Red Cloth @ Hollywood Billiards !!!

Jeff just turned the most beautiful pool room in the country into the Rec Room at the Student Union. Right before a big tournament! I'm hearing a lot of other strange things happening there lately. The loyal costumers have been slowly leaving for other rooms. Too bad really, such a great hang not too long ago.

I agree Monte, but you have to look at it from an economic standpoint. Jeff will make WAY more money from the banger, nightclub, hip hop crowd than he will from real pool players.

Smart move on his part no matter how much we all hate the color. Jeff is a smart guy and I seriously doubt he just woke up one morning and decided to do this.

I made the mistake and put ROYAL BLUE Simonis on my GCI.

IT SUCKS!!!!!!

Even with a Diamond light, it is too dark at the far end of the table. I have purchased Tournament Blue and will have it installed soon.

Wait until i get the new cloth on!! It will be even better. You already know u have an open invitation.

Unfortunately I can't play right now. My back pulled a "fatboy" and I can hardly walk..... :(

Sounds like the new owners want to chase the pool players out. That's what you do when you put red cloth on. Johnnyt

Johnny

Its a weird deal. The guys now operating this huge beautiful pool room don't play. The owner sorta hates pool players, that's where his head is at after years of owning pool rooms. He closed Cochrans in San Fran and it looks like he'll close HB. Its kind of a shame and seems to me that if you don't want a business that caters to pool players why have a pool hall? But what do I know, I'm, as Jeff Bey has explained to me over and over, am just a pool player.

Ha Ha - that's me last night on the table to the right in the black shirt - with my arm cocked holding the cue with my head near the light.

Basically, new hired management has taken over and they're not pool players. The cushions all need to be replaced, and what do they do? Put on burgundy friggin' cloth.

The worst part is the burgundy Silver Cup chalk. I miscued three times on routine shots.

All the place is missing now is the male strippers.

At the Swanee in February I noticed that the cloth on many of the tables was not in good condition. I distinctly remember Jay working on a few of them practically having to sew holes closed on some of the cloth. I had wondered why such a highly regarded place would fall behind in the cloth department but now I know - this was in the works.

Maybe the place wasn't doing well. Were pool players supporting it? A friend of mine was there last Friday night with his girlfriend around 8:30 - 9 and said they practically had the place to themselves. Huh?

While I liked HB, I considered it a good, but not great, pool hall. Reasons being they do not open until 5PM, the table lighting is not very good, they don't use premium ball sets (I don't think) and the balls are not kept that clean. No snooker and no 3C. And not much action. The tables themselves are excellent (when they have good cloth on them), the rail is very good and they have good food.

Now, the OLD Hollywood Billiards was a great pool hall. In the basement of an office building it reminded me of the legendary Bensinger's in Chicago (in it's later location) in that regard. Open all night on the weekends, excellent equipment, lots of action, snooker and carom tables. The place just had a certain feel to it. We used to close HOB in Sherman Oaks on Friday and Saturday nights and head out to HB to play until 8-9AM.

Those were the days - young, dumb, and full of ....

Jeff ran the players out of the place. I was too stubborn to leave just because the owner was an idiot and treated me bad so he upped the ante and went to cloth I couldn't play on. Yep its all about me.

I go there once in a while and the tables are always pretty busy, but it's a big place and they need to get some events going on.

It's laughable that they think burgundy cloth is going to do something for the place. The red chalk is nasty on the shaft. I just played for a couple of hours last night and my shaft looked like it was smeared with blood.

You can see shots and pockets fine on the cloth, but the bad thing about the cloth is really the color contrast with the balls. The cloth reflects on the balls. Green is pretty neutral and so is the tournament blue - this stuff is not neutral. The 5 looks like the 1 ball, the 3 and the 7 get lost, and the 2 and the 4 look similar.

It was a huge mistake - and they kick it off with a 10 ball event!
