lower model) but my accuracy is better with a House Cue. This is assuming house cue has a decent tip and is straight. Has anyone else experience this phenomenon? The fury i have owned for just under 2 years and Joss about 6 months. I at first thought it was in my head but it seems my accuracy goes up by about 15% or so? Any ideas?

You must be predisposed to a 13 mm shaft and a solid hit that a one piece cue gives.

Although we are addicted to fancy cues with a hinge in the middle a straight house cue with a decent tip and ferrule will outplay about 95% of the hinged cues. It is a major accomplishment to make a two piece cue hit as well as a house cue and can't be done if the customer wants some commonly desired features. My opinion of course.

I have my own twisted theory about this. LOL .... With an unfamiliar cue, your attention (conscious thoughts) are occupied by the specifics of playing with that cue and don't get as much opportunity to try to figure out how to miss. :)

I once had to spend about 4 months without my trustworthy player because of some modifications I had it sent away for. During this time, I was forced to play with my Gilbert 3-piece, which I might add is a great player. However, it was lighter and played very differently from my daily player, so one would assume I should have lost some speed. I found that with the new and unfamiliar cue, I was playing more conservatively when it comes to juicing the CB, settling with good position rather than perfect position, and depending more on shot making skills than my ability to move the CB around, and my level skyrocketed. When I got my cue back, I remembered what I had learned in keeping things simple. I was one of those guys that forgot what it's all about once I learned how to make the CB dance. A nice ability to have, but an ability that can easily be abused at the price of actually hurting your game.

He has got it.

You're probably drinking more when you're using a house cue. That's why you play better with it. :D

Seriously though, I'd try to avoid mixing serious play with dramatically different cues. You're just going to mess with your own head. Stick with one cue and play. One cue is not always better than another, just different.

Good luck! :D

with a house cue you just play your game.when you use your cue you have to just look good.

Discovering new preferences, and reminders of the fundamentals

Maybe your grip hand prefers a wrapless cue and you never realized it!!!

Maniac

I think Maniac hit on something here. (Good job, M!) I personally discovered my preference for wrapless cues by noticing this "feel more confident shooting with a house cue than my Irish Linen-wrapped two-piece" long ago.

The other thing I noticed is that with a foreign cue in my hands, I tend to pay attention more to my fundamentals *because* of the foreign feeling in my hands, than I do with a cue that feels familiar in my hands. It was an indirect thing -- I thought to myself, "why is it that I seem to not miss" when using a foreign cue, than when I'm COMFORTABLE shooting with my trusty old familiar cue? After some soul-searching and some analysis at the table, I found that I was "unconsciously" paying more attention to my fundamentals (if that makes sense to "unconsciously" "pay attention") with the foreign cue, precisely *because* it felt foreign. I'd gotten lazy because of the comfortable feeling with a familiar cue.

Then, I took my trusty cue that I'm comfortable with, and made a conscious effort to pay attention to my fundamentals -- stance, hips, knee joints, where the feet were placed, bridge hand, grip, alignment to the shot, etc. And voila! EUREKA! That "seemingly couldn't miss" feeling was back.

Sometimes it takes an outside influence (e.g. a foreign cue) to remind you of the basics / fundamentals.

And yes, let's not forget the importance of what Maniac hit on above as well -- sometimes you discover a preference for something by trying something new. Today, I still prefer wrapless cues, and I enjoy the art / craftsmanship that a cuemaker shows off in a wrapless cue, because he/she can no longer "hide an ugly / so-so-looking piece of wood" under a wrap.

Hope this is helpful,
-Sean

1. Really in your head after all (maybe 15% difference happens 1 day to the next)
2. Playing cue has subtle defect, funky tip, slight warp
3. You hit all balls a little more carefully (and with less english) using a house cue because you're scared of miscuing with that beaten shiny tip.
4. Unusually high quality house cues at your local hall?
5. At the point you decide to switch to the other cue, you're sick of missing balls and have convinced yourself it's the cue, and you get a placebo effect going by switching. See #1.

because its a one piece cue,and there is no interuption in the harmonics of the vibration of it and the 2 nodal points are in their correvt place, when you introduce metal into wood at the A joint of at themiddle joint it messes up the true harmonics of the cue. in snooker 3/4 cues playbetter than 50/50 jointed cues, many pro snooker players play with one piece cues. I knew one top pool player who used a one piece cue with a 18" length of PVC pipe iver the shaft to protect it from dings in his car.

When a cue comes incontact with a CB it creates a sin wave with 2 nodial points the less interference with themthe better the cue plays as a rule all other things being even,

school's out,

Just get someone to convert the cue to a 2 piece and play with it. Make some cosmetic changes if you want and convert it to a two piece to put in your case and try that. Should cost a whole lot and you still play with a house cue. Just a thought...

Some great responses an Theories here...lol....An ol timer told me I should allow my shaft to get "dirty"....he says a creates a little bit more friction an i be less prone to wobbling..???

It does seem like the house cue has a slightly harder "hit". My fury has a solid hit. I considered having a house cue converted before or maybe possibly trying one out...
